Lol, wouldn't America be awesome if the guys that went out and bought a handgun actually took training in a blade weapon? That would be pretty cool. :D
I am currently a Yellow-Belt-Green-Stripe in Tae-Kwon-Do (7th Gup), And my dad is teaching me to use a Katana, Shuriken, Staff, and I would like to use a Sai also. for a training sai, I am looking at solid black plastic. are they good? what would you reccomend?
@renegade78100 Get the best you can afford - plastic sai at the bottom, then aluminum ones, next steel but not hand-made, and finally handmade, especially from Shureido out of Okinawa, at the top.
@renegade78100 as a beginner, get whatever is cheapest, just make sure the weight is good. more weight = more muscletraining, but dont overdo it. I use steel, as a beginner, cuz i'm big n fairly strong. wouldnt reccomend it for a twelve year old (dunno how old/big u r)
i trained for 5 years with a pair of steel octagon (non-pointed) sai. they were excellent and then when I bought a nice pair from japan my hands were ready and could really control them, also they were lighter so the previous weight training was really good to make my hands have a lot of control. make sure you measure your forearm and choose an appropriate length. get steel ones, DO NOT GO PLASTIC. aluminum ones are too light
@dudejo No, he simply means go outside to do throwing, which is where they are when doing nage (throwing). If you always are "throwing outside", then what if they avoid in the opposite direction?
@hempev just a wanted to add this, you throw to the side like dudejo said, so as to hit them if they move, and what he was more trying to get across was to not throw the sai vertically but side ways so that the youk may pierce the foot if you miss with the hitting part.. hope that clarifies. As he said these arent normally ment for killing. They are mostly ment for pinning someone onto the ground via their foot. Lest you forget, Okinawa is on an island. (sandy....)
I do believe that he is referring to the thrower, not the target. Outside techniques set on same side of the body as the desired arm (think open hand slap); inside techniques set on the opposite side of the body as the desired arm (think back-hand slap). Throwing sais from the inside are more likely to throw them off target than from the outside.
Is any school of your kobudo style here in mexico? Currently I'm training karatedo shitoryu stylebut im not training with weapons...just elder senseis do that...i want to ask them for teaching but im afraid they say no...plz let me know if you have schools in Puebla Mexico thx a lot
Too bad you didn't have a place that taught kobudo - that would be "All Weapons, All the Time"! We learn how to make a karate fist, but all our attacks use something other than our body.
I really wish I could find a place to import some legitimate Sai, not low quality if you hear him knock the two sai together it makes this really crisp ringing sound I can't find anywhere that sells that kind of thing.
USMC, 1965. A guy traveling from Okinawa to Japan gave me a pair of black iron sai. They were crude and not chromed, appeared to have been wrought by a smith of sorts. I kept them because I was studying traditional karate in Japan. Years have past and the truth has emerged. I was give a pair of old Okinawan sias and did not know it at the time. Now I do. Heh, heh!!
I'm a girl and I usually consider that one. I know guys have it bad, but getting kicked in the er...down there, for a girl, ain't too pleasant either.
Well, I've had it done to me at a party. My guy friends were all getting drunk and were trying to pull some Jackass crotch shots, and guess who got mixed up in the crossfire?
No, but they don't have to be. They were carried but slipping under your obi, but never in a sheath, so a sharp point would not have worked with their usual usage. They were not meant for deadly force, but properly used, they could be.
My set of sai are actually rather sharp at the points. I noticed they are sharper than many of the ones I see for sale nowadays. It taught me fast to watch out when I pulled one arm back after a strike, the sharp prong stabbed me in the side of the gut. Bit of blood taught me not to work them that way ever again!
I suspect yours are not made in Okinawa. Those who make the sai not out of tradition but due to a market for them may not know all their history, and assume they are *suppose* to be sharp.
The ones I have I purchased back in the early 90's so I don't know. They fit the bill though for me, I like them and they are made of steel. The only thing I need to figure out is how I want to re-wrap them now.
I took off the chap wrapping on my first zai, a pair from China of aluminum with an anodized magenta coloring (yeah, ugly) and used epoxy to tightly wrap with hemp twine. The Shureido pair I got recently has nylon cord wrapped and epoxied on the same way.
Magenta? Cool. I have a pair I got from Century, and they're like...black with hexagonal handles. Thank you for posting these videos, by the way... Most schools around where I live won't teach us these things (Tonfa/Sai/etc) and are more into sparring (and BTW, I'm not that great at it) and I would like to know how to defend myself in other ways if I am unable to fight. Now that I know I can *throw* sais...well, now I know :)
I'm really glad I found these videos. We use sai reguarly at my dojo, but throwing techniques are not taught there. Our Kyoshi is very good at it, but he won't teach anyone, perhaps because of the danger involved.
Form follows function. Unless you're skilled with sai, you shouldn't even consider getting "cool ones." Just get some that fit you correctly, and learn on them. It's the same if you think a 4,000 dollar guitar will help you learn to play better.
Very true - these videos do not cover the finer (or sometimes very obvious) points which can only be seen by another person. It is useful to video yourself and watch in comparison to Shihan performing them. Even this misses things like weight distribution, breathing, etc.
is it possible to throw the sai from the handle rather than the tip? or are both sides possible for throwing?
toastytoast123 6 months ago
@toastytoast123 Both - it depends on the distance to the target and how many turns the sai takes in flight.

Interesting, the video said that it is more important to target outside of body, when... throwing/striking as opposed to the inside... why is that?
mrsarcastic1988 2 years ago
I don't remember that specifically, but some of his points are well beyond my abilities.

@hempev
i know it's kind of late to answer this comment but here goes anyway
would it make sense if he was saying to target outside the body in case the opponent tries to side-step?

@mrsarcastic1988 perhaps because the inside of the body is the most guarded? outside is usually left open? Thats my guess...
Jiphie 1 year ago
@mrsarcastic1988 I think he meant it is better to throw the sai "outdoors" as opposed to "indoors"..hence why the video cuts to outside.

You *can* throw them, but it's better to hold onto them - throwing is a distant attack and puts you at risk of losing it to the opponent!
