  • Who is the piano player?

  • too good!

  • this brother is great . i love him on Miles Davis cut '' HANNIBEL '' . THANKS FOR POSTING THIS BROTHER,S MUSIC.

  • Kenny Garrett: An Alto player, who doesn't sound like an 'alto player'.

That's why he's my favorite alto player. :)

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmnnnnnnnn

  • Chris Dave is a good player, but man does he over play. Those random open hi-hat all over the place really aren't needed. Leave space, and listen - music isn't a backing track for your self expression. Tony was busy, but he was feeling space, and one at with the group. Same with Justin Faulkner. I just never get the feeling this guy is TRULY listening.

  • @flybynight420 Yeah, but if you listen to Elvin Jones, eg, he was able to fill so much space that a bass or a piano wasnt needed for some albums... For a drummer, I think it is more a quality that a downside?

  • @jeremyb1910 Elvin did it, but with a modesty. In my favourite things he is playing everywhere, but it doesn't intrude. It's also I think down to the timbre he selected. I know this is down to taste. I just find Chris is not sensitive to the music. I feel like he's listened mostly to hip hop and funk, but not really listened to music with more dynamics. Kenny's such a great player - I'd like to see him play with Asaf Sirkis.

  • The real Kenny G!!!!!!

  • half step/ whole step scales and tritone substitutions are great ways to get outside the box. But you have to know where you want to go so you can most importantly resolve the statement of your sound.

  • I know it's on c minor,,, but what relative minor is he using on 1:51 ? can any tell me?

  • @DreamingAlive1 transcribe it and find out yourself otherwise you could be waiting a looooong time.

  • Great powerful full of feeling and integrity of the music very inspirational

  • WOW

  • @KidEllington its not bad now if you know where to look. just not a mainstream thing anymore, but hey id rather keep stuff like this to us! Lol

  • It's Kenny Garrett - Wayne's Thang :)

  • 5 notes in and you can hear the lock and freedom he's got. Amazing, beautiful man.

  • I've loved Kenny Garrett for years. Man can he blow! I mean that in a good way.

  • BIG! it seems like whatever Miles touches turns to gold

  • woderfull yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

  • Kenny just keeps getting better! Love this, thanks. Is that Marcus Williams?

  • Kenny Garrett is blessed by the ancestors, he listens, respects, and understands the story bring told by the story tellers . . . . Ho . . . my brother, continue on your spiritual path

  • @streetscaper69 thanks for putting that into words. I've thought the same thing while listening to him. "listens, respects and understands the story."

  • Why go on about mouthpeices? His tone is coming from him, no matter what set up he uses, man, he will still sound as beautiful as he always does.

  • great comment man, people r so hung up on having the perfect setup when in reality, kenny can make any horn sound like that

  • This record was made in Russia. Moscow, LeClub

  • marcus baylor got that untouchable never weakening groove

  • increible me encanto¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡

  • Kenny Garrett is blessed!

  • OUCH! killin!

  • yes BirdLives88: I use this mouthpiece and the response and the opening of the sound is really great

  • this song is Beast but i liked the other version with his quartet with Ronald Bruner jr ect

  • @ grooveworshipper: funny how you say he's dead. but i'm somehow seeing him play at a show... way to use your head, champ.

  • It's just so fuckin' how crazy how out the box he can get sometimes.

  • 1:35-1:38!!!!

  • @HoustonMills

yep:) he uses the same motif on 1:51. blows mi mind!

  • whos the drummer?

  • The drummers name is marcus baylor. He also plays for the Yellow Jackets.

  • marcus is laying it down!!!!!

  • gotta love marcus baylor's feel! What a grove!

  • kenny has it all

    deep funk time feel

    deep root blues feel

    harmonic sophistication (when called for)

    unique rich complex tone

    spiritual soulful lyricism

He is simply the most significant jazz musician of our time

It shouldn't take his death for the masses to realize this

  • i hope youre right, a genius of our time.

  • gonna see him on friday :)!

  • hes not going to die.

  • the most? the most? the most? the most? there are many

  • I love this tune!

  • Kenny Garret...the king of pentatonic scales

  • He's just blessed as can be. Great player.

  • He has such great control and concentration. Does not need altissimo to make a powerful statement. To all the young kids out there, learn this. I play in two bands as a tenor saxophone player and only need the altissimo on an exclamation point.

  • @saxmays That's kind of backwards, the way you're thinking about altissimo. You use it if you have to, just like any other part of the horn. If the line you're thinking of goes into the higher register, you play it. It's the same as anything else. Done tastefully, it works. It's a mistake to separate it just because it's a little higher.

  • @Bebopopotamus Agreed. Where have you been man? haven't talked to you in ages.

  • @saxmays he doesn't need to use atissmos.. but he uses altissmos ALOT in his solos. You uses his whole range to express himself.. there isn't anything wrong with this. Coltrane did this well, same as guys like brecker , redman, and other great tenor saxophonist. I think what you meant to say is that he uses altissmos well. All Altissimos are, are notes.. That's it. We all play notes, some are higher some are lower, some are softer , sound are louder,... He has a great approach in general.

