U only realise how dangerous water realy is once u have faced that moment of being pulled down on a huge wave and struggling to get up. I was dead for 3 minutes because of this but now days we have the best technoligy. So dont take life for granted people.

In 1986 ,1987,I used to walk by Mark Foo on my way to work on the rella Mae at pier 7 in Honolulu.always exchanged nods and occasional hellos. He was doing work at KPOI radio.surf stuff. I lived and surf the North Shore, death from waves was an everyday thing in the winter. Its a part of the game, so if you take off on big waves be prepared to die or don't do it.

mark was a bit run down from the flight from hawaii and then running on reserves paddling out and catching those waves PLUS the water is cold at mavericks. and like snow skiing, most accidents happen later in the day. you are a bit tired and while your mind is saying lets catch one more before lunch, your body is getting low on blood sugar and becomming more fatigued.
next thing you are down and then you have to really bring forth reserves. he didn have the juice to release the leash..
@sing4evermore the forces in the undercurrent of a wave like that combined with the darkness of the water would not have made it easy and likely impossible to locate him in time. Possibly at the expense of another life. Sometimes those guys stay underwater for 2 waves and bythe time you realize they are in trouble it's too late. The best we can hope for in hindsight is that he was not conscious and didn't suffer and is now in a better place.
During 3:44 of this video you can see the interview he's talking about in Monster Mavericks video. The interview that he's talking about starts at 3:40 and it's right after the whole thing happens. Foo catches a wave then Parsons and Little and Parons can feel someone under him.

It takes a special kind of person to get out there and ride waves of that big. Mark did not die for nothing. He died doing what he loved, and I think that's very honorable.

Mark, You are remembered an revered. I am sorry you had to die to give credibility to Maverick's. You saved my life. I am a slow learner, but you made me look at my own mortality in a manner which has banished my hubris in big waves. Please don' t take this the wrong way, but at least you no longer need a board to surf. Walk on the water Sir Foo...a true knight of surfing. Most sincere respect.

I lived and surf the North Shore, death from waves was an everyday thing in the winter. Its a part of the game, so if you take off on big waves be prepared to die or don't do it.

mark was a bit run down from the flight from hawaii and then running on reserves paddling out and catching those waves PLUS the water is cold at mavericks. and like snow skiing, most accidents happen later in the day. you are a bit tired and while your mind is saying lets catch one more before lunch, your body is getting low on blood sugar and becomming more fatigued.
next thing you are down and then you have to really bring forth reserves. he didn have the juice to release the leash..

@sing4evermore the forces in the undercurrent of a wave like that combined with the darkness of the water would not have made it easy and likely impossible to locate him in time. Possibly at the expense of another life. Sometimes those guys stay underwater for 2 waves and bythe time you realize they are in trouble it's too late. The best we can hope for in hindsight is that he was not conscious and didn't suffer and is now in a better place.

During 3:44 of this video you can see the interview he's talking about in Monster Mavericks video. The interview that he's talking about starts at 3:40 and it's right after the whole thing happens. Foo catches a wave then Parsons and Little and Parons can feel someone under him.
