  • PLEASE somebody tell me that by now shell has pulled their asses out of nigeria

  • I wonder how ordinary poeple can work for companies polluting, making Cartels, using slave labour etc. I guess its because of selfishness and the desire to be wealthier and own more.

how can for instance poeple work on shell gas stations selling their fuel, if poeple wanted to stop companies ruining our planet for more profit - they should stop working, stop voting and stop paying taxes to powermungers who do not care for anyone but themselves and their own bankaccount.

  • @DobermannPharaoh In Britain we live in a society where very few of us we have the means or knowledge to sustain ourselves any more. Most big employers- supermarkets, oil companies, banks- have disgraceful ethics, but we depend on them for sustenance & it's very hard to just stop dealing with them.

Still, we can do everything within our power...we need to return to self-sustainability.

    Shell are lawless pirates.

Really good video, I will pass it on.

  • where's jeannot bullet this century? the richest 1/10 of 1% needs to be reminded what happens to those who encroach on what is sacred. where, now, is a benevolent force for local empowerment in africa, like che or castro? how long are we gonna drive this hooptie on 4 flats before we get off our asses and change the goddamn tires? hurts me to see my people diluted into believing, relying, and accepting the "rule of law" given by lawmakers and benefactors of billions to trick us into submission

  • our species needs to resolve to stick together and cut the balls off of global fascism in all its corporate forms and physically get proactive and put an end to this goddamn awful hungry hungry hippo bullshit that's cheating this planet and all future generations out of any semblence of nature. we must get over our novel and modern but pathetic and paltry conveiniences. we all recognize the futile unsustainability and the dimented sinister underpinnings from which these modernances are contrived

  • Disgusting

  • this video is a couple years old but looks like they are working on the problem now

    bloomberg com/news/2011-10-21/shell-plans-to-boost-nigeria-gas-production-next-year.html

and looks like the government is holding out big profits after all:

Shell operates a joint venture in the nation where it holds a 30 percent stake and state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. owns 55 percent. Total has a 10 percent stake and Eni has 5 percent.

  • @Mostdef

Thankyou for the comment. It provides a source of new information on this issue plus mention of Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (which I was not previously aware of). It is corrupt. Corruption never helps.

saharareporters (dot) com - search for 'KPMG report oil subsidy'.

Your other comment plus the Bloomberg article you refer to seem to imply that Shell is blameless here. Bloomberg does not write about the locals. Documentary: 'The Corporation'. Long but worth it.

  • @LifeIsTheGreatest This video and almost everyone in the comment section thinks the sole fault goes to Shell. I did some basic research and found that Shell doesn't even own a majority stake. I don't understand why people put so much faith in Government.

Business is nothing without a consumer but government can do what ever it wants

  • Shell is there for a reason it's called a contract. These people need to hold their government responsible but it's probably too corrupt.

  • I feel really sorry for all these people! Our society relys on oil to nearly everything! I hope the find a way to solve the issue!

  • This is so horrible to watch (the documentary is made wonderfully!) and something needs to be done. I know that living earth nigeria is working on providing microturbines to make provide energy to people in bayelsa and rivers regions but is it enough? I don't even know how much LEN has accomplished.. I wonder if there are any microloan programs in Nigeria so people could get money to buy microturbines to use all of the wasted gas and power their villages as well...

  • look at all the shit going on and the creativity it brings...............strip your cloths and pee on somebodys floor.

  • As they say, don't charge a book by its cover. The girl at 1:46 might have an accent, demeanor and appearance that might be alien to many but her point is right on and could have come out from the mouth of a well educated advocate.

  • SOME ONE SHOULD SEND VIDEO THIS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA IN USA...

BOTH BP & SHELL ARE DOING THE SAME

THE VIDEOA IS MADE BY SOME VERY TALENTED PROFESSIONAL.. WONDERFUL WORK

  • SOME ONE SHOULD SEND VIDEO THIS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA IN USA...

BOTH BP & SHELL ARE DOING THE SAME

  • i laugh at the things some of you say here... that it's a lie was the the worse of them... come on, you should say you will do nothing about it, because thats what your acts are goiing to be worth against it... You see these people being abused and that the legal they could take are not being responded... will it be this way for them...still??

    tell me it all sucks

  • sad,

  • I will never use Shell products anymore!!!! And I am going to spread this video as far as I can!!! JUSTICE FOR NIGERIAN PEOPLE!!! Greetings from Spain.

  • how are the conditions in Nigeria now?

I think this is so awful and I am writing a paper on it!

  • I am living in Poland but im willing to join your fight ! What shell is doing to these people is unacceptable. Ban shell form Nigeria !

