@DUBtheTIGER First, "five-star matches" as not about my own evaluation of wrestling. I think most people respect what Dave Meltzer says about wrestling. I can name plenty of Samoa Joe matches that are better than many of the HBK matches you mentioned, but it's clear that you don't respect the guy at all or acknowledge his skills. I think Samoa Joe is a tremendous wrestler, and I'm not going to waste my time defending him against someone who thinks he has no redeeming qualities.

And then when Shawn won, all the emotion, the crowd involvement, his big return. It had storytelling, ring psychology, dangerous spots, great wrestling...everything

@DUBtheTIGER Honestly, I don't remember that HBK/HHH match being that great, so I would have to re-watch it. Also, it seems that we just view wrestling differently: where you see psychology with HBK, I see unnecessary melodrama and over-selling (and that doesn't even count the "why" of his moves). But that's me. I think that the Samoa Joe/AJ Styles match from Turning Point 2005 has amazing psychology, and I think his ROH match with Kobashi has one of the hottest crowds I've ever seen.
Joe's look is unique only because today, everyone is a Randy Orton cookie cutter clone. 20 years ago there was more variety and Joe wouldn't stand out much. The problem is, his size isn't played up. So instead he just winds up looking like a guy that's 30 lbs overweight. Plus his gear looks really beat up and cheap, like every other indy guy wrestling in high school gyms. He could go more "prototype" indy guy just with a new ring jacket or tights (think Jimmy Snuka or The Islanders).

The problem with Joe - and I admit good booking can get around this - is he really is all internet hype. He looks like every other indy guy, except more out of shape, and his promos are nothing special. I remember his feud with Steiner, where they cut dueling pre-taped promos, and Steiner's insanity and bragging blew Joe's generic "I'm a WAR machine Scotty!!! I'll stretch ya!!!" promo. His big putdown was calling him "Scotty", I guess.
I'm not a fan of Joe and I think he's just another Internet Darling. But I do think TNA is mishandling him. Clearly they see some use for him in that they try to book something for him. But the fact that they seem to just reboot the guy every few months or have him booked strong but then have him either job or disappear soon after, is mind boggling. The fact they want a proto-(stereo-)typical Samon is nuts. What do they want him to do, eat live chickens and go "ooga-booga"?

Joe is great and very talented. I'm a Samoa Joe fan. HOWEVER if Joe want to put all the blame on TNA about the nation of violence gimmick here is the thing. The nation of violence wasn't the best idea or could have been tweeked a bit. BUT Joe could also do his home work and not gain more weight during his time off before the gimmick. He's in a very good shape right now and he improved a lot. But I'm talking about back then. Atleast Give TNA credit for investing time and money on Joe.
Joe does need to lose some weight. He's nowhere his championship form in 03 to 05. But give credit to TNA by just keeping him around as dead weight. literally.
TNA releasing him would probably make him happy. It's not like Joe is going to be unemployed for long if they release him. TNA contrary to what people think aren't that big. Joe can always work in ROH again, go to japan and get a good pay wrestling there even if WWE don't want him.

Even though Joe doesn't have the best look in the world I still say he's a hell of an attraction and must see wrestler. His look is so opposite of what people expect from wrestlers these days that when you see how quick, agile, technical and still powerful he is you cant help but be impressed
heard alot about him on the net for years. i'm more than willing to overlook a guys physique when it comes to talent. however, the few times i have seen him, he's nothing special, can't imagine him as being a credible fighter in the least and his ring work is good but nothing special at all. smaller more talented guys make him look better than he is in my opinion. working guys of his own size or larger he shows he's not up to snuff.

The reason he carried ROH for so long was because he simply looked like an average fat guy but in about 5 second of in ring work, he just went through them. I confess to not having watched TNA in ages, but i do remember when he first came in and was put over as this guy who could go through anyone and people believed it because they watched his work and easily got over the image.

