  • The last level on this game is ridiculous

  • Please CGR, review more Shmups!

    Soldier Blade

    Fantasy Zone

    Gradius Rebirth

    Ordyne

    Final Soldier

    Super Star Soldier

There's just so, so many awesome ones. And now you have a TG-16, you've no excuse!

  • i never got past that lobster =/

  • I grew up on this game :D and I think that the music is AMAZING!! Just sayin'

  • sharks arent fish...

  • Super Nova was my favorite Darius game.

  • The Darius games kick major ass!!!

  • my name is DARIUS ^_^ and i play this game

  • @dariusmoi Dorood. ^^

  • @Hammid what? xD

  • Just loved the lobster comments :) Nice review.

  • I think the soundtrack is on-par with Gradius III.

  • This game is now available on Wii VC.

  • @venusprojection This used cartridge is now available for purchase for my old SNES on eBay

  • @venusprojection it is now

  • You should try Metal Black on Saturn, it was originally ment to be Darius 3 and the gameplay shows.

  • darius series music tier Iist: -top- sagaia (SMS) darius (PCE) darius twin -mid- darius gaiden darius II (aII others) darius force -Iow- g darius have yet to hear burst so i don't know where it stands
  • @jewtubejewtubejewtub I really like G-dariu's OST.

  • super nova on the snes is actually a port of darius force, and is somewhat better than darius twin. anybody who likes darius but is a little disappointed by this one should play super nova.

  • Sweet totally going cartridge hunting

  • 2:24 send those little sharks to school !! LMAO !!

  • The music is just super wacky in this game.

  • darius twin certainly isnt better than darius gaiden, but darius gaiden certainly isnt as good as G-Darius

  • 3:21 WIND SQUID!

  • WindSquid?

  • I love this game!!!

  • This game is still good but as you said, not a patch on Darius Gaiden. But it's still nice to play.

  • @ 5:35

    it's a Giant Enemy Crab!

  • the SNES is the last place i would think to play shmups due to the slowdown on that console but this looks pretty cool. i have Darius gaiden for saturn which is really fun.

  • @MatticusFinch1820

slowdown??? the only time I ever experianced lag on an snes is with a fighting game. (mostly Fatal Fury special)

  • @MatticusFinch1820 Lol...you really need to play Axelay, Super Aleste, Cotton 100%, flying hero, parodius series, Popn twinbee, on Snes.

  • shut the fuck up the Dreamcast was a great release but however i must agree with you on the Saturn screwing up the Dreamcast as well as Sega's overall reputation

  • i still have this game i really want to play it too bad my snes is broken

  • Nice review, but I disagree in a few points.

It's not really fair to compare this to Darius Gaiden, which is a game from a superior generation. You could've commented about Darius Twin Vs. Darius II (Sagaia) on the MD or the PCE-CD.

And Darius Twin isn't a masterpiece, but totally crushes Arrow Flash, a bland and boring game with horrible sounding music IMO.

  • I knew a kid in school named Darius, and he was a twin.

  • @JonO387 Winliest win ever.v Did he ever acknowledge it, or did he not get the reference?

  • The Genesis version of Darius II was called Sagaia for some reason!

  • i had this game when i was little, it broke, and my babysitter tried to fix it, and i couldnt remember the name of it when i first discovered emulators, and even when i was little i couldnt find the title to buy a new one. i searched SNES Shmups to see if i could find it, thank you to the author of this vid.

  • i used to think the bosses at 2:30 shot ice creams at me

  • ooooh yeh, this game kicks asssssssssssss.

i used to play this game everyday in the 90's

  • WTH is with the Japanese and seafood. They're so obsessed with them they put them in video games, movies, and tv shows.

  • Oh gee, I don't know...maybe because THEY'RE ON A SERIES OF ISLANDS?

  • sharks lol.

  • Sorry to say this Mark, but Darius was indeed on the Genesis in the form of Darius II which came out in 1991.

Good review overall, I didn't think this series was one the better ones out during that generation though it defiently wasn't bad.

  • Way to not listen! Mark said that Daris Twin was not released on the Genesis...and it wasn't.

And don't say that Darius 2 is the same game..its not. It was a different game.

  • I was under the impression that he was referring to the entire Darius series as opposed to one game, and I know Twin and II are not the same game. I guess I heard it wrong, I apologize.