  • As a consumer of oil, I feel guilty and embarrassed that this is going on. I for one will never buy my fuel from a Shell gas station.

  • @strykkerr Most of the time in most places, gas stations get their gas from local distributors not from the parent corporation. They are also owned by small business owners, not by the parent corporation. Boycotting them only hurts small business owners. Second, try and find something you own that would be possible without oil. Everything you own and everything you rely on for convenience has it's hands in oil somewhere. Not buying from shell gas stations does NOTHING to help this problem.

  • @wildbean98

I'm sorry but this is not true. People try to say the same thing about BP. Parent companies receive a cut of profits from EVERYTHING sold at the station. They also receive a franchising fee upwards of 70,000 dollars. If people are not shopping at the station then no one is going to open up a new one which means less money. Boycotting is bad publicity as well and pressures the parent company to change it 's ways.

  • @wildbean98 yes, they're owned by small owners but do you understand how franchises work? (sorry I do not mean that to sound rude). I agree that just boycotting won't really bring the results people want.. and you make a good point about the things we use that require oil, but in places such as Indianapolis for example, it is impossible to get ne where w/out a car bcuz theres practically no public transportation system and people have no real alternative.. which is why this is such an problem!

  • cont'd It's terribly saddening to see the effects that this gas flaring is having on these innocent people. It is violating their constitutional and fundamental right to life. It made me angry to see the diplomatic way that the CEO of Shell talked to these people, dismissing and belittling their concerns, smiling, putting on a good face, and simply trying to appease these people and shut them up so he could continue doing what he was doing to their communities.

  • cont'd They have made no effort to stop the flaring; they've only come up with loquatious and cunning ways of disguising the fact that they don't even intend to stop, and scapegoated, blaming the lack of government funding for their inability to stop gas flares.

  • i wonder when will Nigerians + west africans will learn how to speak English .Should Jesus come and help this too ?/

  • @blackstheblessed Erm ... what? You watch this video and all you can say is that? WTF? And by the way...judging by what you just wrote (no offence) your English very bad also!

  • Kill all americans

  • sick immature poor bastard, go after the real people that caused you sorrows,

    you have no clue...

  • @5000mrziggy yeah genius, blame the americans, when ALL OF THE AMERICAN OIL COMPANIES have stopped gas flaring because it's inhumane and they recognized that. do your research before leaving retarded comments, Shell is a Dutch company if you didn't notice from their accents. If you said kill the Shell CEO, however, I would agree completely

  • ehy men, where are the great United States Of America, the protectors of the world???

  • FUCK SHEL!!!!!

  • I agree that the goverment should force them out. But i think the goverment knows how powerfull the big companies are. And that they would just have a military cup, and take over the country. I think its up to us in the consumers to do something. Like standing outside a shell gas station, and handing out this movie on cd to other consumers.

    FUCK SHELL!!!!

  • the goverment should drive shell out with military force if the fail to comply!

  • Nationalize the oil in Nigeria. Kick the oil merchants out of Nigeria and arrange new protocols for fair prices. Anyone who whishes to do business must first set aside money to clean up the spills and invest in the region.

So long as the capitalist slavery of Africa continues, the wars will never die out, there will be no health care, no education, no development.

  • Yeah right! And the corrupt government is going to make everything right? It's because of the way the country is run, things are like they are!

  • The changes I'm talking about require a change in government policy. Not saying it would be easy or they would have done it already.

  • Sure! I'm not defending the companies in any way, but they don't do anything the nigerian government don't allow them to do. The government have to present clear rules of do's and don'ts and then enforce these rules stricktly.

  • i think is time to stop words...those persons are PERSONS it is not an holliwood movies...THEY ARE DIEING!!! We have to stop these lobbies who make cash killing, warring and destroying...we have to use everything we can to stop them, everything!

  • agree with you man...completely!

  • Great, Great movie i'm very very very very very proud on you guys God BLESS you people

  • thanks for posting,i'll tell others to watch the video! much love from florida,U.S.A !!

  • this is very inhuman, and killing the environment, is very big crime.keep fighting for your rights people of delta!!!!!!!

  • 3.o3.o8 today morning Estonian TV shows for a first time this problem witch is so long known. At least now. I know the problem by my self a long time . i am happy that some one is working on that issue . I hope Deltan people can resolve the issue without starting to kill. But even as i m christian i will not blame them if they start kill for their children. God help them !! Behold evil minds of Shell also you have families!! ok

  • the solutions to nigeria problems is to share it to different parts, so we go our own ways,we known how to deal with the people in charge,.get them caught and kill them one by one, so shell people will have us to deal with directly.God punish the leaders of the nigeria government for allow this curse on the land.

