  • Save Antonio Carlos Jobim, the best musian of our time and the writer of this song. Save Tom, save Brazil, Eu sou brasileiro, com muito orgulhoo....

  • and dont forget yall that Earl Palmer is on drums....(let me save you the time)...the same guy who played on David Axelrod's best stuff.

  • @joshua626 Earl Palmer is a legend!

  • One of my favorite vocalisits.

  • WOWWWWWW. THE BEST VERSION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a great version, no doubt!

I'll still go with the Getz/Gilbero version as the definitive version and my favorite version, but this Lou Rawls version is fantastic. :)

  • Wonderful!

  • bossa nova , with a twist of soul , do it lou , my favorite jazz version ...thank you marco

  • Best singin voice of all time. Dam, I wish u were still here bro!(sad, very very sad.)

  • the greatest version ever . . . no argument accepted . . . definitive !!!

  • He did a good job of translating this song. I never knew what this song was about.

  • You can do a hotter version of a song than Lou Rawls. Just don't try to be cooler. Can't be done.

  • Absolutely beautiful! I'm going to pull out my Lou Rawls music. Beautiful voice, love this version just makes me want to smile, and go some where warm and sunny. What a talent.

  • Ashamed to say but I didn’t know the dude, what a talent, what a voice.

  • @ArieTemmes I am as ashamed as you, did he not break through in Europe? And now this fantastic singer passed away already?? Shame on us.

  • My favourite version

  • One word and that word is "AMAZING"!

  • Swing baby swing! Swing is the thing!

  • felt like Aretha was gonna answer...some where !

  • I just love the way Lou sings the word "swings" at 0:37. It really does swing!!

  • HOW ON EARTH SMBY CAN'T LIKE THIS??? share awesomeness

  • That was awesome!

It's such a shame that Rawls isn't better known. He was one of Sinatra's favorites, you'd think that would count for something.

  • all time classic .......... one of my all time favourite versions

    Al

  • I absolutely LOVE his version. It was my husband and I's song back in the 70's. Thanks for the memories!

  • It's a tribute to Rio de Janeiro truly honor

  • my fave version is of course is the original but when i heard this it's just as good. What a great great version. Cool charming voice too

  • Well Done. A different take on a classic...

  • This is smooth...

  • LOL @ :40. That is SO not Lou. Hehe.

  • My favorite jazz song ever

  • love the bluesy-ness of this..

  • I saw lou when I was 18 singing this in the club harlem back in 1966, atlantic city nj umm had big fun that night playing like i was 21yrs old in a club. lol thanks for the memories

  • Thanks for this post. Lou Rawls had a very distinctive voice and this is another great song. I really enjoyed listening to it.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!

  • Outstanding! a great version by the great Lou Rawls, they don't make them like this any more. Such class, Such a voice. BRAVO!

  • TOP VERSION OF THE SONG !

  • First time I've heard this and within 30 seconds, I love it

  • so far....Lou Rawls version is the best for me.....it has a unique taste that no other artist can do......such a pity he is gone!

  • BADASS.

  • this is the best version that i ever heard

  • the best version i ever heard....so cool and very very elegant to hear it!

  • so cool.....amazing!

  • The voice...ohh wee, the voice.

  • to bad he never ran for president. obama dont got shit on this cat

  • Totally Cool.

  • A legendary male singer -with a real male voice.

  • A legendary male singer --with a male voice, not screeching falsetto.

  • That's the late great hall of fame drummer from New Orleans, Earl Palmer on drums folks! He did it all....from all of Little Richard's ground-breaking rock and roll hits, Dizzy Gillespie's modern jazz, Lou Rawls, Nelson Riddle - hell, he's the drummer on the score for the Sinatra film, "Robin and the Seven Hoods." Listen to his performance here.....its a master lesson. Listen to how twice he literally "lifts" Lou into the bridge. This is solid stuff folks...

  • There's really thumbs down to this?!

    Booo you!

  • Madalena

Continuando nas vozes do jazz, não sei se conheces esta; sendo a música mais que conhecida (joão Gilberto)

  • what a cover!!

    LOVE IT!!!!

  • I love this version as well. This version is easy to dance to. So great.

  • you are great Lou....

you can do better than this...Anyway you are great!!!

    Thanks Lou!!!!!!

  • I like how they swing the clave!

  • I love it. Thanks for posting it!

  • Love this version! Lou Rawls is outstanding on this.

  • The worst version I have ever heard of this song.

  • @Barry3443 Sorry, I don't agree with you. I thought the thumbs up was for the song, not your comment.

As a singer I enjoy a verity of arrangements of the jazz standards. This is different from most and that's what makes it special. If you listen to all the versions of this song, on You Tube and then listen to this again, you might change your mind.

  • Wow..Lou Rawls is the best!

  • My favourite version. Thanks for the post.

  • Love this...thank you for sharing..:)

  • Great Lou... great voice... I´m proud for this interpretation of Girl from Ipanema... I´m from Brazil.....

  • wow. He tears this up! This man is a badass jazz musician.

  • @uninoculated and you know what, he is a badass jazz musician too!

  • Sooooth man. Sweet tune.

  • this sounds kinda cheesy especially from 3:00---

  • You're nuts, this is what a soulful groove is all about....

Soulful = Full of or expressing deep feeling; profoundly emotional....

  • i agree with u very good job Lou did

  • I love this version. Cool, hip, swing. Miss you bro!!

  • I like this version although Rawls does it less in the Bosa Nova style. Of the couple of Sinatra versions I prefer the Sinatra version in which he sings it with Jobim (more straight Bosa Nova). I can't imagine Lou Rawls doing straight Bosa Nova so this is good he fit the song to his style better.

