@1madaboutguitar Just to clarify, there are two engines on the train due to the various routes and branches it will be surveying over the next couple of days. The nature of said routes requires the train to reverse several times, and it saves heaps of time top and tailing rather than running round. Also, often at reversal points there are not facilities available to run around, which is why there are 2 engines required on this type of train.
@CeTrains They should just have one power unit, equipped with a modest size engine to do the survey. Not a powerful locomotive on each end to move one coach. Might be good for rail enthusiasts but its a farce.
@1madaboutguitar Usually there is a specific Track Recording Unit, which requires no diesel engines at either end, as it has it's own. However, this unit is currently off on maintenance and so, this formation was required.

What a complete waste of Hp. No wonder ticket prices are so high...

@CeTrains You say that but this is common and you know it. I see this assembly all the time.

@1madaboutguitar Would be better off with a pair of Class 20s.
I keep saying DRS need to buy some new smaller (type 2) engines for nuclear flasks, RHTTs etc. where a larger locomotive isn't necessary.