  • Ah, the memories... Thanks, CGRHD!

  • Can I download this game on Virtual Console?

  • you should get siberian strike for ipod touch

  • YEAHHHHHHHHH DO MORE SUPER NES GAMES!!!!!!! ive scoured ur website for reviews however i absolutely hate the ones from early 2000 late 90's ...so hey lets just do them all over again. k? :)

  • yoshi's island

  • the ones with that other guy? no way those ones are funnier and it gives u 2 opinions about the game instead of just one

  • Music reminds me so much of mega man x.

  • It's true, this really doesn't hold up to a Saturn classic like Darius Gaiden. Gameplay is not nearly as dynamic. But it was fun at the time! My college roommates and I had this game back in the early 90s.

I actually disagree with Mark, though, (pretty rare!) about the music on this game. I think it's great! I was amazed at how quickly my memories came back as I watched this video.

  • Music is banging!

  • your comment on that shark was way cool

  • i used to have this game. i completely forgot about it...thanks for reminding me lol i gotta go pick it up again

  • Thunder Force 4 on the Sega Genesis is the best shooter in this style....and Bio-Hazard Battle :D

  • This game is so R-Typish. Great Review BTW. I am a huge fan of SNES games.

  • Whats with the Fish?>

  • japanese game maybe cause japan is a bunch of islands?

  • looks worth a play for snes fans - like graduis... but with fish!

  • The music reminds me of UN Squadron, another awesome game!

  • hmm, this looks a lot like gradius.

  • Your Oldschool Games Reviews are SOOO much better than the New releases Reviews. Not that I don't like to be kept up to date but the Older games are just Oh So much more charming, interesting.

Take the Music to this game for example, it's not like any other style of music & it's this kinda music that realy inspires me. I hate the World for NOT letting me Compose Music for computer games. All I ask for is a chance!

A Great little number this game looks like. I might look it up. :-P

  • I've only recently discovered how much i actually enjoy these shooter games. I've been missing out on a lot all these years :(

  • You should check out Space Megaforce for the snes, its an awesome spaceship shooter.

  • best shooter 16-bit and the award goes to ThunderForce V

  • I loved this review! I hope there are more like this!

  • I know why he didn´t like the boss at 3:28 ...tootaly looks like Wind Squid! :( or a evil twin atlest.

  • Ugh, I think I head enough about freakin' Darius Gaiden.

  • How bout Ninja Gaiden? Or Zelda Gaiden A.K.A. Majora's Mask? Or Raiden that rhymjes with Gaiden? All kidding aside, I find vertical shooters much better than horizontal as you have much better movements.

  • snes the best!~!!!

  • Blast from the Past.

  • I remember when I first got my SNES, this was a game I wanted to purchase. I never did though ... Kept passing it up for other games like Ultraman and Rival Turf! LOL! But now that I collect retro games from flea markets and such ... I got it! It's better than Rival Turf. But that's not saying much! Arrow Flash is pretty cool too. But SNES music always sounds better to me than the tunes off the Genny.

  • for the most part that is true, but some music programmers have done great things on the genny! check out the music from sonic the hedgehog, phantasy star 2, strider, revenge of shinobi, shinobi 3, streets of rage 1 & 2, batman and robin to name a few. i like the yamaha synth chip when it's used to it's full potential or even when it's not such as in the case of toejam & earl. ;)

  • I have heard the music from most of the Genesis games you have mentioned. And they do sound very good. I believe the SNES sound chip was custom built by Sony and that's why it has a bit of an edge. But true, in the right hands the Genesis could support some great music. I happen to enjoy the music from Ghouls "N Ghosts, Sonic 2, Trouble Shooter, and (my FAVORITE) ... DJ BOY!!

  • Keep in mind the SNES ('91) came out 2 years after the Sega Genesis ('89).. so there was some expectation of improvement in the sound dept. :P

The Sony sound chip on the SNES is great. I just think the Genesis and Yuzo Koshiro have done some great things with limited hardware.

On the SNES I love the music for Actraiser, R&R Racing, Plok, S Adv Island, Spiderman Vs Xmen, Demon's Crest, DKC 1-3, etc..

Some musicians like Tim Follin, Yuzo, and Dave Wise really knew how to get the most out of it!

