  • Have a 2001 Kodiak 400 4x4, recently got stuck in the mud trying to pull someone else out and now it will inch forward a few feet and then just revs up with no movement. I've been told to check the clutch but wanted a little reassurance before I did.

  • When I go to shift into 1st gear it jerk foward then dies.I try to push it while in 1st gear with clutch lever pulled in and it doesnt move.Clutch cable is fine.So I took the clutch cover off and my plates are really sticky.Like honey between them.Is it safe to say this is what is causing my problem?

  • @weez1190 - thicker oil will make them drag more, but you should see it go away when if warms up. Try Belray gear saver 75 or 80 weight. If that doesn't help, you most likely have a worn basket and hub.

  • Okay thank you! I just got it working properly. Thank you for the quick replys

  • When i pull the lever it doesnt engage fully

  • @rmz247 - Pulling the lever disengages the clutch. So I assume the clutch is still grabbing with the lever pulled in. This is normal to some degree. It can be caused by the oil (thicker usually) or by the basket and/or hub wearing. As you get grooves in the hub or basket, the plates have a hard time fully separating; this leads to a little drag.

  • does it matter which way the friction plates or steel plates go in? i replaced the clutch on a 2010 crf250 and its not fully engaging, iv tried adjustin it with both adjusters

  • @rmz247 - No it doesn't. it is not fully engaging or do you mean disengaging? Is it slipping or grabbing?

  • do ya'll sell a owner manual for a '01 yz125 2-stroke?

  • @chahl123 - yes we do

  • hey can anyone help me i just bought a 80-something XT 250, at idle after about 20 seconds it "queafs". looks like its coming out the head gasket, not too sure, but it dont happen at high rev at all. also what replacement parts i need to fully rebuild engine?

  • Your videos are amazing! I'm even watching ones not needed for my bike. Thank you _so_ much for doing this.

  • will the cushion ring go back in a crf150r with a wesico clutch,

    please respon

  • @mxrider689 - i am not sure. You will need to check the instructions that came with it. We don't sell that kit so I am not familiar with it.

  • Just did my 1994 kx 125 today. Runs like a dream

  • G,day mate, love the video! you guys made that clutch change look like a piece of piss. If I ordered accessories or parts would you blokes freight it to Australia ? things like complete wheel sets Hinson slipper clutch slip on pipes header pipes rebuild kits riding gear boots etc, They are super expensive here eg wheels cost 1100 full exhaust 1600 aud. I'm sure the USA is cheaper even before the exchange rate comes into it. Just a query anyway, hey would love to see a vid on valve clearance an

  • @kwpowerluva - we sell a lot of product to Australia. We have great shipping prices and can have it to you in 3 days.

  • Can anyone help me? I have a 2001 yamaha warrior and I just put a new clutch in. When I shift gears then push it, it does not go into gear. It's like it stays in neutral. What did I do wrong

  • I have a brand new bike and when it was delivered the bike would go into neutral, the next day it just wouldnt go into neutral at all, its only when the bike is started it wont go into neutral i have to roll the bike forward to get it in neutral. :(

  • If the inner hub or the basket was worn and you had to replace in would you have to take the whole motor apart or just in bolt a few things and pull them out?

  • also i have a question, i noticed the tension adjuster on my clutch cable is broken, could this be causeing my bike to roll a little when gear is engaged or is it my whole clutch?

  • @youlikeguys1 - if the clutch is disengaging it is the clutch. almost all bikes do it to some degree.

  • what kind of oil did you soak the friction plates in? Thanks ahead of time.

  • @youlikeguys1 - the same oil you put in your transmission.

  • If my clutch basket has some minor groves in the fingers is it o.k. to File or sand them down gently?

  • @snowmobilinglegend - you can get away with that a couple times, yes.

  • you guys would probably know more than most on the internet, so i'll ask,

just did an engine rebuild, all stock, reinstalled the old clutch (not alot of wear)

the clutch wont disengage, when in first with clutch lever pulled in the tire wont spin, not just a "grabby" feel. bike is 2001 wr250f

  • @qwikyking - Disengage or engage? If the lever is pulled in the clutch should be disengaging the transmission and your rear wheel shouldn't spin. I must not understand what you are asking.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC it was staying engaged (as if i was never pulling the clutch lever at all) i ended up soaking the friction plates in oil, runs perfect now! thanks tho.

