The frozen fish sled runner trick DID exist but only as an emergency contingency if they could find no decent driftwood or whale bone, their preferred materials.
Davis is exhibiting a common trait of his kind, assuming that a culture, just because it is different, is somehow superior. I hate it when people get romanticised beyond all reality.
I read Wade Davis' "The Serpent And The Rainbow" and I read Freuchen's books, including the one with the aforementioned story where he almost froze to death. I do NOT recall any mention of a poo knife. Perfesser Davis said he got that part from reading Freuchens' original journal. I wonder about that. I think the good perfessers venerable friend was telling him a tall tale. Arctic old-timers love to do that.
I'm in Montana. nearly the first of August, and we have already had snow. Still have plenty from last winter. Screw Al Gore, global warming, and the fools who didn't pay attention in class in high school.
people can go crazy in the arctic, especially in the summer. a shit load a mosquitoes in the endless terrian of tundra. in winter on the ice, it just seems endless of nothingness... well, that is ofcourse if you're alone in the tundra and don't kno what to do
There's no way the ice is gone by March in that area. I spent a winter in Igloolik, South of the area he refered to in Greenland and the ice remains there well into June. Politics meets science
hehe i never herd about the shit knife hehe kinda funny story i think that story is a lie sounds like that person told a story is a good story teller hehe
Well I for one wasn't worrying about global warming. I have been hoping earth to warm up for decades. The polar bear would move south to where land is and become invisible because of their clear fur. So he would be even more deadly with global warming. Must have moved north because he wanted acknowledgement. for his deeds. Who knows the polar bear might have been god before the ice age. Being invisible and all. Don't those people look chinese. Don't buy knives in Canada they smell and melt.
it would be classic if the inuit told that bullshit story to the white guy knowing latter he would try shitting in his own hand and spitting on it! LOL burn!
@OhNoItsGojira I think it would be cool. The idea of invading Iraq or something would be as absurd as California invading North Dakota. We'd be forced to get along.
@FistfullaBerries "Forced to get along..." That says it all right there. So basically you're a submissive individual content with living in a fascist, tyrannical gov't that forces you to do things and destroys all National sovereignty across the world. That sounds like a real fun zone to me.
where the hell did you get the term "fascist" and "tyrannical"? I'm not referring to a one world government tomorrow, but if we want to sustain our own existence here on planet earth, and im referring to 10 or 20 generations from now, we need to come together. A one world government wouldnt work today and it most likely never will. The narrow minded idiots like you will be our downfall.
@FistfullaBerries By suggesting we would have to be "forced" to get along you are implying a certain degree of coercion that will result from a one world government. This is quite true, and exactly what fascist States do. How putting the fate and control of the entire planet into one government body would ever be considered a good or desirable idea is beyond me. Nations and cultures need to remain independent and unique; and let the goodwill of science aid human progress.
You have the larger problem of not being away of all the falsified data concerning GW thats broken the news globally the past 2 months - I suggest you use your own mind and stop being feed the corporate mass media mind control crap
well apearantly "science" is now fraud because sceintists are just as selfserving as everybody else . with enough grant money i could get sceintists to declare a chicken invented the metric system
Science concerns itself with data, and reason. Observational evidence. No amount of grant money can make something false to be true. Science prides itself in its process and the "frauds" get weeded out immediately upon arrival.
It is a sad moment though, that money helped protect these "frauds" for so many years about human made global warming. Well now that it has finally been exposed, science can now return to topics of concern. Like improving our waste management systems, or reconstructing rivers to former flow paths. The billions that were spent on that "fraud" could have contributed to numerous ecological and resource gathering successes.

@Ullatitaq Huh? Well yeah, depends were I am left. You leave me In the cold snow Oh yeah I would die. Now, you left me In a Mediterranean climate area I would do o.k for a while.
@codexbiohazard that`s `if` and `would` talk. you don`t stand a chance surviving out here or any other place, be real, just because you watched it on youtube or on tv that doesn`t mean you can do it. well stupid stuff you can do and i can laugh my ass off. racist prick.

The temperature goes up and down, it's been happening since the dawn of time. With or without humans I might add. I don't see how this presentation of "shit knives" spells or dispels doom.
@anikinippon - One could argue that a people so creatively dealing with the cold might be equally creative in dealing with the warmth. In any case, it's adapt or go extinct, like it's always been, since the dawn of time, with or without humans.
@PuppetXeno exactly my point, we could be wiped out like 99.8 percent of all lifeforms that ever existed on earth, it wouldn't be impossible and at the same time, likely. We can't adapt our way out of a stone the size of Kansas. I mean, we can be ingenious all we want, but it doesn't necessarily stop us from dying out. I just thought it was a weak connection that the speaker was making. He wants to be talking about "shit knives" while physicists already made made a no radiation nuclear reactor.
anikinippon, most of the things contemporary science has produce from soild state electionics transitors to nuclear power plants are spin offs from the millitary research into killing people.

Ya i think the Soviets had that kind . turns out it really sucked for the millions that died of starvation on their "own" farmland .
it was illegal for a farmer to eat any of his own produce as it was state property and punishable by death research the famine in the Ukraine

Adaptation is our only hope.
Learning from these other cultures is a key way we will learn to adapt.