  • shell or nigerian government never in there life come to niger delta to clean up there mess and they refused . the best thing for the people of niger delta to do is bomb the whole refinary ,

  • This is a well articulated and reasonable step to fight for justice in a civilised way.

Kudos to all. Shell, Government and some leaders in the Niger delta should take this serious and stop the mess.

  • Another sad tale of failure and evil. When will our government decide to act in the interest of the people it claims to represent? The satanic barbarians and wicked monsters who call themselves politicians should all be lined up and hung for the genocide of their own people. Their bodies should then be dumped in the trash and left for vultures to feed on. Only then will peace and progress be able to return to that great land called Nigeria.

  • Your only solution is to take over the oil wells and give an ultimatum to the oil companies to leave the country within one month after that they are fair game, hunt them down safari like.

  • I believe it is amazing that Nigerian scammers get more exposure than these damaging thieves from Shell Corp

  • Unbelievable! I cannot live in Nigeria again. We cannot power electricity 24 hours yet they are flaring gas into the air. Please tell all your pals to watch this and leave acomment for these ladies making the videos.

  • The Nigerian government can legislate and force Shell to stop whenever they want if not diplomatically then by force(militarily). I think the Nigerian government officials involved have their pockets lined thats why its still continuing...

  • thats a good point

  • Keep up the good work. the video is very informative. Most of us are not aware of what is really going on. Our newspaper and news doesnt tell us the truth!

  • Shell needs to get out or take responsibility!

  • the 'actuality walking talking shot of the Adaka and Ifia ( sorry might have spelt her name wrong but love the woman and what people like her stand for )! but the red reflection on the faces of black people coming from the poisen fire will always be remembered !

  • i'm very impressed with the stuff they manage to get from The Haque, and the way that it was decided to edit the film ! because the contrast ' spiritually draws you nearer to the distance between the two realities of the situation' i loved the white busker with his straw hat and big violin thing ( sorry but i forgot the name of the instrument ) !

  • think lara made a really nice film , and i'm really looking forward to seeing much more of her work ! i love the stuff shot in imiringi forest (especially the stuff taken on the boat )!

its captured the mood of the people, and what's really going on there in so many different interesting ways !

  • That way the money gotten can be used in some way to improve the conditions of the area. {That is if the individuals participating do not fall into the folly of corruption).

  • It's a shame that only the quality of the video compells you to comment. And although you did say you were going to comment back after watching the video, you never did. It doesn't take 11 hours to watch a 30 minutes video. The point of the video was not to show its quality but how the Introduction of Shell to the Niger-Delta has demoralized the lives of the her countless inhabitants. I was wondering instead of just taking Shell to court, is there a way to sue them for money like they do in US?

  • They've been there, done that. In 2004 the Nigerian senate ordered Shell to pay 1.5 billion dollars in compensation to communities. Shell refused. In 2006 the high court upheld the ruling. Shell appealed and, like in several hundred smaller cases against the oil companies, no money is ever paid. The appeals process drag on for years. Many Nigerian lawyers argue that the oil companies are above the law in Nigeria.

  • i filmmed the march from trafalger square to no 10 downing street, and to the nigerian high commissioner march in london last month by nigerians when gorden brown announced that he was sending british troops into the area ,where i met some interesting people , and i also meet some more interesting people with great values still fighting for the rights of people in the Niga Delta .

  • i like this film ! there's lots to talk about there apart from the subject matter, suffering of the people, and great message that it puts across .

i love the style of the documentary, the music, the feel of the whole piece, the pace ! choice of locations and the content.

the narrative voices were nice ...and some great interviewees and pleasant cinemaphotography which i'll talk about later once i've finished watching the the other 20 miniutes of the film.

    from gil

  • Thanks Gil... please go on :)

  • hi maweni ! thanks for you're comment ..there's a hell of a lot to talk about !

please forgive my delay in continuing to talk about the film in stages as i'm been busy preparing research for my film ' THE KEN SARA WIWA STORY AND THE STRUGGLE FOR THE NIGA DELTA '

i've just come back from a very interesting meeting where people we were discussing the best possible way forward and i was deeply moved by that !

  • BUT ITS THE FIRST TIME THAT I'VE SEEN A FILM THAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IN STAGES BEFORE I EVEN FINNISHED WATCHING THE FILM

will hopefully chat more about it later tonight when i get back !

    very best regards

    from gil

  • we want peace in the niger delta

  • Folk:

We must do something NOW! Both the Western countries of late China and India and the Nigerian government must be held accountable!