  • @londonTown1989 - It depends on the bike. Some right crank seals are installed from the inside (kawasaki does this a lot). Check your parts diagram. This CR - Yes you can.

  • @londonTown1989 - It depends on the bike. Some right crank seals are installed from the inside (kawasaki does this a lot). Check your parts diagram. This YZ - Yes you can (if is a very tight fitting seal though!).

  • did you just soak the friction plates or did you do the metel as well, and does it matter if u do both or not???

  • @TRITTYcat - just the friction. The steel plates don't matter - they can't really absorb oil.

  • so that cushion ring doesn't need to go back in on a tusk kit you just install the clutch without the cushin ring right? Thx sack

  • @sackofruit420 - correct. same with EBC and other aftermarket kits as well!

  • Thanks , I just can't understand why now y? It never slipped before , this is the second oil change i did on this bike , guess I will not know for sure until its opened up and looked at .but its defiantly fowling plugs , that's a given . Thanks again .

  • had my carb jetted 3 days ago, test drove it and it was fine, its a1989 kx 125,rode it for about 30 minutes that day ,the next day I degreaser the engine, washed it and did oil change, but did not start the bike ,today it started first kick, bogged out with a backfire and has not started since.also from sitting over nite, clutch lever does nothing.I can put bike in gear but when I pull lever it stays in gear.no freewheeling, could degreaser have gotten on clutch plate ?? Weather, or oil change .help

  • @graveyardpromotions - most likely the clutch issue is unrelated. It probably didn't disengage that well before when cold, you just never noticed. It sounds like you may have fouled the plug. try a new plug and see if it runs. Your jetting may still be off if you fouled a plug.

  • PROTIP:- THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE DRUM BRAKES need not necessarily remove the break pedal, instead loosen the nut of your rear wheel drum brake till it's not able to catch the wheel. but REMEMBER TO TIGHTEN IT BACK ON AS SOON AS YOU'RE DONE.

  • Just took the clutch cover off my 2004 YZ 125, all ready to put in a tusk kit. And realised i don't have a clutch holding tool. Is there anything i can use that will do the same job?

  • Hi ! my clutch on my kx 85 isnt working i pull it and nothing happens can you help !!

  • just orded mine a couple of minutes ago

  • how does the tusk clutch hold up for a trail rider that will go on a track for fun?

  • @brandon184839 - great!

  • Do you have to use new steel or aluminum plates?

  • hey i just did a full rebuild and got the parts off your site. great videos thats why chose you and i will continue to. anyways everything when great with the rebuild. but my clutch makes a grinding noise i can hear at idle. when i pull the clutch lever it stops the niose completely. and the looser my cable is the more niose comes from the clutch. the manual gave no spec on the pressure plate. so could it be that its too tight. or could it be my idler gear bearing becuase it felt kinda rough.

  • @staticxmako - It could be nothing at all. all motorcycles make more noise ideling in neutral compared to pulling the clutch in. This is becuase the clutch is driving all the gears in the transmission, so you are hearing them all move around. You usually notice this after you rebuild it and are more sensitive the sounds the bike is making. Try listening to your buddies bike and see if it does it as well.

At the same time, it doesn't hurt to make sure you got everything together right!

  • @RockyMountainATVMC yea thanks i torqued the pressure plate bolt to about 9 foot lbs and it still does it. im pretty damn sure this isnt normal its pretty rough sounding. my crf250r doesnt do it. and i think its the needle bearing on the clutch or the top hat bearings, i really hope becuase im not spliting my cases for the idler gear bearing

  • I have a 2001 kx250, the nut in the middle of my clutch basket keeps comming loose, how do I fix it? Thread locker?

  • @zip1233 - on that particular bike it should be a lock nut. If yours keeps coming loose, I would try a new one. that one is most likely wore out. Medium strength threadlocker should be fine a s well.

  • is this the same on a trx 250r?

  • @250rsrcool - pretty much, yes.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC do you have to drain coolent also?

