I read somewhere that this song is about a couple committing suicide together. Hence, "the blade is sharp and fine, it could just slit us open," and, "only say the word and I will pour myself like wine."
@lizilizi1 I think the reason that they're still obscure is that they're so eclectic, and I think they're happy with it that way. The go from Shriekback crash-landing on a KC song to the the aggressive and militaristic Nemesis to experimental music like Glory Bumps. It's sometimes hard to figure out who Shriekback are. Now, if you're like me, that's a fun challenge, but most people don't want to spend the time. They want a playlist that's all vaguely the same and which doesn't challenge.
Oil and Gold was a perfect storm. Solid from beginning to end. Part of the dynamic of them arguing and parting ways. After this album, Shriekback and King Swamp were never able to capture the dynamic that made this one of the best beginning to end pieces of music.
It took me a while to 'get' this song, long time ago. I Maybe only the folks that got the Shriekback genre were the only ones meant to... Thanks for it all.
Has anyone seen Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River?" This song reminds me of the running score throughout the movie. Very similar without the vocals. Both great by the way.
@nirb8 I don't think that is a problem, there is always someone out there that knows shriekback, maybe an oldie like my self but I feel privileged to belong to such a restricted group of 'connoisseurs' . I still have the vinyl of oil and gold. And that new album is good news, I'm hoping to 'relisten' something with essence for a long time, tired and bored of all the junk that feels the air in this days. Thank you for the video> (read music).
Tell the college and alternative radio stations. They care enough to play the Shriek. Personally, I consider them among the class of music that's good to blow out the speakers and piss off the neighbors. Turn it up, please!
Thank you for posting. I hadn't heard this tune in years!! Fantastic stuff. The minimalist style meeting cool atmoshperics and some and the innovative, subdued vocal delivery in this song opened my ears up to many possibilites as a young musician.
Lost my virginity to this song..

A band I loved is still obscure after 20 years?! Really don't understand that. I guess it means I don't have to hand in my hipster card just yet.

This song helps me grasp something in my past almost unattainable by any other means.

yes. many of their songs have 500 views here. post a partially nude woman and you have 5 million. odd and sad.

Michael Mann, was a fan of Shriekback, and used several of their songs in his films Manhunter and Band of the Hand.

Re Shriekback as "the 80's Underworld"; Karl Hyde played on the (ahem) Sacred City album. Can't win them all I suppose.

Oil and Gold is one of the great "headphone" records ever made.
It takes you into it's world.

Can't agree with you more that they were/are painfully underrated. Just so you know, B is working on a new Shriek album as we speak. Spread the word.
Tinhuviel 2 years ago 17
well...this is the problem in loving an obscure underrated band. You have no one to spread the word to :-)
nirb8 2 years ago 7
Spread it anyway. Preach it like you've got....glory bumps!
