I love the gypsies at the renaissance! i remember one of the times when i was little some of the ones i met wanted me to belly dance with them, cause i had dressed as a gypsy that year. ;D they were so nice!
The renfest here is like the biggest in the US! in Magnolia, TX (about 40 minutes out of Houston) from the beginning of October through the end of November.
Wait!!!! there's a housten fest!!!?? I'm moving to houston very soon and was devistated because i could not find a ren fiare!!! I work at the one in KC right now and am so happy that there is one down in texas. where is it!?
well said Sumakuni. They disrespect our identity and cultural ways. We have our own proud identity and culture. We don't need some silly white western European women coming along with their fancy weekly evening dance clubs and putting on shows that has nothing to do with us and totally paints a picture of misrepresentation. Its like painting your face black and polishing shoes and calling it "black workers union".
More disrespectful gori (pale skin) gajiya (non-Romani women) doing their little evening dance group activities where they make up silly dances in scantily clad costumes that have absolutely nothing to do with Romani and they pretend to be "Gypsy". Oh how "ethnic" and exciting it must be for them. There husbands must be so proud of them (roll eyes)
With respect offerd (that was not offerd to us). You say you are not doing Rromani dance yet you take our spots at these fairs claming in every subtle way you are. We have heard well do the dances no one is stopping you but you and many others know , one can not get in once there is establishment and the people have been "fooled" to endear to your group, thinking you are us.
If you say it at the begining of your show or not makes no difference because in the heart; you know what I am saying, in the heart. I know you feel affinity for our culture but wow this is so not the way to show it.
If you did this as Native American or African, dancers, this would be fraud. You should truly honor the people but I will leave that up to the people, Creator and the good Karma to decide. I think this would have been wonderful had you truly undestood our road but you whom I thought would most, is second to least; with the exception of racist skin heads. It is my daughters and Neices nephews who should be doing these performances my love, not you.
Yep..Wortha, right on. Thats okay; when you dance life it can not be truly imitated, the people will eventually know the difference "no one" can fake. Tey beshes undo sastimous ty lashi baxtasa (even though I know they will try to steal this too/ so you remain in great fortune and happiness.
Hi ALL! Thanks for all of the comments. I am Soraya, the dancer in this clip. You are right, this is not a traditional gypsy piece. It is actually a latin fusion piece as I am originally from Colombia (it is mentioned in the intro before I dance). Alla, our other dancer does some traditional gypsy pieces in the show but overall we are a fusion of world music. The "feel" of our group, however, is gypsy inspired. Thanks for all of the comments, it's nice to know people's opinions. Dance on!
thats the english definition dear, a gypsy is an accepted slang for the romani ethnic minority so saying all gypsies are nomadic would just be a silly stereotype and misunderstanding. this dance is beautiful but definitely not a gyspy dance it's more egyptian than anything
This might not be "traditional" gypsy dance, but I could totally imagine a gypsy from a traveling caravan dancing like this! I am a Tribal Bellydancer and I say that this was a wonderfl dance!
Pay no attention to savygypsy... There is no ONE way to do a gypsy dance... 5 stars!
Oh Wow! My husband and I saw the Gypsy Dance theatre this last weekend at the Texas Renaissance Festival and they were wonderful, But I am extremely glad that this wasn't part of the show this year. My husband would've probably passed out. He hates snakes. I must say that this is really good though and she is very brave. Thank you for posting this. Otherwise I don't think I would have gotten to see it.

As A member of the ASPCA, I wish people would leave snakes in the wild. Trust me
they are not props or toys.

the girl can move her hips, but I kinda feel sorry for the snake... plus I thought gypsy dances were more elaborate?

1) belly dance. not gypsy.
2) most of that was just walking around with a snake.
it could have been good though.

I hate unskilled djembe players in belly dance. Belly dance isn't even meant to have djembes.
