im embarrased for carlos santana..it was definitely a publicity move for GB to play with him...i hate when great players have to to average ones just because people with low iq's and shitty taste cant recognize true musicianship. this is like when herbie hancock played with tre anastasio of phish. some popular sophmoric pea brain gets his ass kissed by a bona fide genius because records need to sell. gay. the 5 who didn't like it get props

This is just classic! Two of thet greatest guitarists ever. (My other favorites are Mclaughlin, Jeff Beck, Wes Montgomery, Hendrix, and a few others who I can't bring to mind). I'm so glad this was posted. Thank you.
Fantastic...Santana sounded like John Mclaughlin at one point :) everyone was listening to him including Benson. These 2 could not ignore the artistry and uniqueness of each others playing and recordings back then!lol!.it would be GREAT if they did a colaboration CD today!...like the Benson/Klugh and Benson/Al Jarreau collaboration, it would be awesome! .I didnt know the guitarist Gabor Szabo actually wrote this tune...another very unique guitarist-I remember listening to him back in the day.
LA COMBINACIÓN DE TOCAR LA GUITARRA BAJO DOS ESTILOS DIFERENTRES PRODUJO UNA ARMONÍA EXQUISITA DE SONIDOS GRACIAS A LA INFLUENCIA JAZZISTICA NORTEAMERICANA DE PARTE GEORGE BENSON Y LA CADENCIA SABROSA DE LATINOAMERICA CARLOS SANTANA EN ESTE TRACK: " MIDNIGHT SPECIAL"...SALUDOS DESDE MARACAIBO VENEZUELA...PERIODISTA & ABOGADO RICARDO PÉREZ
@rezarito, Both Carlos Santana and George Benson have two different stlyes! They're both one of a kind with there own individual styles! This performance by Carlos Santana and George Benson was not intended to be a competition! They both have class, and appreciate one anothers stlye!
Kinda would have been nice if George had also given props to the late, great Hungarian jazz guitarist, Gabor Szabo, who originally wrote this song. youtube it - it's awesome too!
'Anytime' I hear this it is special. Two greats playing this amazing piece of music - always takes my back to Miami, late 70's, skipping like a stone across Biscayne Bay with my friends while George Benson's music filled the air on the boat stereo, in the car, and in the clubs - turn it all the way up! So Sweet!!

That was the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed on/off screen....I was so moved with emotion, carried along the intertwined notes that constitute the chorus itself, and variants of it, combined with the chords and I felt like my soul had been awakened to something immaculately beautiful without flaws in a state of perpetual happiness...I've never yearned to buy an acoustic guitar and just jam to this all day long with my closest friends on a seemingly endless hot summer day.....ahhh :)
aww man I've always wondered what this number was called and SURE ENOUGH it comes up on the suggested videos and I had a hunch this was the one I was looking for!
breezin is probably Benson's most popular yet simple recordings.... i'm a benson fan until i die but i actually hate this song... the whole breezin album is just OK to me.. now put on some bad benson, new boss guitar, or live at Carnegie Hall and you'll hear/see some smashmouth jazz not smooth jazz junk
and i almost pissed myself watching santana's facial expressions! HILARIOUS
Body Talk is Vintage Benson as well. I STILL can't play some of the licks on "Plum" after all these years. Maybe if I listened to Jazz instead of Jimi Hendrix and Jimi Page when I started playing, it wouldn't be so hard to play. I never knew why my high school music teachers ragged the shit out of Rock (Rap and Hip-Hop wasn't around back then lol), but now I'm starting to see why.
Huh, it might just be me, but Carlos didn't really seem to be in his element in that session. I don't think his ideas connected as well as they usually do. Still I thought it was nice (I liked Benson's shredding at the end).
Who needs 3-chord rock and roll when you've got 2-chord jazz?
I have yet to hear a good version of this repetitive tune... not Benson's, not Szabo's, not Womack's original...
And bringing on Santana, who was a much bigger name than Benson when this aired, was good strategic marketing for Benson, but what a lot of pointless noodling.
@tuxguys don't fool yourself or try and fool others! rock will never be equal to jazz on any level because it is derived from blues which is derived from jazz! IDIOT!
@kalpal67 "don't fool yourself or try and fool others!"
--Beg pardon? "rock will never be equal to jazz on any level"
--Reread my comment, windbag, it's called "irony." " because it is derived from blues which is derived from jazz!"
--Check your musical history: You've gotten it exactly backward.
" IDIOT!"
--Come to my office in the Guitar Dept. at Berklee, and say that... and be sure to smile, so that I know you've seen the error of your ways. Now go, and embarrass yourself no more.
@tuxguys "Who needs 3-chord rock and roll when you've got 2-chord jazz?"
The thing you failed to point out, is that Rock is STUCK with the same 3-chords - Jazz is not. Also, the things that happen in a 2-chord Jazz song are 10-times more complex than a Rock song with twice as many chords = case closed.
Two greats on guitar classic two of my idols the reason I play guitar is because of George Benson and Carlos Santana and Curtis Mayfield and Rick James and Prince.

They call it "smooth jazz," but in the 70's and 80's, they knew how to write a tune. And don't forget about improv, especialy here.
