  • Thnx for the gr8 tutorial

  • that's amazing. i take a photoshop class at school, this will help a lot. thanks so much for this tutorial.

some say its easier to just download a lightning brush set.....but on a computer that you're not allowed to download things to it helps to know how to make your own lighting. also, most of the good brush sets cost money.

  • Hi yrahcaz411,

That's very true! Glad you found it useful

    Matt

  • very nice

videos are best when trying to get these kinds of photoshop hints down

  • Glad you like the videos, I have over 15 hours back at the 3photoshop website!

    Matt

  • u could just take a picute off of goodgle wiht a balc back ground and then do the bled/screen thing u can have a epic lighting bolt with many feelers and it will delte the dark background lol

  • thnks man!

  • use the gradient then press control I then control L alot easier

  • thanx

  • thanx

  • thanks, i never knew about screen! i thought i had to make them all like a render by outlining!

  • ohh and PS the size of the image you create the effect in dictates the complexity of the branching and weaving

  • I followed the principles of this method for part of my art recently, it was spectacular, nice video.

  • good tut. you should do shoutcasting for soccer lol =P

  • MINE WONT INVERT

  • Make sure the layer is both visible AND selected, than press ctrl + I "i".

  • RLY nice! Looks real!

  • This is an epic effect. It looks photo-realistic and not just like a cheesy oh-so-obviously-pasted lightning bolt. Great job!

  • ty man thts awesome

  • I can watch all videos from youtube for photoshop, but god damn, this is the best one :D thanks a lot!

  • Thanks, tall praise indeed

  • very nice one... very helpful

  • Very good and useful video!

  • Dude!

    You are freaking AWESOME!

Thanks for the massive help =D

  • . . . Too helpful.

Greetings from a Sooner fan in Dallas, TX. You have no idea in how amazingly helpful this vid of yours was, sir.

Thanks alot. 5/5 doesn't seem enough to give this vid its due. . . discounting the blurry camlink of course, heheh.

  • Thanks dude!

Yeah I've sorted the quality settings out since I recorded it haha.

    Thanks again

  • ur cam recorder is bad...anyway,really good video!

  • thank you!!!!!!!

  • can this be used on cs4?

  • is there a big difference between cs2 and cs3

  • Not for this tutorial. Works exactly the same!

  • to make more lightning at a time click clouds the click diffrence clouds it works much better

  • thank you so much if you read this PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER VIDEO PLEASE

  • Thanks, plenty more available for free at the 3photoshop website!

  • I don't have the option to press screen there are no boxes on the right. What do I do?

  • Cool -- but I don't get that same effect when I get to the "render difference cloud" filter. Mine is not really a lightning looking line but rather a scattered a puffy like a cloud going downward. I have the gradient tool set to linear. What else could be wrong?

  • after difference clouds go to levels and adjust.

  • Wow, that really does look real! Thank you for posting this!

And I love your accent, haha. x3

  • Thanks

  • cool tutorial man very helpful

  • Thank you

  • fail

  • ooooooh, good video, but do you or anyone else on youtube know how to take something (ex lightening) and put it so it looks like a reflection in an eye?

  • Thanks for this

  • I love your accent.

  • British ;)

  • Spot on!

  • Thanks :o)

I live near Cambridge in England!

  • how did u get that yellow circle around your mouse?

  • It's an option in the screen capturing software I was using. I only had it turned on for the first few videos I created, once I was able to improve the capture and render quality it was no longer necessary!

  • douche.....

    1) Control Panel

    2) mouse options

Figure the rest out from there

  • ty 5/5

  • thank you very much, mate

  • nice but where do you get adobe

  • Google it. Tyoe in Adobe Photoshop CS4 and you should be able to download a free 30 day trial of it

  • thnx

this is the best lightning tutorial

  • Thanks, I'm glad you think so!

  • or you can just download adobe photoshop portable free

  • great

  • very helpful dude

  • your awesome :) this helped me lawts!