  • @250rsrcool - Some quads (or even bikes) that don't have a clutch cover may have to drain the coolant. This is because the the entire right case cover has to be removed. On the bike in this video; No, you don't need to drain the coolant.

  • best video ive seen in a while regarding how to ...most ppl talk about how they rode all day and how the bike is dirty. I ve been commenting " LESS TALK MORE WORK" but this viedeo is perfect. thank you for the video ...just what i was looking for.

  • @knobs2486 - Thanks!

  • What oil do you use?

Normal engine oil or gear oil?

  • @KwikzClan - It depends on the machine and what the manufacture recomends. in this bike you can use motorcycle transmission oil or motorcycle motor oil.

  • thanx for the video very instructional :D

  • So i just got a new bottom end and the sprocket moves fine and shifts all through the gears, but when i install the clutch basket with the plates and pressure plate the sprocket locks up like its in gear?

is there a trick? i followed how the book told me to do but no luck?

  • @deerman1212 - there will be some drag with the gears, but you should be able to spin the sprocket and hold the clutch still when in neutral.

  • How can I adjust my free play I just turn the knobs in front of the handle bar inward right?

  • @nathanmeitzler there is also most times another adjustment on the same cable towards the bottom of the frame of the bike or atv

  • Allrighty, i have a question for ya. On my bike, the clutch cable is stretched out, so im buying a new one for that. But im wondering...sometimes when i put it in neutral and start it it can drive if i let out the clutch....then can put it in first from there, Is it the clutch basket and disks? or is it the transmission? It also will not switch from 1st to second with one click up, i have to pull up 2 times. What gives?

  • Is there any specific order to put the friction plates in?

  • @KawiKid109 - in some cases there is a thinner friction plate that goes in the back. Otherwise, if they look the same it doesn't matter.

  • hi, i have a 94 blaster and i just put a new clutch in it a couple weeks ago. i made sure that there was plenty of slack in the clutch line/handle and there has been the whole time. my clutch slips when im riding along and stab the throttle, or when i shift. the engine doesnt feel any extra load it just revs up higher. the kid i bought it from says there is some sort of adjustment nut/bolt in the center???please help. i just put in a new piston from you guys today and now i ran into this.

  • @BowHunt1229 - look at a parts diagram of your clutch. There is an adjuster to the push rod. Check it out and make sure the pressure plate is putting all the springs force on the plates.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC alright i got every thing adjusted ...turns out a couple plates were missing. the outer friction ring, which touches the pressure plate, spins with the pressure plate when the clutch is pulled in. it sticks because of the oil sticking the two together and when i let the clutch out, it doesnt get caught anywhere/on anything, even if it doesn t fit in the grooves on the basket. should this be something to worry about? i figured it would maybe wear itself in and fit.

  • hi, i have a 1991 cr250 and the clutch isnt working, i have taken it apart and worked out it is the clutch plates sticking together, there is plenty of life in the clutch rings so i dont want to replace them. i have seperated them al and put oil on them but not soaked for long and they still stick but my clutch works a little bit now when i pull my lever in. any idea how to stop them sticking? and its a helpful video

  • @mojospin - define "not working". What is going on?

  • @RockyMountainATVMC well, if i want to set off and put it into gear it stalls, so pulling the clutch lever in doesnt do anything. it now works a little after putting it in gear not running and pulling the clutch lever in and rolling it backwards and forwards, but its not working enough

  • @mojospin - The plates may be having a hard time separating because your basket and/or inner hub is wore out and has deep grroves wore into them. Or, your plates could be warped. The most common problem is a wore out basket and/or hub though.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks for the help and advice. ive fixed them as i asked a mechanic and they said to wash them in petrol, soak them in oil, and put them back in. FIXED!!!!

  • @RockyMountainATVMC @RockyMountainATVMC thanks for the help and advice. ive fixed them as i asked a mechanic and they said to wash them in petrol, soak them in oil, and put them back in. FIXED!!!!

  • hey, i have an 06 rm85 L. And i was wondering if this would look the same for that bike?