  • You know, I refuse to shed a tear for a company that never learns from its mistakes.

SEGA had plenty of time to come out with a machine that was more powerful than what they had...

And its not like they didn't have previous experience with Nintendo kicking their butt (NES vs Master System) to understand that they had to come out strong and STAY strong.

But, they didn't learn anything, released the Saturn and the Dreamcast, and nearly pulled an Atari on us...

  • @i8246i if they had skipped the saturn and released the Dreamcast a year earlier they woudld still be around.

in retrospect the saturn is a good, but needless console.

  • @BillyCauseyjr

Saturn = shitty console with amazing games.

  • @MatticusFinch1820 somthing like that, yeah.

  • Genesis Ghouls N Ghosts music and sound effects = HORRIBLE.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts wins not only with better music, but better graphics.

  • OK, I'll give you that. Genesis Ghouls N Ghosts' music can't touch SNES Super Ghouls N Ghosts' music. But the Genesis title WAS very faithful to how the arcade sounded. Almost EXACT. Super Ghouls N Ghosts was built from the ground up on the SNES and really took advantage of the Sony sound chip. And it did sound GREAT! Now I know this is a seperate issue ... but if you want to talk about SLOWDOWN ... the Genny had NONE. But the poor SNES started to crawl once too many sprites hit the screen.

  • I've experienced plenty of slowdown with the Genesis.

And the arcade of Ghouls and Ghosts didn't have the grating "clink! clink!" noises that the Genesis makes because its sound capabilities are just...crap.

Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Genesis Sonic games and their music, I love how some games sound on the machine...but if there was a multiplatform release, the sound quality was better on the SNES.

  • Looks like a good game, I have Arrow Flash on Genesis.

  • I didn't like the arcade darrius I played because when you died you lost all your powerups and basically you were totally screwed at whatever point you died at and sometimes you lost a lot of power ups all to be taken away at one shot. That just sucked moose ass. But they made games ni-impossible in the arcade so that you would pump quarters into them. For a home game, I think not loosing your powerups is the right way to go, or to lose 1 level of each thing would work for me as well.

  • downloaded it already for the computer...lol emolator

  • REVIEW G DARIUS FOR THE PS ONE PLEASE

  • i traded this game to my friend for zoop, after that i never traded a game again, how i miss this

  • review G-Darius that game was badass but hard!!!

  • i love the intro music!!!!

  • That's a very unique feature that you keep your powerups when you die, I've never seen a shmup that does this ever before. Takes this game up a couple notches imo 8/10 instead of 6.

  • I had g darius for ps1 and it was awesome!

  • all bosses are fish?

  • nice

  • lol all the bosses are fishes XD

  • perhaps giant enemy crabs?

  • They're not really a challenge if you know where to attack them (for massive damage).

  • FISH ATTACK

  • Sweet! I love this game. Was wondering if you'd get around to reviewing it. nice review, mark.

  • ...aah, Arrow Flash. I thought you said Aero Flash.

  • i can get this on wii shop channel?

  • i dont think so, but some jerk thumbed you down, so i thumbed you back up.

  • good for you. its refreshing to see some decent, sane people on this site.

  • thx u rock! lol

  • @mikexlong

    That sounds so wrong.

  • @Terramax maybe, in your perverted mind.

  • Marc, if you don't find this game particularly interesting, could you try to pinpoint what exactly makes sidescrolling shooters interesting for you?

  • They're fun?

  • I have been looking for a game like this on my ps3 have they made any good 1's yet?

  • I recently reviewed this myself.

There's also Sagaia on Genesis, and Super Nova on SNES.

That is, a prequel (Darius 2) and a sequel (Darius Force)

Darius Twin (Darius 3) is the best out of the three IMHO, only because you keep your power ups when you die.

Super Nova is the worst, it makes you restart the level when you die.

Darius Twin is the only 2 player one.

So that also makes it the best, on top of the other fact that already makes it the best.

Sagaia has the best soundtrack though..

  • this game reminds me of biohazzard battle for genesis

  • why are all the enemies fish?

  • Cause it's Darius. :3

  • OMG thx for giving this game a review! This was my 3rd Super Nintendo Game I owned when the SNES first came out! Wow I am getting old ^_^

  • Good job, though I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts on Axelay. At the very least, the music quality of Axelay is outstanding, especially compared to this imho. :)

  • is it just me or do his videos take a long time to load

  • u must have the slower internet conecction evar

  • maybe it's the stupid ads taking up the bandwidth, I have an ad blocker on so none of them appear on my computer.

