'If I should lose you' Stan Kenton recorded 2/11/53, vocal by Chris Conner, some of the personnel: Lee Konitz, Bill Holman, Richie Kamuca, Maynard Ferguson, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino, Stan Levey, Stan Kenton. Whew! What a line-up, and one of my all-time favorite Kenton/Conner pieces - also on 'Charlie Parker with Strings', of which I have the 10 LP (priceless) on Mercury. BIRD LIVES.
D7 G-7 A-7b5 D7b9 If I should lose you G-7 F-7 The stars would fall from the sky Bb7 Dmaj7 Ebmaj7 If I should lose you F-7 Bb7 Dmaj7 Ebmaj7 Leaves would wither and die C-7 F7 Bbo7 Bbmaj7 Birds in Maytime theyd sing a mournful refrain Bbmaj7 A-7b5 D7b9 G-7 C-7 F7 A-7b5 D7b9 and I would go around hating the sound of rain G-7 A-7b5 D7b9 But with you beside me G-7 F-7 The rose would bloom in the snow
I screwed this up. I tried to line up chords with words but spaces take up characters in the count...phooey...So I think the next one is better. If not....I give up.
BTW,..I think Carmen McRae or Sassy Vaughn did a really great version of this where there is just bass and vocals till tenor sax solo comes in. I can post it later.
If I should lose you The stars would fall from the sky If I should lose you Leaves would wither and die The birds in May-time-they'd sing a mournful refrain and I would wander around- hating the sound of rain With you beside me The rose would bloom in the snow With you beside me No winds of winter would blow I gave you my love - and I was living a dream But living would seem - in vain If I Hating the rain - If I All is in Vain - if I If I ever lost you
I have that same problem. There are between five hundred and a thousand tunes floating around in my head from the 1920's to the present as well as Classical. Many people have to identify the titles for me....Sometimes it just comes out of me on the piano, or bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, or handwhistling.....
Yes, that's it! What a pretty melody. (Now how does the bridge go? lol) I haven't really heard any recordings of that song, but it was rattling around in my subconscious. I will look into those recordings. Thanks Phil and everyone!
Oops, my goofs - of course it is Chris CONNOR, not CONNER, and I have the Bird '10 INCH' LP.

Oh, okay, I see you've been covered on this question long ago. It is a great tune, one of the all-time deep lyrics, I think.
Just heard your Born to Be Blue and I loved it. You're singing so beautifully. I totally relate. Thanks so much for getting in touch with me! Andy

It definitely sounds like "IF I Should Lose You" which has a great version by Wes Montgomery, for one. And Ella definitely did it more than once.

That's the name, "If I Should Lose You".
I looked for a link from Billy Holiday, but couldn't find one. I think Ella did it.
