@NYDrummer16 Thanks! Nice videos, and I see that you're a Muse fan. I know Dom Howard used to use A Custom hi-hats but then made the switch to K Customs. My hats aren't quite as dry, but they do the trick fairly well.
I say give them a try. And if you can afford it, keep the other pair. It's always good to have an extra pair of hi-hats.
all depends on appliccation and oppinion. i wanna get some k zildjian (not k kustom) mastersound hihats. good for all applications and even though vinnie colaiuta helped make the a customs and as a matter of fact wanted them made to suit any number of purposes, i've never seen him use any hihats other than k mastersounds outside of advertisments for a customs. that's just me though. id say k custom if it's between the 2, but what do you play?
Well, the "Custom" name doesn't really mean that much, it is used in different ways. Z Customs were simply replacements of older Z Zildjians. A Customs are pretty much the Avedis line with lower profiles and narrower lathing (and of course brilliant finish).
K Customs, however, are way out there. It's Zildjian's line that's the closest to the likes of Bosphorus and Istanbul cymbals. The cymbals are very jazz-oriented, but you might find something that works for rock as well.
Thanks again! I play in a pop rock band, but in my spare time I play anything from jazz to latin to funk to hard rock. I've been looking at different brands for a good pair of versatile hi hats, and I think these are the best I've found so far. What do you think about the Zildjian A's and A Customs in comparison?
No problem. They're good, depending on what your personal taste is. Avedis and A Custom aren't complex like the Kerope line, so you get a simpler sound. Kerope hi-hats are very interesting sounding in person, and if you haven't had experience with Ks before, you might not like them at first.
I personally prefer Ks over As, but it all comes down to trying them in person and having somebody else play them so you can hear them from far away. Also, K/Zs are like K Mastersounds but higher in pitch.
To make it simple: A Zildjian--classic bright sound; A Custom--crisp and clean; K Zildjian--dark and warm. Choose whatever suits your personality. :-)
Anything, actually--from jazz to rock and even metal. These hats sound way more powerful in person, and they're very cutting (maybe not as cutting as Z Customs though).
Also, they're slightly more dry than on the video, and the stick definition isn't obvious when you're playing with a band, which is a good thing for hi-hats. And the chick is nice and clean, hence they're "Mastersounds". :-)
Really diggin' the sound.

I have a quick question. Which size hi hat cymbal size is better, 13'' or 14''?
MrCbolden 1 year ago
@MrCbolden It all depends on what you're looking for. I think the 14" is better for an all-purpose versatile hi-hat.

Hey i love your hi hat! I'm going to a buy a new zildjian hi hat... I usually play punk rock ska... Should i buy an A Custom or a K custom?

Grr stupid YouTube won't let me post a reply.

Thanks, glad you liked them! Search for the hi-hats you're interested on YouTube with the word memphisdrumshop. K Mastersounds and K/Zs are good.
I don't know, it's all preference. Ks and K Customs are complex, while A Customs are not. Listen and see if you like them. :-)

With that said, I have a K Custom ride, and it's pretty much my favorite cymbal in my set-up.

thanks heaps!!

they sound nice.
do u think these or a regular pair of k's would suit metal??
thats the only thing stopping me from gettin them.

Well, they're definitely raw, but they're dark. If you like the K sound but want something a bit higher in pitch, try the K/Zs.
I've heard of people using K Mastersounds for Metallica, so it's possible. It all depends on what sound you're looking for.
I think K Mastersounds would be better for metal than regular Ks though. They're cleaner and slightly heavier.
Hope this helps.

ho for the z custom mastersound sound different and higher in pich, k mastersound more indicated in my opinion for hard rock at last not metal
habit1979 2 years ago
Actually, Ks can work pretty well for metal.

Thanks! I've been looking for a demo video of these. What styles of music do you recommend them for?
