When Georgia declared its independence in 1991, S.Ossettia broke away from Georgia and declared its own independence. Georgia lost that civil war and S.Ossetia became de facto independent. Population of S.Ossettia is a mix of ethnic Russians, Ossetinians and Georgians (who were mostly driven out after the civil war). That population feels it has little in common with Georgia and is drawn towards N.Ossetia (part of russia) and Russia itself. Russia eventually granted S.Ossetians citizenship.

you should check the 2,000 figure. It has not been confirmed by anyone independent. Russian hospitals count 200 dead so far. It is possible that some bodies have not been recovered yet, but it appears that the 2,000 figure has no basis in reality.

You can't respond with sanctions when your citizens are under fire. You respond with fire. Iraq, Iran, N. Korea are all different because there was no active war before sanctions were used. When Georgia declared its independence in 1991, S.Ossettia broke away from Georgia and declared its own independence. Georgia lost that civil war and S.Ossetia became de facto independent. Population of S.Ossettia is a mix of ethnic Russians, Ossetinians and Georgians (who were mostly driven out after the civil war). That population feels it has little in common with Georgia and is drawn towards N.Ossetia (part of russia) and Russia itself. Russia eventually granted S.Ossetians citizenship.

However, of course being independent and free and speaking your language, and having your culture is more important than money. The ONLY reason Ossetians got citizenship and lets say Transdinster didn't was because Moldova walked away from NATO but Georgia welcomed it. However, my point was that if you take nationalism aside, Georgia and Moldova and Ukraine and Armenia etc would have been all better off being part of Russia.

I actually think the real goal of Russia is to actually re annex Georgia or at very least break off the two regions of conflict. In the end the region will be impoverished like all areas outside Moskow oblast. I was in Shakhty and the only people who had money were manufacturers and drug dealers and gangsters. The Gangsters stood on street corners with thousands of Rubles in thier pockets and did money changing from the pocket. Really strange.

Read Times and watch AP press reports - they all agree that Georgia decided to take a military action inside South Ossettia, which was controlled by Russia. Russia will retake South Ossettia and NATO will not help and that would be the end of it. Don't worry. Lets just hope that there will be no more civilian casualties there.
