@DanPrinMan - the movie itself gets far more depressing than the trailer. It's downright heartbreaking.
Who'd want to watch it? Anyone interested in how the human condition was affected by the historical and cultural moment explored by the film. The 50s were a difficult time for many of that generation, often even those who were privileged by the system (middle class white people). The novel was written as the 50s were unfolding and the film captures the feelings beautifully.
I'm 17 and when I watched Titanic the first time I was three with my parents and of course I didn't know what was going on until I was 8. I just recently watched it last week making the count of ten times. Leo and Kate should be in more movies together. Heck they should been together in real life. They look good together in looks and personality. Now I'm done ranting *sighs heavily*. :)
It would have been so cool if this movie took place a few years earlier. That way, they might've have had the cool opportunity to put in little "Easter eggs" referencing something like a"tragic boat accident" that hapenned years before.
@summerdying111 happy endings are never better because they are happy. Happy endings are a hollywood inventing. And most of all, happy endings aren't better because they're not realistic. The best films almost never have a happy ending.
@QueenOfDreamsXxX I couldn't agree anymore. Finally a film that shows you can't just walk off into the sunshine and live that happy full life you've always dreamed but thats not the way reality works out all the time. Not saying you can't have a happy ending but too many films project an image that life turns out in a rainbow after it rains when really, it doesn't.
Still can't believe that that's Leo and Kate. I mean, they were Jack and Rose in Titanic, and now they're Frank and April Wheeler. And Frank and April wind up hating each other, don't they? Oh, the irony!
I had the good fortune to see this movie & I rate it a 10, for acting, subject matter, & truth of its reality; 10 for ease & reality of performance; 10 for honesty & belief of each person as an actor. I consider each to be top in their field & the chemistry between truly felt as sincere.
It took them 11 years to come up with the idea to put Leo and Kate back together? I'm not the kind of person who goes insane over this stuff, but come on!
@Kikkoman03 Kate technically didn't get snubbed. She was up for "The Reader" (which she won). For the GG's, the producers of "The Reader" allowed her to be placed in the 'Supporting Actress' category (she won), & then she was able to be nominated for Leading Actress for "Road" (which she also won). When the Oscars came around, the Academy determined she couldn't be nominated for Supporting Actress for "Reader" since it was a lead role. How they picked between the 2, I don't know.
Movie is full of true emotions, course played by good actors. Like others said a roller coaster of life. We shared few months with them.Sorry to say, but Jesus or God would have not helped them. Women was much more stronger than this Men. It was akward to feel her hopes flushed away, he was happy even though that he said otherwise. She was willing to give everything. In the end she made a decision which took my ground away. Strongest scene, the old man turning his earing off.........
This movie was not right. I was just thinking they need Jesus. I'm being honest. I was expecting romance and maybe some type of growth. They were both into themselves too much. It was a mess. If we are meant to hate it then they did a good movie. I mean no one ever makes a movie intentionally aimed at being a horrible movie.I'm single so...of course that mess was horrible. The best actor was the man who played the guy with the mental problems. I liked his honesty. No good feeling after.Hopeless
Watched the movie, it was depressingly great. Kate and Leo are BOTH amazing in it. You can feel their raw emotions in every scene, not to mention great chemistry together. Both deserved oscar-winning performances.
This film is so powerful and upsetting because it reflects reality. Many people seem to essentially get into conventional traps, be it massive debt or having children too early, they work jobs they hate and forget about what it means to be alive.
Its a powerfull movie, and i think that the fact of the filmmaker is the kate winslet husband dont change anything about the playground of the characteres, or the space for others without kate winslet, like some people like to say. I think that sam mendes could give more credibility to kate, its natural. But the space for leonardo dicaprio dont left .
Watched this three times on HBO. Never caught the beginning of the film but it is so great anyway. Whenever Leonardo and Kate star on a film, it is always EPIC.
@Kayla119petrey *spoiler* she attempts to give herself an abortion at home and she bleeds to death. Horrible ending, depressing movie, but this trailer is powerful.
@leshark I've seen it, and it just failed to capture the "hopeless emptiness" like the book did for me, Richard Yates has an amazing way with words and it's how the book is written that makes it brilliant less than te actual plot of the book and stuff, and it's very rare that films can ever quite get it right. They're making a film adaptation of "On The Road" and it'll be lacking the same things this did.
of course it's not for some people, as it is not a 'feel-good' film; it shows the naked truth of the harsh reality for some. the wardrobe is amazing and Kate and Leo are phenomenal. Their acting = A+ on this one, sad that this movie and Leo's performance was snubbed.
