Faggot is worse in the UK because it's a 'foreign' word, it's unfamiliar. So in the UK daytime radio context it's almost as risky as saying cunt or something. There was a rather high profile scandal involving two BBC radio/TV host a while ago that led to one being fired. Merchant was worrying about whether it was going to create problems after the show.

But from what I've noticed, the british aren't as concerned about bad language guidelines as they are bad taste.
