g3nby, I think you may have me confused with another person's comment. I fully support what Mr Trudeau has done. Man I love second-line and he has given others the chance to see it being performed. He admits himself that it is not exactly authentic. My comment is to those who are dismissing his efforts. We all know that everyone is perfect if they make a criticism on yt. Cheers and peace brother:)
@daverow49 Hi D. You & I already enjoy the music & culture. You probably know as much or more than Trudeau. BUT how will folk who DON'T know or listen, be attracted to the music? Don't attack Trudeau. He's ON YOUR SIDE. He trying to attract! Make your OWN documentary. Put ur slant on it where U don't agree. I/We see sad decline in the UK. Audiences are dying as fast as Musos! In-fighting among folk who love it, won't help.It wrecks religions, politics&families! Peace &positivity to all in 2012
@Nayelle1290 i'd like to see if youtube can let me give you MORE than one "thumbs up" on this comment and response, lol.......it's my sentiments exactly!
@Nayelle1290 glad to get that info, i agree with you totally on BOTH responses. What is this guy (Trudeau) trying to do??? Btw, are you aware of Mobile, Alabama (our sister city) trying to co-opt the "secondline" culture as their own (aside from New Orleans)? See their videos such as "Bay city brass bands on here and google it also.
@legomanadventurous I believe it's the Dr. John version of Professor Longhair's "Big Chief" (Written originally by Earl King) off the album 'Dr. John's Gumbo"
Thanks for the post you and the kids are really cute. I lived in no in the 1980's I really enjoyed the celebrations and the secondlinning it is really fun. thanks again
You can't include the "whole" State of Louisiana in this culture just as you can't include the whole State of Michigan for the music of Detroit (Motown) for their sound. this is a distinct sound and culture of N.O. only. I've talked with people from cajun country (Lafayette etc.) to Baton Rouge and they say brass bands and S.L. is not their culture. Scnd. line dancing can be learned to a certain degree, but it's really born in the 'hood of Black New Orleans. See Fauborg Treme' on YOUTUBE.
this is ridiculous. I'm sorry . I'm a new orleans native why would you sell a book how could you sell a book like this? second line is one of those things you just "do"
i thought that it all depended on the correct conjugation of the verb. when i was in new orleans in '05 and then baton rouge in '06 (and i went to other parts of the state, too), i saw it spelt roulez. although we did get a letter from the mayor of new orleans signed laissez les bons temps rouler. i guess you're right. :) i don't know french.
Oh no, I was just visiting New Orleans for a week. Happy Mardi Gras to you, too! I'm Episcopalian, and most of us are boring and call it Shrove Tuesday. I like Mardi Gras too.
My family did conveniently move out of Charleston, SC just 6 weeks before Hurricane Hugo hit in '89 though! :p
@neuroticartist yes it's rouler in that phrase. roulez means you roll, so it doesn't make sense, and cajuns don't spell it that way, just tee shirt vendors from out of town.
emakav, close your mouth and open your ears. stop being so bitter and closed minded. btw, its and uptown thang. from the 3 to the 17th. but you already knew that huh? apple and eagle. Rep'n
Now with 66,no parades up here, only wish one day get burried in N.O.and all of you playin a closer walk with thee..my G.M.clothes could legate to your Preservation Hall.MAX
As 1st and only Grand Marshall of Argentina, would like to congratulate for this video( I Live now in Spain),and if some like to hear my story, please send me an email,Former correspondent for Downbeat and Miss.Rag,MAX
Robert, Thanks for the education! You leading your small three boys through an empty uptown street? "Someone will pass you a purple tissue box... please join me in my favorite dance." Can't tell you how much some of us can appreciate your benevolent sense of humor, right about now. :)
This video is a result of personal experience and historical research culminating in knowledge which was then adapted and applied through Mr. Trudeau's efforts as a teaching model to be shared with others. I applaud your mentoring spirit. Thank you!
I like the video mr. trudeau and you can dance. You didn't weigh your video down with cliches or your social views which happens alot. Im from Louisiana and I like the video, its very accessible.Adding the Dr.John prop would leave the people with another good reference.
Of course, this is an enthusiast's how-to that emanates from respect and admiration for Creole/Crescent City culture. No, it is not "authentic," as aaronfast thoughtfully appreciated. But it has its place. Thanks for enjoying its spirit.
The music that carries the bulk of the second lining is from the Rebirth Brass Band's cd Feel Like Funkin It Up (Rounder). One of the most energizing tracks in my entire record library.
Apologies on not identifying the music, which is Dr John's version of Big Chief as found on his classic 1971 album, Dr John's Gumbo. I think the organist was Ronnie Barron, based on the album notes. This is one of my favorite cuts of all time. Merci!
There is really nothing wrong with this video, but as the first comment, i'm betting billions of dollars that 90% of the discussion is going to be about race. The only beef I've got with this thing (aside from not being terribly authentic, which is fine), is that he doesn't identify the music! I wanted to check it out.
thx Robert for postin this.. you know the privateers run this camp

ok from what my gf just told me, rouler is the correct french spelling but the roulez is from the Cajun, thats her guess *LOL*
