Our irreplaceable Ella and Satchmo have been gathered into Heaven for a good while now. We love them, we miss them, but we can still hear their perfect style, rhythm, swing, and irrepressible joy in every note. There is a reason that big perfect diamonds are so valuable....it's because they only come along once in while. Here are the two perfect diamonds of our time.
When I saw Porgy and Bess a few years ago (probably when I was 11) at the Opera House I was so dissapionted to find out that it wasn't them! I had grown up with their version and immediately assumed it would be them. As soon as I heard the cast's voice I kind of went, "What's wrong with their voices?". I figured it out eventually. :( @wvanderwahl It certainly is a treat to listen to them, and i love them together so very much.
Priceless, the King and Queen of scat singing together. Love each one on their own also. Ella is not to be matched, just as Johnny Mathis isn't either to this day. Sure do thank you for bringing great music to our ears again. I'm 71, so I know good music when I hear it...there just isn't any anymore except JM. Is Ella still around?
@Only69now hi sir you know about music.im a musician and i think these guys were angels.on the other hand i think ella and louis armstrong will never die, because they are in our hearths!!!! dont you think?
simply amazing. closing your eyes and listening to this will take you back in time to that age when those amazing and talented people were signing. Nothing we have today can even come close to how they sang.
Absolutely amazing mucis...Cannot compare to today's music. I say that as a 19yo m who loves techno, rock and pop/charts. I still find this absolutely exquiste music with a quality not found today
@dannyisdos yes sir, i Love like almost ALL Music, and Rock and Pop and other stuff, its all great. but my favourite is old Sinatra and other Jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, and Sammy Davis, and Dean Martin, and many many more...they all are truely amazing, and i wish that this kind of music WAS more popular today. too bad... =/
@dannyisdos I am 19yo and I feel the same way as you feel. I have always loved music but until today I never went it depth of my favorite artists inspiration.
there is still alot of quality music being produced these days, you just got to look in the right places to find it as most of it is not made for the commercial, money driven industry ;-) but yes, ella, billie, louis etc are amazing! love them :)
I made a request for someone to post this about a year and a half ago now, and someone has. Thank you so much. This is music at its very best. So much improvisation. This is the dogs bollocks. Thank you. Mmmmmm. There you go.
The god and goddess have sung. God, they were amazing on their own, but together a rare exquisite treat, a delight for the ears, they were truly magical and so elegant and refined. Why are todays artists like these two?
It hasn't really gone down but the zeitgeist has changed, and along with it goes musical taste. You can still find great artists today, you just have to look a bit harder :).
I am willing to learn. Give me some names. But don't name the surviving artists from yesterday (like Cleo Laine) and not those simply continuing the jazz-tradition without adding anything new.
i don't think the quality of overall jazz has fallen. It's just that they were damn good we look bad :\ yeah but as i drummer i think drumming has progressed a far way in jazz in that it's now more about syncopation and the rhythms are more complex. just look at ari hoenig. it's innovative new but good but yeah. we shouldn't compare ourselves w/ the great masters themselves.
But yeah i think "mainstream" music has turned more into storytelling not really musicality. but yeah there are still definitely some awesome music out there today. so this isn't for everything
Mate, I agree with every word that you said. Ella is marvelous! And I'm Brazilian, which means I know really good female singers of my own country as well! But when it comes to jazz, Ella is the best!
This song is so amazing! Ella and Louis were so good at what they did I'd even go so far as to say they were a few of the bests artists. I listen to this kinda stuff and I'm fourteen. I got this song on my ipod, too.

Savoy, the home of sweet romance,
Savoy, it wins you with a glance,
Savoy, gives happy feet a chance to dance.
Your old form just like a clinging vine,
Your lips so warm and sweet as wine,
Your cheek so soft and close to mine, divine
