  • are these what you call armchair pragmatists

  • Rorty has the speed to really be a great prophet. His imagination is wonderful. I love that his views are always towards the ruined monuments of a useful truth. He probably didn't have many years to live after this video was made, and I am happy and fortunate to have watched and profited from it. I like the ideas too which Davidson speaks about animals and the wide world. This is my second time to long after the hope which this video provides. To reduce poverty is good on both sides.

  • Great? Define great philosopher. I think Rorty in this section exemplifies Searle's criticism of those who reject the correspondence theory of truth. They just hate that we are "responsible", which seems a strange way to characterize it, to the way reality is. wouldn't it just be better to not be "responsible"? This is really just childish fantasy, which seems a better characterization than Romanticism.

  • ...not to forget about equally important practical and moral considerations such as: who pays who? and, since the other party is also a sex pro, does that entail a different treatmeant and a different course of action than when doing it with a regular person/customer? etc...

  • nothing more enjoyable than watching two dead guys, so overjoyed with being philosophers that they can't keep themselves off of each other--makes me think of a good porno full of horny and moany pornstars. and one has to wonder: if two prostitutes did it with each other, would they have a moaning contest? which in turn raises other serious questions like: does a prostitute moan for herself or for the other (i.e. the customer)? does she really feel pleasure or is she faking it? what is pleasure?.

  • I love watching thoughtfull, carefull, open and deliberative people who are experts on their subjects talking to each other. This video is pretty much the epitomy of that. Of course there is an extent to which it is all an insencere show, but what's wrong with that? Its like a sort of beautifull improvised theatre piece.

  • Excellent. Thanks for posting.

  • I would say the nature of reason is natural. I see mind can use cataloging, comparisons and relationships pre-verbally and build complex chains and networks of reason with the non-verbal language of 90% of the mind. The nature of reason otherwise is synthetic, or something like that. Reason is based on the processes found in nature? Someone said that science is just discoveries from nature. I hope the non-verbal sources of reason are looked into more and my thinking on the subject is of use.

  • Tis a truth perpetually for every poet of accident!

  • Their semi-personal interaction towards the end was very enjoyable. It's very pleasant to see two great minds interact. Thanks for the videos.

  • thank you so much for these videos... truly enlightening. It's especially unique to see an "interview" (better termed "discussion" as is the title of the video) where both parties can stand their ground while retaining an open curiosity towards the other's point of view, and to the "truth" pragmatically defined as something to be sought, found and refined in neverending dialogue.

  • This shows that Davidsons was far more open-minded than most analytic philosophers. Most of them have no idea of what Rorty was on about and just dismiss his views without understanding them.

  • Soon after the beginning of the first part of this video I made a wager with myself: Will Davidson EVER make a move with his left leg or right arm?

Here, somewhere in the middle of the last installment, I seem to have lost this wager on the arm part, but the leg still rests firmly in place ...

The whole conversation captures the flavour of Davidson's and Rorty's thinking quite well.

  • Excellent video. Thanks. I was a bit overwhelmed after reading radical interpretation but this video has clarified a lot of what I've read so far on Davidson.

  • Glad it was helpful.

  • props for this one...

  • Cheers.
