They hire others to drive them around, grade their roads, dig their foundations. What they don't have or hire....they borrow from the neighbors. Not nice at all...the Amish feel the impact of gas prices because #1 many count on tourists to buy their goods and whatnot. And if no one is driving....it's bad for tourism. #2 they use propane gas for their stoves, refrigerators, washers, and dryers and that gas cost goes up when regular gas goes up. They do not use electric so they use gas powered appliances. Please educate yourself before calling someone a fraud. They are good honest hard working people not frauds.

I am one of the few amish people who have a youtube account which i manage from a computer at the local library. yes, we have washing machines but as far as I know there are no amish communities that allow driers. Oh and the gas is for machines like tillers, lawnmowers, and such. A few of the more liberal amish communities even allow tractors and/or skid loaders

But most of them encourage Bible reading, and their lifestyle is more a way of living out what they believe God wants them to do. They depend on the group far more than most Americans can understand. It would be almost impossible to live an 18th century lifestyle, without having a community to share resources and help each other.

I am one of the few amish people who have a youtube account which i manage from a computer at the local library. yes, we have washing machines but as far as I know there are no amish communities that allow driers. Oh and the gas is for machines like tillers, lawnmowers, and such. A few of the more liberal amish communities even allow tractors and/or skid loaders

Still in this modern day Amish communities throughout the UK would be welcomed with open arms though the land is far too expensive here. I understand there is a Beachy Amish community however in Southern Ireland. Rather wonderful!

@garyography The Amish religion varies. Some are so cultish that they forbid reading the Bible and encourage fornication and drugs. That kind is mostly in Indiana. But most of them encourage Bible reading, and their lifestyle is more a way of living out what they believe God wants them to do. They depend on the group far more than most Americans can understand. It would be almost impossible to live an 18th century lifestyle, without having a community to share resources and help each other.

I've been to the Amish community. Their belief is that using technology that requires things like electricity is a sin. Simple tools are the only tools you are allowed to use. They have one telephone for emergencies in the town, but thats it. If an Amish community is using machine it is a hypocritical Amish community. I.E. Frauds.

some allow cars, some only if the cars are painted black.
