@ Zahra514: The dance is not one of joy but is used as an artform to carry the physical form of Hazart Imam Hussein to Karbala. The drums are drums of war not joy. This is the reason it was never made a Holiday because we wanted to stop the public from alcohol.
AsalawalayKum to all, The Day of Ashura is the day Imam Hussai(a.s) was shaheed and Muslims do not have festivities like you guys are having but we mourn for ther events that occured in Karbala! It really upsets me to see that on Ashura that this must occur ex. dancing, etc. The significance of that "flag" is the "flag" Hazrat Abbas(brother of Imam Hussain) held before he was martyred on his way bringing back it's really called an Alam! For respect if you dont know learn! May Allah Be With You!
The thing is I do know what the month of Muharram and the day of Ashura is all about... I fast for those days that Imam Hussein struggled with his band of followers to reach the Euphrates only to to martyred in the name of the Prophet (uwbp) and for Islam... I do know the flag is for Abbas and since you're the expert, you should also know that in Trinidad we also remember Ali Asgar and the 5 righteous caliphates symbolized by the open hand on top of the moons.
Now nothing upsets me more than someone not knowing what and how we do and thinking they know better. I carry this on my shoulders as a reprsentation that Imam Hussein's burden is fir all of us to bear, not just him! Your way is different than mine... FINE, but don't dare comment on my belief in what I do and tell me I don't know my history and my religion! If you don't like what we do, then don't come here! Allah alone will endorse or negate our way of commemoration.... Not you! Salam...