  • Simply put, amazing.

  • BAM. Now that's the stuff. SWEET.

  • Ohhh Mannnnn!!! What a groove. Swing is THE thing.

  • Lou, you'll never die while we keep listening to you.

  • Ah-man-aaannnn!

That was my sho'nuf jam - used to play the entire album repeatedly - owned about 5 copies. That's how many I wore out. Thanks for posting. The video is great - love the pics of Lou Lou and SA.

  • El maestro Lou... GENIAL... como siempre.

The master Lou.... outstandiang as always

  • Great song - Great Place to Vacation: Ipanema Beach!!!!

  • WOW he sounds so charming

  • What a voice !

    Clear and Strong, but smooth.

Make you fell like a Rendezvous

    Hmm !

    Love,

    T

  • Love the way he does this, Different from all the other versions I have heard. Thanks for posting this. What a real shame we dont have him around anymore. He was brilliant.Class personified.

  • Did Lou introduce this as a man named Gilberto? That is too funny.

  • No! He was saying that Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto's version had introduced the tune to him.

  • @leesterg

I just listened to it again and he explicitly said Stan Getz and "a man named Gilberto I believe it was". Astrud Gilberto was not even close to being a man.

  • 昔 リオで聞いたホテルの雰囲気。 気持ち良くなります。

  • yeah buddy!!!! Nobody could bend a note like Lou

  • The second best vertion of this song

in my opinion is from Mr Nat King Cole

  • wheres the great ending , the great beginning SAD !!

  • He was so smooth! Aahhhh....

  • Great adaptation! Very catchy.

  • tom jobim e joao gilberto

  • who's the original singer?

  • adrblecutie47: Astrud Gilberto made it a hit.

  • It misses the outro ! Thanks from meine hertz and I loved this man !

  • Amaizing. Great voice...

Lou god bless you for all great moments you gave us

  • Love how he plays with his voice. Love it!

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful version, from start to finish!

Picked up on the "Look at me" Johnny Mathis Misty ending too.

Clever and up tempo fun take on a classic.

    wonderfull

    Claudio Mattos from Brazil

  • Amazing!Love it!

  • Bravo! outstanding! amazing!

  • Very nice!

  • THEY TORE THIS SONG A NEW ASS

  • ".......because she's wearin' one of them real cute bikini bathing suits and it sure does look good to me....."

It's a sort of 'perved up' version of Astrud Gilberto's original!

    I LOVE IT!!!!

And I love the final musical phrase, quoting the first line of 'Misty' : "look-at-me"

  • Astrud Gilberto's original????

    Her father's original, please!

  • My apologies Ma'am,

    "João" right you are!

    ;-)

P.S. I still love the song.

  • :))) Yep, me too.

  • JUST SEXY

  • Viva o Brasil!

  • I thought Getz & Gilberto's was the best for several years---then I heard this song---a few months later I had this song played at our wedding, today is our 1 year Anniversary! I listen to this song about 10x a week, thanks Lou and thanks for posting this.

  • You're welcome. :)

I've always loved the Getz & Gilberto version just like you. Then i came across this and fell in love with it too. It's one of those rare cases where a cover is in the same league as the original.

  • Sing It Lou!! Best Version In My Humble Opinion! Viva Rio De Janeiro,Brazil!!

  • THIS is the best version of the song.

  • I'm w/ya on that! Lou's is smooth as hell!

  • WOW! I thought my favorite version of this song was Gilberto's, but Lou's is right up in there! Thx for posting this!!! Nothing like Bossa Nova !!!!

  • Although Brazil has terrible things as violence, poverty and corruption, there are good things in Brazil, as our talent in football, our way of being happy, our hospitality to foreigners and especially our rich and diverse musical talent.

  • Ive just sussed this one out, swinging like a gate. Hes almost got me forgetting its a bossa.

  • Lou Rawls is greatly missed. He had a special talent very rare.

  • RIP lou rawls

  • Ipanema = fvery amous beach in Rio de Janeiro City i ( Brazil ).

  • Lou is a master, no doubt about it.

    Thanks 4 posting this masterpiece!!

By the way, can anyone find out which album does this song belong to?

  • This song is featured on the great "Lou Rawls Live" album, recorded in Chicago in the early 60's. The whole album is a jazz lovers classic.

  • Thank you so much.

    Now, May the search begin!!

    Regards from Peru.

  • You are so welcome. Several videos from this great album are posted, including his priceless renditions of "St. James Infirmary" & "Tobacco Road".

  • Muy bueno...I´ve got a son who actually can give those low frequencies...I´ll keep you updated..ha, ha, ha...

  • thank you

  • !VIVA! Brasil

  • I love his version and the Astrid Gilberto version but Lou Rawls brings a whole different atmosphere to the song. When I hear this version I can just imagine a whole bunch of dudes perving all the chicks as they walk to the sea! "...wearin' one of those real cute bikini bathing suits and it sure does look good to me ...."

  • Is it just me, or was he singing about Eliane Elias(lol)?

  • Thanks marco27c1... this version is simply outstanding... I´ve never hear this song with Lou... this voice is of collection

  • Ah, one of my favorites!

I've always wondered what it would've sounded like if he and Nancy Wilson sang a duet.

  • Nice Song(smile)!

  • i love this song

  • This guy was'nt just a good signer he was a good preformer. I wasnt around in those days but just by watching I can see he was not one of those coroprate mass produce artist. You know what i mean. Some musician are just made by ecutives and some are just born.

  • I truly miss Lou!

  • a good version congratulation Lou

  • Lou is a fantastic singer! Great video too! John
