When I suggested my band play this song, I played it for them and they looked at me like I was crazy. I wanted to pop those fags in the mouth. I guess there are some compatability issues!.. Long live Joe Walsh!!!
I cry everytime I hear this song. When you are single or just need your partner. This really hits home . Joe walsh is my favorite guitarist , one of my favorite lyricist and singers. He is awsome . :}} please excuse my spelling . lol
"Why can't we make music like this anymore" -- the 60's revolution ran out of steam after the Vietnam War was finally ended, after MLK was shot, when the rebellious students started raising kids, when the next crop of highschool kids got sick of the counterculture values - the world cycles on, just try to preserve the good bits like JW
I wonder if there was any planned symbolism or "meaning" to joe being the only one not wearing blue, not being a charter member of the band and all....
It's simply amazing how the eagles transformed as a band after he was asked to join. He elevated their catalog of music from prior to his membership while simply elevating the entire band as a whole after joining.
If you like the eagles and like this, check out "birdcall morning" by JW.
I know Joe hadn't officially become an Eagle at this point, but this is the best Eagles lineup, with Randy Meisner on the bass. I hear the bass, but I don't see who is playing it. Maybe Randy didn't get the invite.
@astranine No Randy did not get the invite or perhaps he was busy. The Bass was done by George Perry i think. On the LP So What It's Randy,Glenn and Don Henley and Dan Fogelberg who are on the LP version With Joe
OH MAN... i love this song. even to this day i blast the classic 70"s every chance i get. in the car with bose surround, at home with massive 7.2 digital surround and still cant get enuff of it.
I've liked this song since I was 12, which was in 1976, and was always entranced by it, but I had no clue what it was about. I only recently found this song is about Joe's daughter Emma dying when she was a very small child.
Man, I'll have to pull this vid out so I know how to dress for my next 70's party. I think I saw Ron Burgundy in there from 'The Anchorman'. All in all there 90's version was better.
Old or new, Eagles or James Gang.....who cares. Joe Walsh brings s lot of character with huge talent to the shows. It is amazing to see a star with this talent know how to have some fun on stage, and still be note for note perfect.
I've been singing and playing instruments for 35 years. I can hear a huge difference in the Hell Freezes Over video vs this one. It's more pristine. Just because they were younger doesn't mean they were better. When you're a musician experience accounts for everything. Joe uses a twelve string on Hell Freezes over, probably because he realizes a twelve string gives the song a more acoustic ambient sound. Don also upgraded to a Gibson electric. They also added piano on the HFO version.
@Helicon2112 I agree with parts of what you wrote. There's soul and pain released here from a band that has been on the road for years. The HFO vid maybe "sound" cleaner and with better instruments but the way they sing it here....man. It's my opinion, but I can feel it more in this performance. Also notice how close they are together here. PRIME
I don't think so. They're more experienced musician's now and have refined their songs. I like the was Joe sings this song much better in the Hell Freezes over concert then I do in this video.
Nope. they were hungry then, had new experiences to ezplore. Now thier older more jaded, burnt out. Why is it that a new artist may release a great record, then a sos so record, then nothing. Back then an artist released a fantastic record, then a better one, then another! I'm not just a classic rock die hard, I love alternative, modern rock also, they just don't have staying power like back in the day.
It takes two sides remember. Just because no other eagle wrote his opinion. I read Felders book and also read "To The Limit", so please do not just go by one opinion. Joe had nothing to do with this, and they are still a great band, just like the Stones, who look 3 days older than dirt. By The Limit's author is Marc Elliot>.........................
this is back when they were still cool, then they "henley, frey" fired don felder because know the wrinkled old farts only think about their cut of money, not only fired him but replaced him with a lesser musician,Love the music but fuck the eagles, they went against everything they stood for,for a little bit more money"like they needed it"In short, the record company won, hail to the elites.ass kissing money grabbing traitors
I love this song so much, Joe can be crazy and funny, but also quite serious, to bad this song is for his little girl Emma he lost in a car crash. Hope to see you soon in a live concert. Love to meet you in person.
Wow, i heard this song during a Bose speaker demo a while back. It was the HD version that was pretty recent. I loved the song but never knew what it was about until a few days ago. This video is very powerful and Joe sings it from the heart. Definitely puts a knot my throat when i listen to it and think about the pain he went through losing his daughter. Worse pain a parent can feel is outliving his children. Fav video of mine now.
didn't know what happen with his poor little dotter......but this makes grow up (if ever needed) the respect for this wonderful guy. xxx god bless you for ever joe!
Alfrunk, it is no longer a pity, there is someone that loves me, thank God not you.........this song is so beautiful it is all about loving someone, God bless his little Emma (Joe's child), and we can all relate to it, it makes me cry, knowing the real reason he wrote this........
Joe this song is absolutely the most moving song you ever performed, sad that it was written for Emma, your daughter you lost at a young age, it sure touches many other people like me who wish they had some one to help them through the night. .......wish I had some one to love and hold me and help me through the night
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this song is ridiculously beautiful, lol. Call me lame, but I think the second time I ever listened to it I was moved to tears. Great song, Joe really has a knack for expressing very powerful feelings with really simple language and style.
I need this son quite ofte and the words are so fitting to my problems, sing Joe, you great talent, may you never lose is, rockon friend.....one day I hope to meet you.....dreaming
Beautiful.. makes me cry. Joe you are the talent that makes the Eagles, I know this song must have been before you joined, but their back up is awesom. a song to drink and cry by.........
Yeah. Oh man, I used to hide in this song while dodging our family's "anger management" issues, but as a man i still take refuge in it. Very emotional.
