F*kn brilliant!!! This movie was an important and positive part of my coming out, regardless of the so-called "negative" stereotypes which some people in the community got their panties all tied in knots about.
There are so many great lines in this movie. I heard the gay community was in an uproar for he most part when this movie came out because of the stereotypes. But, I think they were trying to cover all sorts of types of gay people from the flamer to the closet case etc...It also showed just how prevalent substance abuse was among the community. Remember, this was just one year after Stonewall.
I have seen this dozens of times, but still, the end sort of eludes me. What is the importance of what Michael wrote on Harolds card? Why such a secret? And then the straight dude in the whole movie...Did he really mean to tell Michael he had loved him in college or was it all in Michael's head? Was this movie all about self-loathing and guilt about being gay?
@boizboi Cowboy was gay too, sadly was nearly homeless but Cliff Gorman (Emory) and his wife took him in until he died of AIDS,. Gorman died of cancer... RIP EMORY!
"What I am Michael is a 32 year-old, ugly, pock marked Jew fairy, and if it takes me a little while to pull myself together, and if I smoke a little grass before I get up the nerve to show my face to the world, it's nobody's god damned business but my own. And how are you this evening?" is one of the greatest lines ever uttered in a film. And my god it is delivered magnificently here!

"Curiously, part of the cast of this movie died of AIDS."
Part? All but three of them. Curiously? What on earth did mommy do to you? Allow me to put this in rather bald terms: those guys were swallowing semen, and having it ejaculated into their rectums, where it entered their bloodstream via small lacerations in the bowel wall. Now, are you still curious about how they died?
Hummly, you should have added, "And how are you this morning?" at the end of your quote, and you'd sound just like Harold! I actually read your post aloud in Harold's voice and it's as though Mart Crowley wrote it! Hummly, you big queen, you!

"a culture soon to break out,and brilliantly captured in these composite stereotypical characters. We've come long way babies!"
Well, you've certianly learned how to screw up elections since then. Do us all a favor and go back into your closet come November, you can come back out when the polls close in Hawaii, and please, will you PLEASE shut up about gay marriage! We'd like maybe to see a straight black man in the white house, and you people are NOT helping.
As a closeted gay teenager attending private school in Boston in 1970, this was the 1st film I ever went to alone.
The self hating bitchiness among gays was so real back then, indicitive of a culture soon to break out,and brilliantly captured in these composite stereotypical characters. We've come long way babies!
Excellent Drama from Freidkin. I was lucky enough to have buddy record this off cable for me and transfer it to DVD.I showed this one night to a group of friends. being straight myself. My guest met the showing with the usual "Are you Gay, what's this all about My reply "grow up Butch You always say you love well made movies so what's your issue
yes he played the Tailor who marries Zeital "What does that poor, skinny Tailor want with Zeital? She and Motyl have been friends since they were children! They talk, they play They play??? What do they play?? They're only children! Ah, from such children come other children!!" :)
You see this guy standing at the door and you expect a deep masculine voice and when he laughs, you can't help but laugh, totally unexpected. Brilliant!
Not having seen the movie yet, im definately motivated to see it more now for this scene alone (Not the actual reason for seein it in the first place) but its pretty damn good deliverance....Im already in love with this film!
there is a better exchange between Harold and Michael later in the film. Harold completely Shuts Michael completely down w/ his shade! "Everything is PAID FOR!!!!!!!!!!"
@randy0987 Yes, his name was Leonard Frey. He co-starred in an early-80's hit TV show and later died of AIDS in that decade. You can also find him guest-paneling on the "Match Game" show (1983-85).