Really good film. Has a lot in it that recalls American Beauty and features a great pair of performances from the leads who have really matured brilliantly since Titanic. Nice nod to include Kathy Bates too. Where was Bill Paxton though? :))
i just saw the movie and found it very intriguing though, but the whole concept was quite real.. very real to the eyes of the audience and the reader who had read the novel.
i didnt really like this film, how awful life seems and how April just wanted out, completely out by killing the baby and herself, i ahted this movie it's too harsh on life
the movie is gud... coz it provoked some thinkin. dreams are great , yet whats even be better are when they are shared. For me - its all about the perosn u are with , no the place or conditions ... i guess im a dreamer too.
I love the trailer, but I do not like the story. Mostly, because of the ending. April's character was confusing what was the cause for holding her back from achieving her dream: it wasn't the new baby, it was her husband. Revolutionary Road is a classic American novel that was written in the early 60s by Richard Yates. American Beauty came later, so it is actually the weaker version of Revolutionary Road.
This movie kind of freaked me out. It's just so awful that some people are so miserable with the way their lives turned out and this is what happens. I had chills when it ended it was so good and somewhat depressing. They're both amazing actors
a perfect example of people not being grateful for what they have, life isn't perfect for anyone, but why for a second, can't we just be content with the good we have and stop being dissatisfied with everything, they were responsible for their own misery and created their own problems,
Although I truly adore the novel, I would agree. Yes, living static and by all accounts mediocre life can leave you unsatisfied, but like you said. No one's life is perfect and all of us have to accept that on some level we will mostly be just ordinary. Is it fair to have to stifle the urgency of your greatest aspirations? No. It's not. But that's life. If I were them I would just try to save for a trip to Paris. It won't be like living there but at least I got to go.
what is scary is that europe adopt american life style ....and there is no way back.....i lived in europe and america ...i,m sick of both ....i want to return to origin of life ....
what to say? Amazing movie, effects were awesome story was great, really the best movie ever. If you havent seen it yet you? can check it out at MOVIEPRINCESS [ DOTT ] COM
@kitycalifornia, I think it explores the idiocy & boredom of the 1950s suburbs.
While there are some universal themes in the story, it is set in a particular time and place, that had its own spirit. It was a very difficult moment in the history of the American family, partly because of the war and also how people were struggling to define what the suburbs were going to be. There was tremendous pressure to conform.
Things aren't nearly as bad now as they were then.
The cookie cutter houses and mundane careers are still alive and well. Sorry Eye, I don't see how things are better, aside for America being a bit more liberal socially. We have a lot to learn from our European Counterparts. Best.
As an 108 year old, you really ought to know what a HUGE difference "more liberal socially" makes.
But if you don't, just ask any black person over 60 whether things are better now. Or any woman who got pregnant out of wedlock back then. Or anyone victimized by domestic abuse or rape. Or any homosexual. Or anyone accused of being communist. Or any Hispanic who had wanted to be a manager in a bank. Or any Jewish person who attended college. Or even the regular people who lived in suburbia...
@bellydancingdream - True, everything always depends. Everything is defined by sensitive dependence on changing conditions. So if you want to make a point, I'd be interested to hear the specifics.
@EyeLean5280 so you think humans are biologically dependent, as course? or more affected by changing social conditions? My point is, i don't think this is isolated to the period in which it was written/set, people can still make parallels, at any time.
@bellydancingdream Biologically dependent upon what? Air? Sure. Suburbia? Of course not. Each other? Mostly yes. How much are we affected by changing social conditions? I think that depends on the individual. I know I was happier before Reagan was president (but then again, I was pretty young at the time and that in itself can induce happiness).
We're going to have to agree to disagree as regards the book/film. I see them as definitely about a certain time & place.
@EyeLean5280 You focus a great deal on your personal views rather than a collective experience or the variables of them as individuals. Nostaligia is fine but things have wider contexts and people only learn by being open to individuals perspectives, attidues and experiences. The background and decision to produce this film is well documented. Many people have issues dealing with the parameters, similarly with Green or Miller. I haven't a fixed opinion in the widest sense.
Leo, most amazing, brilliant actor on the planet is again just that in this film, he and Winslet are captivating..20 years of Dicaprio admiration still going strong, one wish - more movies w/him in them please!!!
What makes this film and novel brilliant is the fact that so many can relate to this, whether you live in the suburbs, or the city, or a trailer, is that many go through a melancholy life. We feel trapped, we regret, we constantly wonder "what if", and we blame. We blame another for the choices we took on impulse with no thought on the possible outcomes.
After watching this trailer who would ever want to watch this?
So depressing!

