I drive my Freelander2, as a livestock and property auctioneer over 100,000 k's a year and LUV it! No matter mud, nor dust (nor prang!) - see my video under Land Rover Safety
my GF has one obviously the US version LR2 inline 6 and it goes everywhere, i prefer it over the big ones just because i have seen when they cross rivers sometimes they activate the compressor for the air bags and they lock up
which is better choice for LR Freelander TD4 the automatic transmission or the manual gearbox?
My poor experience with diesel cars shows me that the diesel engine works better with automatic but as I say I have poor experience with diesel cars and non whit SUV
@benzfen yeah good! because in the united states automatics are good on us suvs but british suvs are better on manual because they give and extra push! on high inclines!
Wow this is pathetic. This car is for people that have no idea how to drive off road and need a damn COMPUTER to do it for them.....all you need is an engine and a manual trans and a brain.
@MrAlarmklock The Land Rover LR2 shares its chassis with the Volvo XC60. It uses a Volvo I6. Allow it might look similar, it shares nothing with the Ford.
ok it is the baby landrover. if you need a hard core offroader then you will be looking at its bigger brothers. but for a baby it probably the most capable 'softroader' available. remember it was built to compete against suzuki vitara/toyota rav4 not landcruisers and unimogs etc.
it needs driver skill to get the best out of it obviously but i drive a freebie1 and trust me it surprises me every time just how far it can go. we just had some very heavy snow. freebie1 pulled out a stuck transit
@jumbodoug "Softroader" - thats a common misconception with the Freelander 2. It is almost as capable as going anywhere its bigger brothers can. The only thing that lets it down slightly against the bigger models is its ground clearanc. It isn't as high, but then it was aimed at a different market - Apart from the ground clearance, it will cope with anything a Defender, Discovery or Range Rover can. Take a half day Land rover discovery - you'll be surprised what it can do...I know, I bought one

Hi! I live in Panajachel where the roads are very bad bot I have a 4x4 dissel Freelander and feel very happy and proud of him. For me the Land Rovers are the best cars in the world! I love my Freelander!!
You Aussie's have a great country for off-roading. Back in the UK we have to put up with mental ramblers with beards (including the women) and eco-mentalists. Love the Freelander but I still prefer the Disco!
I have a Defender, but I've get Freelander 2's when its in the garage. I cannot fault them. The last time I was this impressed with a Land Rover was when I first took a Defender off road. Obviously these won't be as good, but you'd be suprised how far into the rough stuff they can go!
Freelander 2 Hmmm lets see. I have owned one now since knew for 5 months. Its off road ability is huge! My friends have defender 90s and it follows them everywhere. Just stick on some general AT2s.........
@stan6818 the reason why you may keep up with defender is that you have never been properly offroading the vid was more sofroading a freelander will not go where a defender will go
brand new looks like its an excellent offroader but lets not forget the awful reputation of land rovers when it comes to reliability, so the question is, will it last?!??
Well, there are SO MANY VIDEOS AND HAPPY OWNERS to tell that you are so wrong, dude! There is no normal car with Terrain Response system. If you got problems with one of this, may be it was because you did not read the manual and did not know what was the selection dial in front of the gear lever for.
the lr2 has no low range locking front diff. you need to get the revs up to 2500 i believe to get the front tires to lock in so yes it will pretty much go anywhere the defender or lr4 can go
we just got our new freelander 2 today. I must say, for the price, it's really worth it. Steady, fast, powerful, and reactive. Perhaps not as good as some other more expensive brands. But for the mountains we live in, and our need for a 4x4 during heavy snow times, the freelander does the job.
If you read a little bit more and check the Land Rover website, you will note there is no Low gearbox manually controlled anymore. ALL LANDROVER MODELS BUT ENTRY LEVEL MODELS, has the TERRAIN RESPONSE CONTROL. That is the only and very good 4x4 system in all new Land Rovers. This video speaks by itself.
wtrdogg20, Sorry to tell you, that all LAND ROVER with exeption of the Freelander, have a LOW GEARBOX that you will have to engage in some way. And NO Sir, the Defender has NO Terrain Response Control, only a normal ETC.
No my friend, please check the Land Rover website, all Models, I dont know Defender, but all other models like Discovery4 and Freelander has the Terrain Response selector, that is the system to engage Low Gearbox depending on the terrain selection. Please check the website.
Thanks...I imagine it is like that...not everything is standard...but at least the options is there to take it, for few more hundreds or thousands, heheh!
I have a FL2 2007 model .Drives like a dream but my TS 4 S is only getting about 9.7 l/100km The specs say more to the figure of 7l/100km.