  • i have a ktm 65 and it wont move unless i rev it really high and when i do that it will move bit by bit....what do you think it is

  • @levifousha - the clutch is obviously not engaging. You need to pull it apart to see why.

  • well done, thanks for the info.

  • someone please answer.

When you're at higher gears and speeds, do you have to use clutch if youre not putting any gas.

When i remove all the gas and dont engage the clutch, it makes a weird noice.

so... Do you have to clutch when youre at a faster speed and higher gears with not putting any gas, and letting it just slide.

  • @Relaxantify - you will always be easier on your transmission if you use the clutch when shifting in any gear.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC

I meant that, if youre not gonna even change gear, and youre just gliding on the road.

If you're not using the clutch doesn't it strain the engine? Like engine braking.? I dunno.

So if youre just gliding freely with no gas, not changing gear, do you have have to have the clutch pressed?

  • @Relaxantify - I guess I don't know why you would want to use your clutch if you aren't shifting and you are just cruising at high speed.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC

if youre Just GLIDING without gas

  • this is a very very good video!

  • PS, HERE is my basket picture, maybe you can tell me if this wear can make the 1gear to be difficult to connect when the engine is running. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

  • HEY, how much wear the basket can have? in mm... my gasket have a little dents like 1mm deep inthe external disks place, i guess thats the 1rst and second gear... is that too much?

  • how often does a clutch basket wear and is it difficult to remove

  • @CoDkiller1011

You just have to check the basket when you are replacing the clutch. Most of the time the basket seems to outlast the actual disks, though I don't guess this is always the case.

  • Hey there i have a 2000 yz426f dirtbike and recently my clutch has been acting up.

sometimes the clutch works fine but then other times when starting out from a stop the clutch likes to grab and jerk and is hard not to stall the bike. is this from a bad clutch?

  • I broke the bolts in the Inner Hub... What do I do?

  • will this look the same on an 82 honda

  • my 03 drz 125 starts in nuetral fine.

after i start riding (when i go from gear to gear) it feels like my clutch lever doesn't work.

but when i stop, the clutch works fine. feeling like it has heavy drag when i ride.

and when i am riding, and pull the cl.lever, the bike nose-dives, like im not using the clutch at all.

    any help will be appreciated.

btw. great videos, and i shop from u guys all the time (im new to MX). please make a vid w/a 03 DRZ 125L if possible. (u can use mine ;) )

  • @laptopdragon - I don't know if i fully inderstand, but it sounds like the plates are having a hard time disengaging. Check to make sure your basket and inner hub aren't wore out (grooved).

  • @RockyMountainATVMC

thanks found the issue ; 2 things.

the set screw was too tight, or didn't allow the pressure plate to open up completely

---it only had <8 hours on it too, but really old oil (orig. owner never changed it). so after i changed it (TWICE now) and checked the basket, springs, reassembled and finally adjusted the set screw it was fixed.

    ---result- ressure plate set screw + new oil...and a days ride= :)

  • great vid man u make it look soooo easy lol

  • You know, SO MUCH of getting a mechanical job done right is NOT ONLY PARTS, BUT PROPER PROCEDURE. It's GREAT to see you soaking clutch discs in oil overnight - this is a VERY COMMON MISTAKE that guys make: they install them dry, quickly dump oil in, fire it up, and then wonder why they don't work right. CHEERS TO YOU GUYS FOR THE VIDEO, AND FOR PROPER PROCEDURE!!! I hope you end up very prosperous - you deserve it! :D

  • @joedrummer2010 - Thank you!

  • very straight forward and informative.......good job!

  • vid was awsome hey when i press my clutch it de adjust itsef when its running works fine when off then i turn it on and press it two three times and boom no more pressure??? HELP

  • @davison1021 - i don't understand the problem exactly. Could you give more details?

  • @RockyMountainATVMC its ok i hadnt tightned my pressure plate enough i guess

  • your video was very helpful. i order for your store and when i had a question the people were helpful. i installed my clutch and even made my own video. so check it out

  • @james300mag - it looked great! Good job

  • is Tusk a great brand in parts ??

