@10laughungtears Thanks man :) I think the dislikes are because I transposed the riff up half a step by accident, and the camera flipped. Bit of a fail from me (one of my first vids), but people that understand it's all down a fret seem to find it educational :)
@Prostheta Hi, and thanks for the educational advice. However, i'd like to point out that I am actually a right handed player (check my other videos) and it was the software on my computer that flipped the image. However, again, i'd like to point out that left handed players do exist. Thankyou.
@Prostheta Eh, joke doesn't work as well cause you can see the E string on top. I have seen left handed players play with an upside down right handed bass, and a left player playing right handed though.
the first thing i learned from this song was this part. after that i heard the song and learned it. thanks for the vid. and you could be the bassist in metallica
@Chargeglass You see those HUGE letters at the start of the video, saying it's played at the 9th position, and not the tenth? I kinda figured that would give people a clue. I was wrong...
Seriously?!!? My favourite bass teacher teaching me my favourite song to play on bass?! This made my day! =D. I'm an intermediate player, but your understanding for beginner players is amazing!
do you have a left handed stingray as well as a right handed one? btw i love your videos you truely did help me more than i could ever thank you for, your inspiring
dude ur a fukin awsome teacher!! i picked that up straight away! iv always wanted to learn that song as i been a fan of metallica for ages, iv learnt the doodle thing off cunning stunts aswell whoooo thanks bro
you know just throwing this little excersice out there, but my fingers started bending all weird after holding this chord for a long time, so i incorperated some martial arts conditioning into bass playing. i sat around and did fingertip pushups (pushups on the tips of your fingers). its meant to streangthen your fingers for claw type techniques and eye gauging and thing like that, but the key is strengthen so i figured what the hey...
@Cougarman132 I know he's right. I know he's right because it clearly says, in HUGE letters on the video that it starts on the 9th fret. Hence why I thought it was a joke, pointing out the obvious...
@bassmaster9860 He does, yes. I wouldn't say I 'dislike' metallica, I just don't hold them as high as I used to when I was younger. Man, I used to love that band. But yea, those albums didn't help me losing interest. I still listen to master of puppets often :) Plus I saw them live twice!
@96MIAN I don't dislike them now, I just don't like them as much as I used to. St anger has good stuff on, but I think they peaked at Black. There was something great surrounding that album. I remember waiting in line to buy it the day it came out. I saw them live around that time as well, and it was just great. There was amazing stuff going on in the rock/metal scene, and they were a big part of that. St anger didn't have any magic for me. Plus, its mixed really badly...
i have been playing bass for a short time and i have learned so much from you! i watched your video on Sleep Melody Sleep and fell in love! i love playing slow, deep, heart felt songs like My friend of misery! The problem stands here! I can't find any other good songs with a nice slow bass that i can just play and close my eyes and just let my music take me away. so my question to you is, do you know of any songs that i could learn to play that are anything like what i am looking for?
lol. After you placed right handed on you other video, I was beginning to this that you were some kind of ambidextrous superhero. Great lession. Thanks
aaaaaaa lets strart aaaaaaaaaaaa the first time i aaaaaaaaaaa played bass aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa was aaaaaaaaa looooooooooooooll rofl good lesson m8:)
you've probably heard this many times and have your reasonings but is there any chance of you writing out these tabs? I'm finding it a little hard to get them down with these slightly more advanced videos (advanced for me, anyway)
I love your passion about the riff. I know what it´s like -this particular riff had me made the decision to play bass (know been playing for 3 years) :-)
I'm a guitar player myself, so excuse the ignorance, but Bass standard tuning is EADG isn't it? Same as the bottom 4 strings of a guitar... so power chords do work without crazy tunings... Could someone tell me how come I hardly ever hear any power chords on bass tracks (as I use bass tracks from websites to back up guitar playing)
I use them, but you have to be carefull. Sometimes, there can be "too much" bass. A powerchord on the bass can muddy the sound, if you haven't got your tonal settins right. You need a bit of high-end treble for them to ring out nice and clean...
@Dmanlamius76 Ya if you dont have enough treble on you really cant get power chords to sound right it just sounds like extreme bass disturbance and also...in my opinion..i think playing power chords for a normal bass line it kinda ruins the effect of a bass. but thats what i feel so.
To back up Dman, powerchords don't work so well in the lower registers of a bass. Steve Harris sometimes uses powerchords, but generally it's from the root notes on his A string. Now chords in the higher registers of a bass sound heavenly!
I believe it's because a lot of bands put bassists in a box and don't want them to get out. When I began bass a few years back, everyone told me it didn't matter what type of chord was being played in the progression because I was a bass player.
"It doesn't matter with bass."
When I began studying theory, I realized, yeah, it really does matter. Now I'm the one in the band asking, "Hey, what scale is this based on," and, "What type of chord?" Haha. I hate that box.
@p3rs0n42 alot of people are too scared, my favorite bass chords are hitting a note with the string above it open, i especially like playing on the g string with and open d and sometimes open a as well it sounds evil and apocalyptic.
The chords are called Five Chords. The first is F#5, then it goes into A5, less the top A (Not playable on a 4 string in a chord) Then it cuts into what I would expect is a Modified E Maj, Played with B as root, and E as high note, then into E5, less the Middle A.
5 Chords are also known as Power Chords, and near every metal song has them. The fact that Cliff Arpeggiated them here shows their versatility, while still keeping the song Metal. ,\nn/
thanks a lot! this has really helped me understand how chords work on the bass. is it frowned upon to play bass chords thumb style, the way you do, or does it tend to be pardoned seeing as you're playing chords? i was just wondering, because playing bass with a pick is generally frowned upon, but when it comes to chords, i feel like using your index and middle fingers tends to mute the string above the one you've just played, while your method lets all strings ring out at once...
Nothing should be frowned upon unless it's just a poor technique. You can apply any technique on bass that you want. From classical picking to thumbing, to whatever.
However, you can use your index and middle finger properly, just don't hit the string if it needs to ring, simple as that. You have to learn control. :)
For me, multiple techniques are used when playing chords.
Thanks very much! I've been trying to get a feel for bass chords for awhile, and it's great to be taught with my favorite song of all time. Good lesson!