I read Matt Damon was considered for Leo's role. Anybody think that would've diminished the quality of the movie?

a perfect example of people not being grateful for what they have, life isn't perfect for anyone, but why for a second, can't we just be content with the good we have and stop being dissatisfied with everything, they were responsible for their own misery and created their own problems,
midojaix87 1 year ago
@midojaix87

I love this film and the fact that explores the idiocy and bordem of the American Society. Long live Authenticity!
kitycalifornia 2 years ago
@kitycalifornia, I think it explores the idiocy & boredom of the 1950s suburbs.
While there are some universal themes in the story, it is set in a particular time and place, that had its own spirit. It was a very difficult moment in the history of the American family, partly because of the war and also how people were struggling to define what the suburbs were going to be. There was tremendous pressure to conform.
Things aren't nearly as bad now as they were then.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
The cookie cutter houses and mundane careers are still alive and well. Sorry Eye, I don't see how things are better, aside for America being a bit more liberal socially. We have a lot to learn from our European Counterparts. Best.
kitycalifornia 2 years ago 2
As an 108 year old, you really ought to know what a HUGE difference "more liberal socially" makes.
But if you don't, just ask any black person over 60 whether things are better now. Or any woman who got pregnant out of wedlock back then. Or anyone victimized by domestic abuse or rape. Or any homosexual. Or anyone accused of being communist. Or any Hispanic who had wanted to be a manager in a bank. Or any Jewish person who attended college. Or even the regular people who lived in suburbia...

@EyeLean5280 that depends.
bellydancingdream 1 month ago
@bellydancingdream - True, everything always depends. Everything is defined by sensitive dependence on changing conditions. So if you want to make a point, I'd be interested to hear the specifics.
EyeLean5280 1 month ago
@EyeLean5280 so you think humans are biologically dependent, as course? or more affected by changing social conditions? My point is, i don't think this is isolated to the period in which it was written/set, people can still make parallels, at any time.
bellydancingdream 1 month ago in playlist Films
@bellydancingdream Biologically dependent upon what? Air? Sure. Suburbia? Of course not. Each other? Mostly yes. How much are we affected by changing social conditions? I think that depends on the individual. I know I was happier before Reagan was president (but then again, I was pretty young at the time and that in itself can induce happiness).
We're going to have to agree to disagree as regards the book/film. I see them as definitely about a certain time & place.
EyeLean5280 1 month ago
@EyeLean5280 You focus a great deal on your personal views rather than a collective experience or the variables of them as individuals. Nostaligia is fine but things have wider contexts and people only learn by being open to individuals perspectives, attidues and experiences. The background and decision to produce this film is well documented. Many people have issues dealing with the parameters, similarly with Green or Miller. I haven't a fixed opinion in the widest sense.

This is a really good movie. Wow. The last 20 minutes are amaizing! And, the song in the trailer is also amaizing, Wild is the Wind by Nina Simone.

Leo, most amazing, brilliant actor on the planet is again just that in this film, he and Winslet are captivating..20 years of Dicaprio admiration still going strong, one wish - more movies w/him in them please!!!

what a teriffic movie and such a sad ending too-loved it.
lostpinguin 2 years ago
What makes this film and novel brilliant is the fact that so many can relate to this, whether you live in the suburbs, or the city, or a trailer, is that many go through a melancholy life. We feel trapped, we regret, we constantly wonder "what if", and we blame. We blame another for the choices we took on impulse with no thought on the possible outcomes.