  • @TyeDye07 - yes it is.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC ok thnx

  • On my kx 100 it does the opposite :S It has lost nuetral, and when you try to push it its like its in gear even when you pull the clutch in?? :/ Someone help me pleasee!!!!! D:

  • I'm assuming that this bike should be pretty identical to changing the clutch in my 2005 trx450r

  • @james300mag - yep, pretty close the same.

  • Nice. But I have one problem, I have a Peugeot vivacity 50cc and it had some square spots in the variator rollers and also a worn clutch. So I purchased new rollers and a new 107mm adjustable clutch. I tested it out with only the new rollers in and the back wheel spun after alot of revs so I pit the new clutch in. Now the back wheel doesn't spin atall. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • You make it look so easy!

I have two (yes two!) bike that have got worn clutches that need replacing - both in the last few months after owning both bikes for 6 - 7 years. Typical..

I don't think they are as easy as this one though :-(

  • was this a automatic clutch or a standard

  • so what does the number of how many clutch plates there are mean? nothing?

  • @digitalsickness4 - It means the quantity of plates.

  • what if i left my cushion ring in my clutch. i went from my OEM yamaha to my Tusk. do i need to take it out?

  • on a 1996 yz 125 to take off the inner cover do i have to pull the whole clutch (basket and everything)

  • @907outdoorsman - I am not certain what "inner cover" you are talking about. if you are talking about the right case cover, then no. It will come off without having to remove the clutch.

  • @907outdoorsman - yes, take it out. The plate it fits under is most likely a different size than the tusk.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC ok thanks :)

  • I buy a Tusk Kit to my KX 125 1998 I dont know if I have to put back up the metal O Ring! please help me

  • @musicatan07 - i just looked at a parts diagram for a 1998 KX125. There is no metal o-ring. stock only shows steel plates and friction plates. That is what I would go with.

  • How do i tell how much pressure i have on the bolts?

  • @gavinabcdefghi - a Torque wrench would let you know for sure. That is the only way to be exact.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Couldnt you just tighten it till it was tight and be done with it?

  • @gavinabcdefghi - define "tight". "tight" on a small bolt is a lot different than "tight" on a larger bolt. If you aren't sure, I would suggest a torque wrench.

  • maybe you can help me... so i did all of this on my raptor 350 and i cant get the clutch perfect.. its either the springs are too tight and the clutch is always engaged or you cant engage the clutch ( the springs are too loose).. i have tried this over 5 times and i cant get it right i looked online for answers and cant find any.

  • @TheDBen23 - I guess I don't understand fully. How are you adjusting the springs? Really, your only adjustment on your pressure plate coming down on the plates is in the cable. Make sure you have a few milimeters of play in the cable.

  • @TheDBen23 Use a torque wrench on the bolts that hold the pressure plate on. And adjust your cable correctly.

  • Hey if my bike idles good then I give it a rev and when it tries to idle down it dies. What's wrong and it's ridable and needs a clutch. This Is while in neutral and it's a ktm 125. Can the clutch make a knocking noise? Thanks and great vid. Do the steel plates usually get worn?

  • @worldskater31 when you pull your clutch leaver in is that when you here the knocking noise? Aslo does it over rev alot? If so its definatley your clutch :(

And if its dieing when you rev it, try giving your carb a good clean out, chances are its probably blocked :/

  • maybe someone can help me. I wasa attempting to remove the inner hub and I broke it. is there some kind of tool that i need to keep that from spinning while i loosen the nut? Also, is the nut reverse threaded? Thanks.

  • @1madelectrician - The nut is generally a normal right hand thread, but check your manual. Yes there is a tool to hold the inner hub. We have it on our website for $15.99. part # 1188510001

  • This was very informative, thank you!

  • the metal plates have one side round edge and one side sharp/square edge. which side faces out.

  • the metal clutch plates have rounded edge on one side and a sharp edge on the other. which way do they go back on. sharp side out or round side.

  • What does it mean when your clutch slips? and How do you drain the oil in the clutch thing?

  • @fourwheelerdude88 - slipping means the clutch isn't fully engaged. This means the crank is not transfering all of its rotations to the transmission. I don't know what "clutch thing" you are trying to drain oil on. Are you talking about draing the transmission oil? Just pull the drain plug.

