  • The most beatiful railway in the world. Projected and Built by Italy.

The old italians steam locomotives are still working

  • The Eritrean people are true heroes. Sod the NWO and their banks. Long Live independent Nation States. Long Live Eritrea and its people:-)))

  • I didn't realise the Eritrean people had reconstructed the whole route on their own. You will next construct links with Sudan & Ethiopia. Do it your way & go Electric when you can. Shows you are a clever capable people. you need no one and you must forever remain self reliant. Eritrea stand tall. You are a giant standing free.

  • These men need to train the apprentices that will form the skill base of Eritrean Railways. These men are truly remarkable and National Heroes.

  • Determined people build their own destiny on their own will power & know how.

  • More power to them, when they can't afford somebody to it for them. Do it your self! Awesome shows the virtues of hard work.

  • Well done ,a absolutely fantastic Documentary. very enjoyable .....thanks

  • Did you know that on YouTube, there is a section dedicated to Sardinia's narrow guage railroad that's being dismantled and or junked! If Eritrean's approached the Italians, I'll bet they could acquire some of those old trains and equippment if not for a cheap price but perhaps as a donation of Good will between the former colonial master and this newly emerged free nation.

  • poor eritrea or better called Ar Terra lool

  • Agame,

This is the Eritrea, your mother forgot to tell you about.

"By logic, the Nation of Eritrea should not exist. The independence fighters were outmanned, outgunned, abandoned or betrayed by every ally, ought never to have defeated Ethiopia in their 30 yrs long struggle. Their cause was hopeless. They won by force of character, a unity and determination so steely not all the modern armaments, super power support or economic superiority of Ethiopia could withstand it".

  • my deepest respect!

  • how much of the railway is completed now?

  • @GWR4079 I think it is done, i searched for it on google and many of the pics show that the thing is ready. And it looks pretty good, i am surprised to see how well they managed to rebuild the trains.

  • If we can rebuild this antique ancient Trains and railways with no help we can do anything!!!~X~!!!~O~!!!HA

  • Eritrea has a bright future ahead of them with this determination and attitude :)

  • If it is easier to keep the steam locomotives running then they should use them for as long as they wish to.

A diesel locomotive uses expensive oil and contains hundreds of parts, wheras a steam locomotive contains far less.

The major moving parts are on a larger scale & can be reconditioned locally.

The boiler is the heart of a steam locomotive. An aging boiler makes for expensive & specialised repairs that may be beyond local skills.

  • @NJPurling You are right. Steam locomotives are easier to maintain. From this, Eritrea can build the skills of its people completely from within.

  • You would think the outside world would reward such a hard working people, who ask to be taught how to fish but not handed the fish it self. God bless Eritrea

  • It is just a short matter of time before the people of this nation do the right & correct thing: Junk the steam locomotives.

That will be a pleasure to see, for the correct thing to do is junk, scrap, cut apart & melt the remaining steam locomotives!

  • it is still these days possible to get a steam as well as a steam train ride on this great rails. But it needs good planning and reservations. Diesel as well as Cole is very expensive and often hard to get. But the ride will be unforgetable. My movie I made with just the movie finction of a exilim1024 small camera.

I enjoyed your movie very much. What year did you take your pics?

    Regards werner

  • they should take the steam locomotives to strausburg, Pennsilvania, they can do anything with steam :)

  • they should have outside help for there trains a better economically functioning Africa is probably better for the world aswell.

  • Yes, I agree, a railway brings prosperity and stability to communities and allows trade for the better of all

  • Omega, While your good intentions ment well, trust me, the ONLY help Eritreans need from the "outside" world is to leave Eritreans alone to rebuildild their own homeland & chart their own destiny.

Far for too long, what Eritreans has gained from the "outside help" is war, death & destruction. Enough is enough.

ERITREA NEEDS NO PATRONAGE OF ANY KIND.

Eritreans liberated their homeland on their own terms & Eritreans are building their homeland on their own terms.

    Keep the "outside help" out.

  • I'm certain you're right. Western politicians, ours in the UK more than ever are "owned" by corporate interest groups. No "help" no hindrance.

  • GOIMB, Thank you for your understanding the "sinister design" of the Western world.

Remember, it has been 500 years since Europeans ventured out of their freezing cages, reaching the shores of Africa.

Ever since, Africa & Africans have been bleeding, ending up victims of Europe to the benefits of Europe.

After centuries of European exploitation of Africa, now, why do Eitreans need to seek Europe to build Eritrea, when Eritreans can do it on their own?

I say, Keep out siders out of Eritrea.

  • @BahreNeGash You are right in looking at yourselves to build your nation. There are sinister forces afoot here in my country as everywhere, it seems. That is why our army is occupying Iraq and Afghanistan. This disgusts me. I wish Eritrea all the Best in self teaching, construction and development. As to Railways, you would be wise to skip the diesel stage. When your railways have been expanded and you need to handle heavy traffic, you will electrify Straight from steam to electric traction.

  • @G0IMB

Thank you for your understanding & RESPECTING THE WILL OF THE ERITREAN PEOPLE, self reliance.

After 50 years of war & wanton destruction, the Eritreans have came a long way to rebuild the homeland they paid a very heavy price to liberate.

Therefore, one can see their achievements in overcoming ALL ODDS & rebuilding a destiny of INDEPENDENT NATION.

