Apparently, he choreographed as a nod to Fred Astaire, who was one of his dancing heroes. You can see it in the stylization of the costumes and some of the moves are very reminiscent of Astaire. Apparently Jackson admired Astaire's effortless smoothness of movement...and he, of course, was a stunning performer with the same effortless smoothness.
