  • Do the protesters realize that each college makes a choice to be on the Common App and that many still offer their own app in addition?

  • awesome opposum

  • This is nothing, you should have seen the UC students on their Darfur divestment strike.

  • Dude... if you're trying to do all of your college apps a week before the final deadline... the common app IS YOUR GOD.

Also, I got into the University of Chicago, hilariously enough.

  • Is this what students do in the Chicago? Elsewhere, we have things like football games to gather, cheer in unison, and scream profanity in public. Get a life kids. You don't get credit for creating mobs centered on whining.

  • this is what I don't like about U Chicago

  • that's just stupid.

  • Wait, let me get this right...

You guys want to write separate essays for every college you attend?

If you think you have to have some kind of "uncommon" question to be original in writing, you must not write very well.

    But seriously. Wow.

  • @bearislost09 Yeah.... But they do have the common app.. for good. And I used it. I probably wouldn't be going without it. I have about a thousand others in my freshman class that aren't too "uncommon" thanks to it.

  • what's wrong with the common app?

  • Ugh, I am so disappointed that UChicago has switched to the Common App; I was really looking forward to completing the Uncommon App. At least the essays are still uncommon...

  • this is hilarious.

  • Yeh it was very fun to write an essay about your community and background at the dinner table( anyway I wrote a really good essay)

  • hahaha, this is cool.

thank goodness i got to do the uncommon application, but i'm sorry for those who are stuck with the common :(

  • I really appreciate all of you who turned up for this but I'm also wondering what we, as juniors and below in high school, are supposed to do about this. The uncommon app gave those of us who are less conventional a shot at this spectacular institution, now we're left alone in the dark fighting with personality-less 5.0 and 1600-ers. Any suggestions for the class of 2013?

  • Chicago will still have an "uncommon question" essay supplement next year. That was the part of the uncommon app that really mattered, and Chicago will still place heavy emphasis on the essay. The problem is that the sheer number of the applicant pool next year will sky rocket.

Advice: Tie the question to something that is truly special to you, that you can talk about in a genuine voice. With the "uncommon question", its easy to fall for the "make the essay sound deep and thoughtful" trap.

  • Tell me about it. I'm no enemy of essay writing, but regardless it's going to be an iNsAnEly competitive process. It kind of makes me wish I weren't so in love with U of C. So it is.

I truly appreciate the advice. Thank you so much.

  • Hahah, I LOVE this. This application was by far the most fun to complete... now I'm just hoping I get in.

  • Too bad U of C is switching to the Common App for this fall's applicants.

  • FUCK YOU COMMON APP FUCK YOU COMMON APP ...well .. lol i hope i get in to U of C i hear fun goes there to die but that's not scaring me

  • I went to U of C because of the application.

  • that girl in the pink who was walking away looks like me, except i wasn't there. weeeiiiird.

  • Haha - anyone know if I can still find one of those maroon "I am Uncommon" shirts somewhere on campus?

  • sweeeet

  • I had a math review session while this was going on and had to contend eith all of this sort of unorganized noise while reviewing proofs...

  • omg i love this as a UChicago applicant
