Travolta played this character brilliantly. Somebody who was a van wastell womaniser that came from the tough streets of 70s New York. I remember one film critic compared it Scorsese's 'Mean Streets with frills and disco dancing. Mind you I heard somewhere that the Bee Gees didn't like the film that their music accompanied.
You know what's so amazing about SNF. It's still as relevant today as it was yesterday. Going out, partying, dancing your blues away, just enjoying your life and getting away from your problems. I will say one thing, I lioved the scene where The Faces (Joey & Double J) actually stand up to Tony for once in their lives and tell him "You're no better than us even though you think you are!" If Bobby C., hadn't died I don't think they would have hung out with Tony anymore.
95% of teens these days listen to the same formulaic, crappy pop over and over again. If you′re one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy and paste it to at least five videos. Don′t let the spirit of rock and roll die
It is not an unusually long trailer. Trailers are not TV ads (30 seconds). Trailers are shown before movies in theaters (usually about 3 minutes long). Have any of you who think it is too long been to a movie theater lately?
What the hell is a git? I don't have to champion the classics I grew up with. The very fact that people talk about them 35 and 40 years later says it all.
this was my role model, i wanted to look, dance score with the girls and be popular like this guy was , a million can of aquante can testify to this im not lying
What's the song from 0:25 to 0:35. It's nearly faded into the background but you can still kind of make it out. I want to know the name of the song I just can't get it out of my goddamn mind! Help me! xD
Saw this movie more than 60 times!! Came out when I was 13 ,,, worked in the 2001 Odyssey on Saturday afternoons,,,serving soda. Filmed it down the block from my house,, Know it backward and forward
One of the most important films of the 1970's, Saturday Night Fever influenced many people not only by the dancing, music and disco fashion, but also how bad you can screw up your life and go nowhere. None the less, excellent movie! 5 stars outta 5!
@John22133 - Yeah I can see how the 60's were horrible. Civil rights legislation, the Women's Movement, the United Farm Workers, protests that led to the end of the Vietnam war, the Environmental Movement. Rock'n'Roll. It was awful. Unless you happened to be one of the 95% of Americans who wasn't rich, white and male.
@sarahelizabethasher Yep, I agree. Race riots, war protests, burning buildings and cars, riot squads using firehoses on crowds, multiple assassinations, hippies and drug abuse...yep, I agree..a wonderful time. It was the end of innocence for this country.
@STR4WB3RRI3S Yeah, I was 15 when this movie came out in 1977, a freshman in high school. I wish I could convey to you what a HUGE hit this movie was, and how it affected the way people partied, dressed, danced. It was a cultural phenomenon! ALL guys wanted to dance like Travolta, all girls wanted a guy like that. He was already a star and hearthrob on a weekly TV series called "Welcome Back, Kotter." After this movie came out, he shot to international stardom like you wouldnt believe.
@STR4WB3RRI3S EVERYBODY wanted to dance. This movie symbolized an entire decade. The kids today just don't know what partying is, ha...trust me. It is a classic film. Hard to believe it's 34 years old. If you ask me what is the ONE film that I saw change the way people acted, dressed, danced,..you name it..it was this movie. I haven't seen a movie since that came close to affecting people the way this did. I'm SO GLAD I grew up then and not now. They can have their ghetto rap crap. No thanks.
@John22133 Just once I'd like to go into a video like this and see a top comment reading "Love the classics but the new stuff is pretty rad too". It's so mean and so hateful and I don't hear it about the classics coming from fans of new music (such as myself). You reflect poorly on the very art you're trying to champion.
@darthkrueger From your age, of course you think the new stuff is good. This was an era way before your time, that you just can't understand because you didn't live it.
It isn't "hateful"..If I don't care for the stuff of today, it isn't "hateful"..it is my OPINION, whether you like it or not. And the kids of today would have no right nor basis to put down the classics, because they weren't around nor did they live the era, as I did. See the difference?
@John22133 Got a time machine? but not all kids growing up now have a bad experience, there's the parents that play great music and movies and styles and culture around their kids and those are the kids that dress differently and express themselves CORRECTLY!! and insulting this decade truly doesn't seem like the best way to shine glory on this classic. Just saying you might wanna consider a different angle on telling that this movie changed culture in a way that's not seen often today!
ha my grandparents used to say almost those exact words about the big band era vs the 60s & 70s. i'll take either era - i wanna go back to when everybody was thin
@hsvanillakittens wow hey nice comment..yoiu are smart and sound so cool..how old are you? youre right...i cant stand rap..i think it all sucks. the 70's and 80's rocked, trust me.
@John22133 11.everytime people see me they say i look 15 or 14.i mean,i really think i look that old.My mom found the cassete of Grease and got me addicted to it.I only watched a bit of this movie but the part i watched was great.