  • What does it mean when your clutch slips?

  • Does it differ much if you have hydraulic clutch? (AJP)

  • What does the clutch acctully do? Does it allow you to shift gears and everything?

If my gears on my bike doesnt work, will a clutch replacement fix it?

    Ty ;)

  • @Hockeyvalley - the clutch simply delivers the power from the spinning crank to the transmission. It is made to engage and disengage to make power delivery smoother and shifting easier. If you have problems with your transmission, it is most likely not the clutch.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC hi i was looking at a 07 kx250f and the gear seems to shift a little hard, what's the issue with that? This guy hasn't do any vale adjustment or checked the vales. he's got quite a bit of hours on the bike and also the brakes are mushy. you think it's a good idea to buy or not?

  • @RockyMountainATVMC should the bike be on neutral?

  • @ilikesuzuki - it doesn't matter either way.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC when are you going to do a vale check and adjustment video. keep up the good work luv your vids.

  • i have a ? i just got new clutch springs but for no reason,i just wanted to replace them.when i took out the plates i see they are all in good condition but some of the steel plates have just a little tiny bit of blue and its not all of them, its just like 1 or 2 of them that have it on them and its just a line of blue, the whole plate is NOT blue! when i ride it rides strong,no slipping or loss of power at all.should i still replace them?thanks!

  • is this posting?

  • boner

  • hi i have a 2003 cr250r and i just put a new clutch cable on and it doesnt wanna adjust right. any tips?

  • hi i have a 2003 cr250r and i just got a new clutch cable, and i cant seem to adjust ir tight, any tips?

  • hi i have an 03 cr250r and i just put a new clutch cable on and i cant seem to adjust it right. any tips?

  • whats the recommended synthetic oil to be used for a yfz 450. do they have transmission oil as well?

  • kx125 new clutch plates but you can ride the bike with the clutch in

  • great video, thanks

  • Hello Rockymoutian i got a quiestion... my bike seems fine when for the first hour or so.. but when it get's hot is always like im a to high of a gear... example when im going up hils in 3 gear it feels like my bike is in 5 gear and the bike turns off ...

u know what the problem is ?

    Thanks

  • how do you know when the clutch is going? what are some of the best sighns

  • @jdirtbiker1 - it will slip.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC then whats the best way to tell someone once told me to rev the bike aply both brakes hard and drop the clutch or is there a better way

  • @jdirtbiker1, set your back tires up off the ground, put it in neutral, and if your tires still spin then your clutch is slipping so you need to replace it.

  • @07HONDA400EX07 - that isn't correct actually. The wheel will most likely turn when off the ground and in neutral. The clutch isn't doing anything here actually. The drag on the gears is causing the wheels to move. this is normal.

  • Hey do you really have to change the oil or can you just lean the bike on it side and change the plats? Thanx

  • @38HondaRacer - yes you could do that, but if your clutch is bad enough you are replacing it, chances are good the oil is filthy from the slipping clutch.

  • What kind of oil did you put on the clutch plates?

  • @DjViceeeee - the same oil you run in the bike.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Thought so :P

  • How do you check how much torque it has? is every turn 1 torque or something?

  • @DjViceeeee - Not really. you need a "torque wrench" to measure the force applied to the bolt. Any auto store will carry them.

  • sup eric just geting ready to work on a 1984 honda dt threewheeler, thanks to your video i feel good doing the job!

  • i have a 2005 yz250 and just had the clutch basket replaced. when putting the bike back together i put on the outer thrust plate between the clutch basket and clutch boss. I noticed that there was a gap between the basket and grooving that the thrust plate seems that it is supposed to sit on. Is there supposed to be that gap?

  • @zachi151x - I am sorry, but I am not understanding where this gap is.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC i dont know if you know anything about what i am about to say but i have over 350 buyer points on the web site can i spend them or how does that work i have looked over the web site many times i just cant figure out what i can do with them any advice???

  • @krstndevore - I am just the tech guy. Go to our site and click the live chat link. One of our Sales people can help you out.

  • my clutch doesnt have any free play in it and it doesnt like to fully disengage can u tell me why it does this?
