JJ Abrams wrote and directed it and it was obviously him that wanted to pay tribute to early Speilberg films. Sure the story may have recycled but as far as capturing that nostalgic sense of mystery and wonder Abrams nailed it. When they replay footage, they notice that something has escaped from the train thats terrorizing the town........

I'm not a trek fan either, actually. This is the only star trek movie I've ever seen, and I've never watched the series except a couple episodes of Voyager. However, I think that what JJ abrams did to the series is just phenomenal. It pulls the audience into an experience. If anything, I think fans might dislike the movie more because they think it's non-canonical or somehow disrespectful, but I loved it. I think abrams is also involved in the show Lost, which I've never seen, but you might've.
