to anyone reading this: does anyone know of any palces other than sherbourne where i can get hormone therapy? i called sherbourne and their waiting list is a very frustrating 2 years. i cant possibly wait 2 years; ill go insane counting the days, like a prisoner waiting for the end to come save him from his misrable existance.
Yes, there is such a thing as a woman with a "penis," though she might not think of her own body in those terms (or she might, depends on the person).
(comment too long, so posting more in second comment)
A trans woman who hasn't had genital surgery (and there are many reasons not to, including medical, financial or personal) can still identify as a woman, live as a woman, go on hormones, change her name, and change the sex on her Ontario driver's license. She might be able to change her passport too, and her OHIP card, but not her birth certificate. There isn't a lot of consistency in policy on identity docs, though most people have much more consistency in their own identities. :-)
Sorry I asumed I was signed in but my sister was when I posted this:
Who knew (legally speaking),
Thanks for the help, but I still have one unanswered question what criteria determin the official gender of a trans person in such a stage? Can they simply declare either or? Or is there a spicific way to define that?
Im a MTF Transsexual. Ive been on HRT for 3 months and 1 week. I've also changed my legal name on all of my id.....but i still have a "M" on my health card and ext. Can you change the letter "M" to "F" on your health card with out getting SRS???
Unfortunately you can't get your gender changed on your health card or birth certificate without a letter from a surgeon, stating that you have had SRS. I was actually told this directly from a Service Ontario clerk, when I went to get my name and picture changed on my OHIP card.
You can however have your gender changed on your drivers license, as long as you can provide a letter from a therapist or doctor, stating that you are transitioning.
I have been on HRT (Hormonal replacement therapy) for about two months! Im happy! If people in the Toronto, Ontario area are seeking HRT, i would highly recommend that you contact the 410 Sherbourne Health Centre. The contact information is below:
@Maiku2010 Did they say to come back in two years? or that the waiting list is two years? The medical community generally says you can't get hormones until you've crosslived for a year, or even two. You can just pick an MD that has some sensitivity to the gay community (and therefore knowledge)... and tell him you want hormones and get can monitor you with blood tests now and then. They like the responsibility idea... but tell him you know people get hormones from black market. Just be smart.
Joanna, Trans PULSE is for all trans people, whether or not they have transitioned, or even intend to. For some people, transitioning socially and/or medically is critically important, but some people don't fit themselves neatly within the male-to-female or female-to-male categories. Oh, and it's for all trans people regardless of the sex they were assigned at birth.
I assume this project doesn't aim at gays and lesbians, as I imagine their medical needs are generally mainstream. I guess this is mainly for transitioning guys who are getting female hormones? (I imagine that process needs specialist monitoring.)
Actually gay, lesbian and bisexual people are also discriminated against in health care settings but this project focuses on trans people because the experiences are different and require a separate response. Trans PULSE is not about 'guys getting female hormones'. Trans communities are very diverse as are our needs. We require respectful treatment regardless of whether we are seeing a specialist, a GP or accessing social services.
Would be great to have such a survey specifically for women born with a transsexual condition, being that not all women of transsexual origin are automatically LGBT or even TG identified.
Good point - thanks for your comment. We allowed people to self identify on the survey to capture those who identify as being "of trans history or of trans experience" as well as those who identify as trans.
This is wonderful!!! I would love to replicate this effort here in my own community. Please share more information about how you designed this, and of course the survey and the methods for disseminating the survey and collecting results. This would be a great resource (I think) for any community.
Thank you and can't wait to hear of the outcomes of this effort!

An interesting topic has come up recently among myself and my friends....
How do you determine the gender of a transexual or more specifically, is there such thing as a women with a penis?
Or is that REALLY considered to be a man still?
I live in Ontario Canada and am having a hard time finding this stuff in relation to Canadian/Ontario law.
Can anyone help me put here?

Ah, I wish I could take this survey. XD I love surveys.
It's an awesome project. I'm really curious as to the information they'll gather from this.