  • No probs, glad it helped

  • Why dont he use load selection in the first place,so he dont have to take away the black after?..dont make sense

  • Dude, thanks a million, your tutorial is totally friggin awsome, especially for your first one. I understood everything, thx again

  • Thanks, yeah this was the very first tutorial I ever recorded. Amazing to think it was over 2 years ago, and that I have since recorder over 15 hours of free videos at the 3photoshop website. Memories!

  • thanks bro irealy understand it thanksss

  • I already knew how to do this... as I was watching your video I was saying each next step to myself before you said it to see if you were doing it right... and you hit it right on point GREAT JOB BRO! only thing I can suggest is when making a tutorial movie make it either in HD or HQ... so therefore your audience can view the exact pixel and canvas size... LOOKIN FORWARD TO MORE :)

  • Thanks, I appreciate your comment. On the quality side, this was the first tutorial I ever created, and as you can see/hear, I didn't really have much experience with screen capture software or compressing it a reliable format to send to the web! Two years later and I'm almost ha[[y with the quality I'm outputting now!

  • omfg!!!!!!!!!!!! dude that was freeikking perfectly awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!aahh!!!

dude seriosly i think out of all the photoshop vids, and i mean ALL the vids, u one is the easiest to understand!!

  • Wow, that's very kind of you to say - thanks!!

  • Awsome Vids Man and ur website is fantastic :D

  • Thank you!

    Kind of you to say!

    Matt

  • your awsome! aah!

  • good effect.

  • thanks

  • Damn, lightning struck in a photoshop ^^

  • wooouuuuuuuu!!!!!!!

    you are berry good..

  • that was a great help thanks

  • my invert button is locked, how do i unlock it?

  • awsome thanks!

  • for adobe photoshop cs2 to 4

to do the lightening at background u just need to open a new layer at the background there... n then just use gradient tools as u all noe then do all adjustment edi.. then like we do contact lens or hair colour we need to change the colour to soft light izit but we do lightening we change to screen then ok lo... so not need to copy n paste coz for cs2 n above is cannot do that so open a new layer...

  • How do i scale down a copied image? xD

  • Try pressing CTRL T with the copied image selected.

    Hope that helps

  • Found out that you can go image->scale, but its great to know the shortcut, thanks alot =D

Great tutorial, used it for a picture in a school project, worked perfectly =D

  • You're welcome. Thanks for saying!

  • i can still see the blocks behind the gradient. how do i get rid of these?

  • Make sure the blending of the gradient is set to normal and the oppacity is 100%

    Hope that helps

  • Comment removed

  • nice looks cool but seems alot of work to just add something in the bacground lol

  • Hey dude, What program did you use to record this?... I found lot of programs kinda this but that video wont be even cool like this...

  • Hey there,

I used Camtasia V2 (quite an old version). If you're looking for something free then try Camstudio.

    Good luck!

  • Uhm, But its lagging me... Wha should i do to fix that lags?

  • if its in uta u dont have to make fake lighn

  • Thank you soo much, looks really realistic!

  • great one

  • great tutorial. very usefull

  • amazinggg!

  • Excellent. Thank you very much.

  • how do u enlarge it or shrink it...u skipped that step

  • CTRL T to enter the transform mode. Then just drag the cornerpoints of the bounding box to resize.

  • nice

  • What kind of english do you speak? Where are you from? It's a nice accent^^

  • Australia, I believe.

  • Thanks. I'm in the UK, about 60 miles from London.

  • yay. thats nice. the idea with the cloud is very usefull

  • Great

  • awesome!

  • Thank you very very much

  • really helpfull

    thanks :)

  • thanks

  • thanks man

  • thank you, it helped alot

  • you're the best thankn you

  • the gradient tool crashes my photoshop.

  • nvm about the crashing problem it doesn't let me select render however.

  • Why's that? Is it faded out?

  • yes. I used your way, but i kinda worked around that step. instead of opening a new document, i opened a new layer and changed the blend mode to screen (after I did the difference clouds and the invert colors). buy yes it is faded out.

  • If it's faded check that you're in an RGB 8 b/p/c document.

    Hope that helps

  • Great tut!! :D thanks alot :)

  • i learn something again thanks..

  • No probs, thanks!

  • you absolute legend, by far the easiest to follow tutorial on youtube, well done man
