Human dignity wins over formality.
If he cheated on his wife and is supposed to be a good role model then he deserves the humility, it takes guts for a person to come out like that and confront their partner, but it was about honor and human dignity. Pretty bad timing that she found out then only 2 hours before. But it shows charactor to stand up like that and set things straight, even during an important event.