  • I don't seem to think that you've ever been a huge SNES fan, Mark.

  • I loved this game! I played the heck out of this and F zero then!

  • nice review :)

  • r type 3 is the best shooter on the snes.

  • this game is older than me...... but i have better graphics

  • lol!.

  • I wouldn't compare this game with darius gaiden.more like darius 2 for the genesis.but aesome review anyway.

  • How awesome would it be if somebody just merged every well-made side-scrolling space shooters into the same game? :D

  • 1st boss = kyogre

  • lol Mecha Windsquid at 3:24

  • Do you sleep? I swear, you seem to post at least two videos a day, every day of the week. Keep it up, you are the best at reviewing games out there.

  • LOL! my nick name :)))

  • whats with all the sea creatures in this game xD

  • a hungry jap made it :D

  • The music. It's horrible. Horrible, I tell you!

  • always love the dry humor in your reviews

  • instead of fighting a lobster you should fight a GIANT ENEMY CRAB in that level :p

  • and you attack its weak point for massive DAMAGE !!!

    real time..... weapon change !

    :D

  • a giant crab that accurately portrays realistic japanese war like in genji?

  • Review Apidya for the amiga you know you want to...you get to play as a wasp, and shoot a mole...it's the best thing ever

  • I love the music in this game.

  • reminds me of the mega man music.

  • "you should have sent them to school" why did i laugh my fucking asshole off from that?

  • child abuse

  • For snes space shooters you should check out R-Type III : third lighting, Un squadron, gradius iii and starfox. There is also G Darius on the psone if your a fan of darius games.

  • Coul you review Gradius V? :P

  • super nintendo isn't classic?

and maybe you should watch his other reviews.

  • In actuality, the Super NES is classic. basically, classic gaming era in my opinion as well as avgn's ended after the Super NES.

    -kidThunder

  • Well, the show itself is classic, so even if he reviews new games, it's still Classic Game Room :)

  • Oh man, this is one of my childhood faves. Awesome you decided to review this.

  • has anyone played darius or darius 2(arcade), there pretty uniqe, the hava a screen about 2 screens wide.

  • the shield reminds me of the space ship sections in turican II on the commadore amiga

  • Jeez, Super NES music usually rules supreme, but the soundtrack in this game is ridiculously ass.

  • The first level's music is not bad.

  • 3:29 ZOMG! ITS WIND SQUID'S Evil Twin!!!

  • theres a 50 life code for this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the main menu, highlight the desired number of players. On Controller 2, hold L and R. On Controller 1, hold SELECT and START. The lives will now be set to 50.

  • Been missing these classic reviews.

Good to see you haven't lost the touch ;)

  • Music just awesome in this game!

It would be great to review Bio Metal on SNES - also good space shooter.

  • at the end of the description you called the game darius gaiden in stead of darius twin

  • I'm sure he feels horrible.

  • haha very funny i just thought i'd point that out

  • The music in Darius Twin sounds more like Mega Man X...

  • the only side scroller that I was ever good at was Lifeforce on the NES. I was goot at Gyrus too but I guess that's technically that's not really a side scroller.

  • As a regular reviewer of SHMUPs u should give one of the twinbee games a go.

  • Nice Arcade style shooter game you found Mark, you should you try Gradius 3, Un Squadron and Star Fox those 3 are highly recommend just check screwattack's top 20 SNES game you will see what I've mean.

  • not bad for a 1991 game. Nice to see a SNES review :D This is not one of the better SNES games.

    Good review!

  • at least a good video game :D

  • I'm 15 and I KNOW WHAT THIS IS!!!

  • @DarkCybrid

    I'm 12 and i don't

  • Great vid as usual, but aye, the two SNES games are easily the weakest in the series. You should definitely check out G-Darius if you haven't already. There's a good, inexpensive port of Darius II on the Saturn, as well. :)

  • G-Darius is so much frickin fun. I played it on Playstation Underground Disc #14 and fell in love, had to have it. Finally got a copy of it! Incomplete, just the game, but oh well.

  • fight this giant enemy crab....
