@TheDARKYOSHI64 He probably got the ROM of the game, played it on an emulator, muted the channels that emitted the sound effects, ergo leaving the channels that played the music by themselves.
@AcornStreetShow Things doesn't work that easy. If you mute the sound effects, you'll end up muting some of the channels too, because the channels used for the effects are the same than the melodies. Notice how in old games, when an effect plays, it cuts out some of the music's notes.
he may have grabbed the ROM and used a special program to rip all the music in its purest form (i.e not recording thru gameplay)
Best song in the game, bar none. What I want to know is why the hell this song never got any kind of arrangement? Seriously, this song demands a rock/metal arrangement. Hell, the song has a solo for crying out loud!
@IronFury It really sounds like it would complement a remix, too. GameBoy music always seems so ambitious; composers were eager to fashion melodies that carried a tune, and this is one that, I think, exemplifies such a sentiment. Few Mario games today arguably seek to pump out something that explores this kind of ground; they're more concerned with making the music create a mood, rather than come across as catchy, compelling. I find so many modern "tunes" forgettable; not so here.
@Uppa8 I think the same can be said for a lot of today's game soundtracks in general. Even with those I enjoy from today's games, they clearly lack that strong melody that makes the music stand out by itself and enhance the experience. Nowadays it's barely noticable, drowned out by loud noise, forgettable, or feels like it's "just enough". This one screams "final stage" all over it.
@IronFury I remedied that. This was the song I rearranged for the upcoming OverClocked ReMix project Badass: vol 1, an album of entirely boss themes. I think (hope!) I did the theme justice. Staytuned to ocremix.org for the album's official release!
I agree that not every song has to have a rock arrangement for it, but this one seems to lend itself better to a rock or metal style. Some video game songs don't sound quite as right with a rock arrangement though, for example, the Champion Battle theme in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow. I find that an orchestrated version is the best route for that piece. I definitely would like to hear more video game based funk though. The Oneups are the closest thing I've seen to that at this point.
@IronFury Never fear! Check OCRemix for their album "Badass, Vol. 1" which should be out in the next couple days and has an arrangement of this track on it.
I beat this game yesterday, such a great experience unlike any newer games (excluding Mega Man 9)!