@STR4WB3RRI3S Check out the "Story of Saturday Night Fever"..to the right..it was a special made by VH1 on its 20th anniversary, so a few years back. It's awesome. You'll learn a lot about the making of the film, plus how things were around that time..1975-1977.
I watched this film for the first time recently. I was surprised at hoe dark it was. I was expecting some sort of light hearted dance flick ala Grease but this was different altogether. A great look at old 70's disco culture. Also good for showing New York City in that era, it was dark and depressing.
what great times ,i remember clubing dancin and at that time if you were a guy.. dancin was cool and we went dressed to kill,,women wore dresses and no tramp stamps or out ragous body piercings,,and all the unprotected sex you wanted..not like the shit there playing today..man i miss those days..can ya dig it i knew that you could..
I was 21 when this movie came out and was clubbing alot. This is exactly the way it was, excect most of us guys weren't that good a dancer, and we didn't fall off bridges if our girlfriends got pregnant.
Paramount's excluding the original trailer for their movies like this John Travolta movie for example has got to stop as their DVD of this movie does not have this trailer but instead trailers for crap that Paramount released in 2007.
to me this movie has aged quite well... yea the disco clothes and such are a bit campy now and dated but the story holds up so well over all these years. Travolta is magic in this movie!!
I recall us standing in the queue for ages and it was the wrong queue??? always remember the start of a relationship which lead to the birth of 'our' daughter Natalie Anne Magda (after your mother) Jennifer Reilly-Albarudi .............Thank you very much Rakin Albarudi for my much loved daughter......she has been a JOY since birth...and now I still have a part of you..in OUR two grandson's ..
I love the deeper implications presented in this movie. There are so many more things going on among the characters than just wearing polyester and dancing to disco. Tony is truly a really deep person, one of the deepest characters I've ever seen in a film to date. I also love the way it is presented in this film that ever present pressure to be something better in society even if you are OK, especially in NYC. Or is it about not settling and changing?
the greatest film ever to symbolize the 70's, made and set in that era and about its youth, their dreams and aspirations. i love everything about this film, the disco weekends, the trials of love and friendship, the fashions.....who could ever forget flares and baggey trousers?!! wished i'd lived in that era!!! fuck grease ,it's nothing compared to this film!!
@nicky29031977 Yes, great film, however, the story was fabricated.
It was long believed that Nik Cohn had written about the New York scene in his article "Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night", which was the source material for the movie Saturday Night Fever.
In 1996, Cohn revealed the article to have been a complete fabrication, based only on club goers he knew from his native England.
I did and it was kinda special, if you were that age and had great clubs (sorry Disco's) with great jazz & Funk there was nothing like it, getting ready to go out on a Saturday Night, driving to the club picking up friends with the tape deck blaring, never wore the white suits as always thought those guys looked kinda silly, but hey, i could dance and it was a sure way to a girls head back then...................
@TheKalipse grease is a musical not making it realistic and isn't contemporary! SNF is a realistic drama with music and dance being important themes! If u believe Grease is better than please prove it ! Reply expected!
@nicky29031977 "prove"?....man, you do know people have there own opinions? there´s nothing to prove. i don´t think either of them is the best movie/musical ever, but i still like them.
i seen this movie in english it's a been a longtimes there i seen anymore this movie
i love the disco music & this movie is a reference for the disco years it was one step ahead on grease for john travolta became a celebrity with this legendary movie
I'm sorry to tell you this & I hope it won't make you not like John Travolta anymore, because he's a nice person & a good actor, but he is really a homosexual man! His marriage to Kelly Preston is FAKE & just an act to protect his movie career that brings in the mega millions & that's why he is in the closet! If he comes out, Big Studios will not hire him for Straight Roles & he will not be able to make the money he is used too. Go to tracking travolta com & click on Page of Lies for the TRUTH!
john was totally cool and hot, looking like he did then if he walked in a club today he would stand out even if he didnt dance, x factor for sure.

the greatest film ever to symbolize the 70's, made and set in that era and about its youth, their dreams and aspirations. i love everything about this film, the disco weekends, the trials of love and friendship, the fashions.....who could ever forget flares and baggey trousers?!! wished i'd lived in that era!!! fuck grease ,it's nothing compared to this film!!

@prime789 the origin of the story is irrelevant! but if u lived your 18 to 30 years clubbing at weekends like i did then this is your bible!

@nicky29031977 Frankly, compared to the 60's - the 70's sucked...

@sarahelizabethasher Youre nuts. The 60's are what ruined this country.
