I was there last summer too. I may have a video response to put up about how 17 persons in one of the bunkers died. It was a 280mm (i think) navy shell that was really a direct hit on the gun cavity, but the shell didn't detonate, but instead penetrated the wall, bouncing between the walls of the room on the other side, until it finally dug into the grass outside the door.
You must have seen the sign outside. We took the tour listening to the recorded guide, which told this story.
I was there with my brother and his girlfriend. We were visiting as many historic places as we could during 6 days, and the one thing that struck me was that whereever we went during those days (all over normandy), we could always read that things happened during the same few hours on june 6th 1944. That gave me quite a hint about how massive the invasion was.
Hope someday I can visit all the locations from band of brothers. That's my dream.