@DUBtheTIGER First, "five-star matches" as not about my own evaluation of wrestling. I think most people respect what Dave Meltzer says about wrestling. I can name plenty of Samoa Joe matches that are better than many of the HBK matches you mentioned, but it's clear that you don't respect the guy at all or acknowledge his skills. I think Samoa Joe is a tremendous wrestler, and I'm not going to waste my time defending him against someone who thinks he has no redeeming qualities.

Plus, the two had history and the storyline was so good, so personal that something as little as Triple H saying "suck it" to Shawn added to the match. And then when Shawn won, all the emotion, the crowd involvement, his big return. It had storytelling, ring psychology, dangerous spots, great wrestling...everything

@DUBtheTIGER Honestly, I don't remember that HBK/HHH match being that great, so I would have to re-watch it. Also, it seems that we just view wrestling differently: where you see psychology with HBK, I see unnecessary melodrama and over-selling (and that doesn't even count the "why" of his moves). But that's me. I think that the Samoa Joe/AJ Styles match from Turning Point 2005 has amazing psychology, and I think his ROH match with Kobashi has one of the hottest crowds I've ever seen.

Joe's look is unique only because today, everyone is a Randy Orton cookie cutter clone. 20 years ago there was more variety and Joe wouldn't stand out much. The problem is, his size isn't played up. So instead he just winds up looking like a guy that's 30 lbs overweight. Plus his gear looks really beat up and cheap, like every other indy guy wrestling in high school gyms. He could go more "prototype" indy guy just with a new ring jacket or tights (think Jimmy Snuka or The Islanders).

The problem with Joe - and I admit good booking can get around this - is he really is all internet hype. He looks like every other indy guy, except more out of shape, and his promos are nothing special. I remember his feud with Steiner, where they cut dueling pre-taped promos, and Steiner's insanity and bragging blew Joe's generic "I'm a WAR machine Scotty!!! I'll stretch ya!!!" promo. His big putdown was calling him "Scotty", I guess.

The nation of violence wasn't the best idea or could have been tweeked a bit. BUT Joe could also do his home work and not gain more weight during his time off before the gimmick. There's something to be said about a guy with such a below average physique being so dominant. Plus, he's phenomenal on the mic. If they let him, his personality will give him a following.

@TVTraX I agree with you. He does not have a WWE-esque marketable look and never has. Some guys are meant to be big fishes in small ponds instead of small fishes in big ponds. Somoa Joe and AJ Styles are meant to be top guys in TNA and nowhere else

@TVTraX He needs to do something to become a big star in the industry? It's fairly stupid on your part to say he isn't already, everyone and their mother (who's into wrestling) knows who Samoa Joe is... Funny too seeing as he did this all while being a fat guy with an Elvis haircut wearing biker shorts whom never stepped foot in the WWE... Whether or not people appreciate him or whether he worked for WWE is irrelevant, he is well known effectively making him a "big star" as you would put it...

@TVTraX I think you're wrong about Joe's weight, because he's in good shape for his size, and it's the fact that he's a big man that can move like a crusierwieght that sets him apart from everyone else. Now, you might have a point about his look (thought I would go as far as to say they'd laugh at him) he doesn't really look likem anything special when you first see him. But when you get down to it the guy is a monster in the ring, and should be a bigger star thah he is.

@TVTraX Who cares what non fans or mainstream fans think about a guy on first sight? Wrestling is too full of random body builders that can't wrestle worth a shit. Most new fans can't tell any of them apart I'd rather Samoa Joe look like Shinya Hashimoto instead of becoming random CAW #215. Cleaning up a little would be cool but a total change is not. He should spruce, get sleek gear but not get turned into a random CAW.

@TVTraX On the contrary, if it was good enough for Dusty Rhodes its good enough for Joe. The reason he carried ROH for so long was because he simply looked like an average fat guy but in about 5 second of in ring work, he just went through them. I confess to not having watched TNA in ages, but i do remember when he first came in and was put over as this guy who could go through anyone and people believed it because they watched his work and easily got over the image.
