What i don't understand is how do they calculate how big and how heavy the star is using telescopic pictures.

@17jun1989 they calculate it by the amounts of fuel burned, the heaver a star is, the brighter it burns, basically it has more fuel to burn and this star uses is very fast.

R136a1diameter is 20.000.000 km and VY canis Majoris diameter is 3.000.000.000 km so Canis Majoris is way bigger than R136a1