  • @saxmays Have u listened to the great LP lately? I tell you what... There's no one that can even touch that guy. When Pickett gets going there's no stoppin him. I love me some altissimo.

  • @saxmays Yes, compare yourself to Kenny Garret, truly a smart thing to do.

  • who marked me spam? This guy is making a statement that is hard to miss

  • Man i love this video, but where is the rest of it?

  • This band is killing. Kenny Garrett is so soulful it isn't even funny. His playing really brings joy to the spirit every time I hear hime. Thanks for posting it.

    Peace, Teddy

  • fantastico inespresable lo qe siento^_^

  • Im dingin it lol

  • Live in Moscow Le-Club

  • Man my band does this song and i play alto for it and its hard to get to the level this guy is at!

  • Marcus Baylor on drums baby! Yeah! Woot!

  • Kenny is the baddest and that's official. He is the cat presently carrying the torch!

  • you guys talked about transcribing it, and different recordings. Ive transcribed the other recording.. and this one... well... i havent completely transcribed this one. almost. only about 30 more seconds

  • TRANSCRIBE IT

  • Is there any transcriptions of this available? If so, could you please email me at twombles_62@hotmail DOT com

  • I have one but for a completely different recording of the song, sounds nothing like it

  • Hi joe, could you send me your transcription ? (send me a private message for my email) Thx!!

  • Marcus Baylor is a beast! Great video...

  • In this video, yes, he's playing on a short shank soloist, but nowadays he uses a long shank soloist refaced by Fred Rast. Rast opened it up to about a .096"

  • My mistake, upon further review and scrutiny, I must say it is actually a long-shank soloist that he is playing on. I am sorry for any confusion.

  • It doesn´t matter on what sax he plays, he is just good!!!!

  • I wouldn't sweat on his set up to much, like all other great saxophonists kenny garrett is gonna sound like kenny garrett even if it was on your horn

  • hey jzjoynt i think u need some better speakers. bass sounds kickin' to me. he even turns up his amp at :45 or so

  • he has some mad licks...

  • he's the only guy out there that can play like this and not sound like he's playing smooth jazz bullshit...

  • hes actually the only guy that can play like "this" whatever this is. You might mean playing loud and soulfully, you might mean playing repetitiously and really getting into one note, you might mean playing with a backbeat. Also not quite clear as to what you mean as smooth jazz, but if its bullshit then I would agree its not this. won't be hearing this in the elevator anytime soon I dont think...

  • yeah, they all play great but in 2007 why can't you hear the bass!!!

    this ain't 1941

  • he plays the very old version of the "selmer soloist" ... Not the one they re-made nowadays, but the one from the 40's I think ... very rare! Impressive solo, though

  • someone please tell me his setup, it sounds like a ebonite meyer, but i seriously need to know

  • He plays an old selmer mouthpiece. I think it's a long shank.

  • Kenny Garrett's mouthpiece is a selmer soloist short shank E mouthpiece. I look for good deals for a mouthpiece like his on ebay, but they seem to go for a little over 400 dollars.

  • Kenny plays on a long shank soloist that he had refaced by Fred Rast. He really opened it up, to about a .096" I don't think he ever played on a short shank, I have never seen him with one, maybe he used to play on one years ago?

  • Oh. I just got that information from some internet site that was probably wrong. Thanks for the real info.

  • I bet some of these artists get so tired of being asked what they play on that they will give out wrong information just for amusement.

  • He plays a vintage Selmer Soloist Short Shank- E

  • ..no he doesn´t..wrong by me so sorry

  • He plays a selmer long shank 'soloist style' piece customized by Fred Rast and opened to .096

  • I sure does , I´ve played one , they are great! You can can realy get the kenny sound with it , but it´s very open

  • Comment removed

  • @13113050: Thanks for the info on the mouthpiece, pretty cool because Fred's my teacher, had no idea he worked on a mouthpiece for Kenny. Kenny's really killing on this tune, one of the most soulful and unique tones I've ever heard, no doubt.

  • OMG He is amazing. I saw him 2 years ago at Reno Jazz Fest. But it was too "out there" for me back then. Now this is amazing!

  • I was there! Ronald Brunner (sp?) tore it up on drums then too. I've seen Garrett live a few times, he's insanely good.

  • so much energy, one of the best alto sounds out there.

  • Coooooooooooooool!!! Nice!

  • is very cool!!! best of best!!!

  • whos the pianist..he's cool

  • I'm not a sax player... wish I was. But this video is awesome.

  • kenny garret is one of the reasons that i choose to stay on alto saxophone rather than move on tenor

  • i've always been an alto player. glad to see kenny reminding people what can be done on it

  • i dont know why people think moving to tenor will make them better when actually trying to conquer the alto is harder

  • the challenge is in two parts: learn the keywork and theory, then learn the differences in mouthpieces, saxes and styles. but alto is hard, and good luck to you both!!

  • I've never heard that switching to tenor is hard.