Ditto Song for Emma. The first time I realized it was about a child dying I almost blubbered. Then I got to meet him & asked if it was for someone he knew. "I wrote it when my daughter died." Conversation killer, but he was cool about it. I read a good account of this by Stevie Nicks, who says it got her over herself.
In Concert was a BRILLIANT show! No flash, no fluff & clutter, just a live show!
These lyrics mean more to me than any other song I've heart. They have since I was a little kid & first listened to it, and it's still just as potent today. For me it's truly transcendantly beautiful.
Thank you for sharing such a jewel of a clip Brother! Bonus points, God's blessings, and good karma to follow you for your generosity!
I was at this show. I can't believe you found or got your hands on this; spacejo? Great job!!! This was a pre-recorded concert that was to be shown on ABC's "In Concet" in the mid-70's? I think THIS recording was in late '74 or early '75? Joe also performed his standard; "Rocky Mountain Way" as the 'encore' (he played like 5 tunes for this thing) and that was the most hysterical thing I ever saw at a concert? Too long to explain; but Joe definitely had fun backstage before he took off? : )
no words can discribe his lyrical style, joe walsh knows how to capture the inner child in all of us and put it in music so beautifully arranged , i get goosebumps listening to this song among many he has written and sung , he is sincere in his craft thats a lost art in modern age , anything that can make me tear up or just plain feel good listening too is pretty powerful , so kudos joe your a legend
Feldner was partners in my boyscout patrol leaders band, Flow...I mean, there are so many connections to me personally...John Winter was the guy who painted penguines on our water cans, then he did the Incidentals, Flow..and then Don did his thing...God bless
Astranine is right, This song comes from the "So What" album (my personal Walsh fav) and to play it on an 8 track whilst doing a little screwing in the back seat of a 69 Chevy Impala is the proper way to listen to this cut.
This song is arguably the most beautiful ballad Joe ever wrote, & I remember seeing this performance when it first came out & just being blown away...& I wasn't too surprised later on to hear that Joe had accepted the Eagles' invitation to join the band. Joe, IMHO, was the best thing that ever happened to the Eagles...and the Eagles not giving Don Felder the respect & recognition he deserved was the dumbest thing they ever did.
Joe Walsh playing with the Eagles is like Albert Pujols playing on a little league team. Just a waste of time to play with people who are so far beneath you.
technics and virtiosity is not everything... those guys can connect to his music and they have spirit and essence to offer ... that s the reason why Joe Walsh was happy to play with them...
No doubt, No doubt. I love that album that Joe did in 74 with this song, closes with Emma, who was a daughter he had died in a car wreck, IIRC ...it's very touching.
Why cant we make music like this anymore? real simple...We live in a society deemed with control and governmental control of our freedom. The younger generation cannot comprehend this era...If you undwerstand what Im saying,Like George Carlin said.....Its all about government control these days, making the public think we have choices and freedom when we dont anymore.Lets see,What new law can we make this year,...
@Stayingback71: Oh GIVE me a FREAKIN BREAK DUDE. You are a fucking FOOL and a WHINING little piece of SHITSince WHEN does the GOVERNMENT interfere with people making MUSIC?How bout an example where the govt controls music? If ANYTHING they dont do ENOUGH to keep disgusting filth (Like "gangsta Rap" trash..every other word is F** YOU and "HO and Bitch")out of the public eye
Makes me sick when I hear everybody blaming EVERYTHING (in this case not having great music anymore) the freakin' GOVT.
exactly...record companies market this F'ing shit rap to the younger crowd so they can make their millions. As long as they pay taxes, the gov. doesn't give a shit.
@StayingBack71 im 14 and i wish i could do something about it. all my friends are all brainwashed with this awful music about sex and drugs that take no talent to make whatsoever while im sitting in the corner listening to the eagles, led zeppelin, def leppard, tom petty and many great artists that some of my friends have never even heard of. if only i could become famous i would try to bring this music back with my guitar.
@guywhoputsupvideos I can give you the open tuning for this song...and others..Steven Stills...Keith Richards...email me...don't worry about becoming famous....worry about about playing well...
The backup vocals on the album are quite obviously the eagles. You can't mistake that sound. This is weird to see since it looks like the band but it's officially not.
I've never seen this performance. It looks like a preview of what to come during their 1994 Hell Freezes Over tour reunion. This song was one of their acoustic songs. They had it back then and still have it now, the harmony was awesome.
This song is from the "So What" album. Joe had just suffered the loss of his 3 year old daughter, Emma, in a car accident and the album's title was Joe's way of expressing his loss. Joe wrote a song for Emma and it too is on the album but I have to believe "Help Me Through the Night" is about this loss too.
I don't think So What is in relation to the accident, but I just commented as well on that song, it's one one of his best that didn't make the Look What I Did! Collection CD set. I enjoy that one often as well.
it´s around 1975, just a few months before walsh joined the eagles, meisner, henley and frey sang back up in this tune of the so what album, and felder was on tour with walsh....
This is not an Eagles performance and Randy wasn't on a break. This was in 1975 before Joe was a member of the Eagles. Glenn and Don sang backing vocal for Joe's album "So What" and this live performance became his 1976 solo album "You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind"

The AHHHHHH harmonies at the end give me goosebumps everytime. Why can't top 40 be like this anymore?

The backup vocals on the album are quite obviously the eagles. You can't mistake that sound. This is weird to see since it looks like the band but it's officially not.

I have the LP and taped the track to MiniDisc, but there is the Hell Freezes Over live version too.

But... Where is Rhandy Maisner... Or Thimoty?

Randy was probably taking a break. Timothy joined the band after Hotel California, replacing Randy, who had had enough of working with Don and Glen.
astranine 3 years ago
This is not an Eagles performance and Randy wasn't on a break. This was in 1975 before Joe was a member of the Eagles. Glenn and Don sang backing vocal for Joe's album "So What" and this live performance became his 1976 solo album "You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind"
