Christof, if you find every correlation between brain activity and visual consciousness you still will not be able to say how neuronal firing, (even if you know exactly where it is and under what conditions it happens) can be red. This is a problem that is simply outside the scope of reductionism. Reductionism will get you correlation between neuronal firing and mental experience. It will never tell you how neuronal firing can be mental experience.
@vsaluki a mental experience is because of synchronisation between theta-gamma brainwaves which mobilises and give rise to neural activity. hence neuronal firing is mental experience, true story
very interesting. but his accent really freaks me out. as someone born in the us he still has that very special german accent ... this is unbelievable. and the hair of course!
2:36 Covered the GAMUT, not "gambit"! I would have expected better from someone in his position. That sort of malapropism is the result of learning the language "naturalistically", as another native English speaker with poor English recently wrote.
I've just started reading Christoff's book. It's neat since he spent over a decade studying the biophysics of neural information processing. Sure, Linus Pauling became a bit of a charletan later in life, but its excusable with such a great and thoughtful intellect
Excellent talk on the nature of consciousness. Yet the big question not addressed is whether conscious sensations (qualia) require energy? If yes then why is qualia not predicted in any physical theory since low energy phenomena like its generation are supposedly very well understood by physics. If no then an extension of physics will be required that goes beyond seeing reality as only material. In either case it will require a revolution in physics.
I believe Koch's view would be that molecular energies and electrical action potentials would be the energies required in order to generate these experiential qualia - although surely there are atomic energies to discuss.
"Quest" discusses, for example, 40Hz visual cortex AP oscillations which are thought to be relevant in producing visual qualia. Moderate panpsychism would assume that cells have a form of consciousness themselves, produced by ATP/O energies, acids, NTs and spec. of neural fn.
It would be a scandal indeed to leave cness out of science. 2+2=4 maybe true but what is it that verifies it? Cness. It is cness that does science itself. It's like the eye that sees the world but cannot see itself. But if we study our own eye with the use of a mirror this would not violate epistemic objectivity. So it would be with studying cness.
Christof looks like Harrison Ford with Arnold's accent.