Yea, thats why it says everywhere to play it one fret down. I even made it in capitals like: THIS IS PLAYED ON THE NINTH FRET, AND NOT THE TENTH AS I DO IN THIS VIDEO! JUST MOVE ALL I TEACH UP ONE FRET, but still, somehow, people still miss it...
I'm an uber noob to bass so this might sound dumb but... can't i use my ring finger to cover both the D and G on the 12th fret in the beginning? Do I HAVE to use my pinkie on the G? If so, why?
Yea, Scott you can use your ring finger is that's more comfortable to you. I'd recommend trying with the pinky, though as it gives you more options in the future. :)
lol fair enough who ever it was who replyed to it but it anoys me when americans say things wrong and make up words, for example asap, garage, depot, zebra, scone. all said by americans strangly and it always hits a nerve coz its as if americans don't want to learn the english language and don't respect it
But didin't our language come from a mix of Greek, German and Latin? Don't the French use a lot of words in their original form? It's us that's taken a language and changed it into something it never used to be. All the Americans are doing are adding to something we started. It doesn't really matter, because the internet is a form of communication that will constantly evolve. As long as we understand each other, everything is ok. I wouldn't get hung up on change...:)
you're right there however its just the fact i'm patriotic and i find alot of americans seem to take british inventions and stuff and then say they are theres, such as computers and the internet its self. And now they call enlgish american, that angers me
its funny how you bash our form English. American English is a VERY Diverse language, and i varies by region, and you can't say that its bad that we use words like "ASAP" to communicate faster. And to communicate easier with our peers, as for Garage, and Deopt, Zebra, Scone, Who the fuck cares, its not like i cant go to britain(and im british) and say i want to buy a Zebra and the wont understand me, so your points are fucking uselss u narrowminded fuckface
ok well i see i've touched a nerve there so i'll shut up about it, however perfering the proper form of english isint being narrowminded, then again the proper form of english would have been used in medievil times so i can't exactly say modern english is "proper", but i agree the american made words usedare pretty usefull like shortening "a-s-a-p" to "a-sap" however it frushtrates me that english is being labled american and how americans take out inventions and brandish them theres.
Mark my words my friends. This argument will achieve nothing, and go no-where. Can we stop it please, and just agree that MUSIC is one language that we all use and love?
What's with all the dislikes? This was good!

If so, why?

Cool! Thanks man! Watching you hold those notes really was a eye opener. I have been playing that riff all day. Very sweet tune!
scottrule1 2 years ago
By the way. Why do you use your pinky finger? Cant you just use the ring finger to hold both notes on that same fret?
scottrule1 2 years ago
it wont sound right. it'll sound kinda flat
liljj0909 2 years ago
Not true, it's like using a bar chord on the guitar.. I do it, it doesn't sound flat at all
Surfurplex 2 years ago
Yea, Scott you can use your ring finger is that's more comfortable to you. I'd recommend trying with the pinky, though as it gives you more options in the future. :)

lol fair enough who ever it was who replyed to it but it anoys me when americans say things wrong and make up words, for example asap, garage, depot, zebra, scone. all said by americans strangly and it always hits a nerve coz its as if americans don't want to learn the english language and don't respect it
Elltrixer 2 years ago
But didin't our language come from a mix of Greek, German and Latin? Don't the French use a lot of words in their original form? It's us that's taken a language and changed it into something it never used to be. All the Americans are doing are adding to something we started. It doesn't really matter, because the internet is a form of communication that will constantly evolve. As long as we understand each other, everything is ok. I wouldn't get hung up on change...:)
Dmanlamius76 2 years ago
you're right there however its just the fact i'm patriotic and i find alot of americans seem to take british inventions and stuff and then say they are theres, such as computers and the internet its self. And now they call enlgish american, that angers me
Elltrixer 2 years ago
its funny how you bash our form English. American English is a VERY Diverse language, and i varies by region, and you can't say that its bad that we use words like "ASAP" to communicate faster. And to communicate easier with our peers, as for Garage, and Deopt, Zebra, Scone, Who the fuck cares, its not like i cant go to britain(and im british) and say i want to buy a Zebra and the wont understand me, so your points are fucking uselss u narrowminded fuckface
bigdawgandrewm 2 years ago
ok well i see i've touched a nerve there so i'll shut up about it, however perfering the proper form of english isint being narrowminded, then again the proper form of english would have been used in medievil times so i can't exactly say modern english is "proper", but i agree the american made words usedare pretty usefull like shortening "a-s-a-p" to "a-sap" however it frushtrates me that english is being labled american and how americans take out inventions and brandish them theres.

Mark my words my friends. This argument will achieve nothing, and go no-where. Can we stop it please, and just agree that MUSIC is one language that we all use and love?
