Okay, here’s where things get serious. Yes, Keith Moon had a serious side, and The Who’s second double concept album–as heavy a musical statement as has ever been made–benefited enormously from Moony’s rolling, surging, and at times downright funky full-kit onslaught. It isn’t about parts on this one; it’s the totality of Keith’s gutsy approach that absolutely blew my young drummer mind.
saw the who in boston well i know it was when who,s next came out was smoking gold what a show early 70s alot of drugs but my fav band never had a number 1 single???
Saw them at home in Boston-4th row center-when 'Who's Next" came out-71??? Keith moon blew himself oof stage from too much gunpowder in his bass drum-at the end they came out with hundreds of pies and we had a big pie fight-They were so good-No one can touch Keith Moon.
This version is awesome! Too bad it fades out, I would've loved to have heard the rest of it. Even better yet - to have seen it in actual moving video form.
The best thing about being my age is having seen OX and Keith live. They took the drums and bass from rhythm lines to lead lines on raw unadulterated talent. Chart a Who song sometime, you'll see I am right.
The thing is that The Who had four leads: a lead guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Everyone played like they were the lead. When it worked it was fantastic, when it didn't it was still damn good.
I saw them in Newcastle (UK) 5 Nov 73. The tapes started slowing so Townshend went berserk, ripped out the tapes, beat up Bob Pridden, kicked John's horn into the orchestra pit, ranted at the audience and strode off stage. The rest of the band looked at each other bewildered then the safety curtain came down. After 20 minutes, we could hear Keith's claves - Magic Bus! We went mad, security were flung into orchestra pit, guitars and drums were smashed. Brilliant. But I never got to see Quad live.
Keith possessed something this night that probably cannot be easily quantified, a double quadropened martial drive. Roger is trailing, the guitar and bass pursue.
I had to choose.Just didn't want to Capital centre just opend the first concert Was the the who/with lynyrd skynyrd.I choose .Alice cooper&zz top..And I could have gone to both. I still think about that.
I was at the Alice Cooper / ZZ Top show. I was 14 and away with my friends for the first time. An awesome experience! I remember the Who show and could swear the opening act was Queen.
@cjf799 That is a good point. If the rest of the band just stopped playing and Moon played what he normally did it would be a solo and drummer would envy.
what i love about music is that really great music cant be done by ones self al sections of instruments musty be appeciated and used in contrast to make a true harmonious sound
Keith & Ox absolutely DRIVE this song...and they drive the hell out of it gas pedal buried through the floorboards!
The coolest thing about Townshend's lyrics was he was the first of that generation questioning not only the older generation, but his own and everyone claiming to "have all the answers".
Truly one of the cornerstones of modern rock.
And one of the most kickassed hard rock songs ever!!!
Blimey, would you just listen to the drums on this?! It's Keith and John that hold this together. Pete definitely sounds off his game. And for all those who say that Keith couldn't keep time...oh really?! There has been a lot said about Keith falling to bits on this tour. A good deal of that was because his marriage had fallen apart and Kim had left him. However, if you listen to the drums on this, he was just as fantastic as he was back in the late 60s.
Per the description above I think it was from Largo, Maryland. Can't say for sure, though, because I think the '73 Philly show and the "73 Largo show get mixed up, and also because I wasn't there.
Aside from the split personality thing is there any merit to the idea that Quadrophenia was released around the time that quadrophonic sound systems were supposed to be all the rage?
Yeah, Pete said he wanted to use the quadrophonic sound system in a creative way, with all of the sounds seeping in from the corners, so it wasn't just one thing being presented, but it was a complex thing presented in an innovative way.
Hey folks, don't try to figure out the plot of the album; Just enjoy the music. Like all rock stars, Pete and Roger hit and miss, but at least we still have them.
Yeah, seems kinda like he's half-arsing his guitar during the chorus. In my opinion, that's where they need his guitar the most because they can't do the horns live.
I tell you what, this Quadrophenia stuff was deemed not to work to good because of the backing tracks and audience bewilderment with the story ( in the USA ), but just for pure rock n roll this is superb.
i still have trouble getting the story (other than its about a skitzphrenic who fan growing up in london in the 60's and getting booted from his house and being in a gang and all that) if anyone wants to explain it a little more to me. i know that "Tommy" was a much easier concept to understand
Quadrophenia is really about an adolescent who is searching for identity via a subculture (mod). While this identity for atime seems to provide all the answers, a series of events eventually make this individual feel isolated and questioning the group itself. Through intense spirtitual questioning, the individual eventually realizes he must forge ahead as his own person. In some ways, it is a metaphor for the 60's and how people put so much faith into Dylan, drugs, etc. only to be let down
The name is a variation on the incorrect popular usage of the medical diagnostic term schizophrenia as dissociative identity disorder to reflect the four distinct personalities of Jimmy, the opera's protagonist—each said to represent the personality of one member of The Who.
Yeah, I thought that was the weakest part of Townshend's loose story. Each member representing a personality was a good idea in theory but it didn't really connect very well.
Okay, here’s where things get serious. That fill in the chorus totally makes the song. Never thought I'd say that the drum fills were the hook to a song.