Once standing on solid ground, moving from one technology to the other ain't as difficult as RESURRECTING A NATION from the ashes of war.

  • @BahreNeGash Very Well Said

  • @Isochest

Thank you very much for your vote of confidence.

I wish there were more people of your kind, who appreciate the determination of a small nation, to stand on it's own grounds, with out having to scoop low to the bullies of the day, compromising & selling out the will of it's people.

Again, Thank you for your understanding.

  • True, but as he mentioned they simply cannot afford it. Amazing to see where the human will can take you though.

  • Atanas & G0IMB,

Thank you for your keen interest in Eritrean trains & railways.

While you may have a great heart in wanting to see the achievements of human endeavours, what Eritreans found out about those who calim to "help" is self-serving forgein politicians formenting wars & bleeding nations, which Eritrea happen to be one.

Therefore, Eritreans manged to liberate Eritrea on their own, as much as Eritreans have built back the train & railways, ALL, ON THEIR OWN!!!

  • The railway is now completed...

  • God bless Eritreans.

  • The world's sexiest country...

  • An excellent documentary about this tremendously ambitious project...5*

  • Thats quite an inspiring story.

  • I'm going to have to find out what happened next? A truly inspiring film! 5*

  • sory but is it not easy to work with the world for the benfit of eriteans people i know you doing good work with what you are doing but if we work with the world we will be faster to worth progres good luck

  • Steam engines!

  • THANKS TO TPLF !!!

  • adorably beautifull!

  • Beautiful!

  • Holy Shit, It's black Heihachi Mishima @ 9.44

  • This is quite amazing. For a war stricken country to put its effort into restoring its only railway line. Why not give them 2 modern American Re-gauged End cab switchers? That'd be a major upgrade from that 50+ year old SNCF switcher. They'll need new power soon.

  • This is a truly inspiring film. Forgive my ignorance but what has happened since?

  • Nice to see someone in Africa doing things for themself rather than demanding aid.

  • good luck ..

is the railway line completed now after so many years passed ?

  • "By logic, the Nation of Eritrea (pop. 3 million) should not exist. The secessionist province's independence fighters ought never to have defeated Ethiopia in their 30-year-long struggle. They were outmanned, outgunned, abandoned or betrayed by every ally; their cause was hopeless. They won by force of character, a unity and determination so steely not all the modern armaments, super power support or economic superiority of Ethiopia could withstand it".

  • La ferrovia è uno spettacolo, vero orgoglio di noi italiani e e voi fratelli eritrei. Dio benedica i nostri paesi!

  • nothing make us eritreans so proud,to see, this elderly ppl work for their country and devoted to give the knowledg to the youngest.may god give long healthy life.Thank you great video!

  • The Eritrean people's liberation IMMORTAL forces that defeated 500,000 Ethiopian mercenary army, capturing ALL Ethiopian guns, arms & tanks, disarming Ethiopia to bare bones & arresting their Russian Generals, MARCHES ON TO BUILD NEW ERITREA.

Those who have sour grape swallowing their shameful defeat at the hands of Eritrea, can keep crying but won't help save their empty pride.

    Eritrea for ETERNITY!!!

  • God/Allah bless Eritreans,

It's gratifying to see grandfathers working hard, side by side with their grandchildren, to rebuild a vibrant nation that was destroyed by 50 years of war.

Having defeated all global & local odds, who dared to crash our will, determination & commitment for the independence of our homeland, Eritrea, WE CAN rebuild Eritrea on our own, again.

Yes my people, WE CAN DO IT ON OUR OWN.

  • You moron!! You are making yourself like stupid by making thousands of similar comments in all over youtube. If you really love the government like you are saying why you cant go there and do the national service you cowered idiot. So you could have witnessed the true colour of Sheabia like I did. They are bunches of corrupt, cruel, illiterate, selfish mafia gangsters.

  • wow..found out Gherri is actually: Ghebregziabher Lijam, half eritrean 46 year old dude who lives in Cali. He says "After having lost everything in life for epilepsy, it has been very hard to live with, over come & re-establish, the old life style I've been accustomed all my life." on his myspacedot com /myseizures account. Why would he spend his time calling other people subhumans and other names when he should be fighting this disease?I think he uses politics as an outlet for the pain he has

  • A nation can NOT be built by the crushing bombs of it's formidable enemies, but the devotion of it's people. Therefore, Eritrea's marches on "AGAINST, ALL ODDS!"

  • God/Allah bless Eritreans,

Yes my people, WE CAN DO IT ON OUR OWN.

  • As long as the tyrant president and sheabia regime are on power the country and our people will suffer more.

  • Amiche-Agame, Being Ethiopian why cry on Eritrean forums which won't help your starving Ethiopian mother in Tigray. At least Eritreans are working hard to rebuild their war-torn nation, what are you Ethiopians doing except for begging the world to feed you? Learn from Eritreans hard work & "can do" attitude, which you never learned from your parents. But, cry as you may, NO ONE STOPS ERITREANS FROM BUILDING THEIR OWN DESTINY. Don't you know that Eritreans defeated Ethiopia & liberated Eritrea?

  • My Goodness you should be ashamed of calling yourself an adult! You are just another brainless Sheabia. Unfortunately you are just a minoritynowadays majority of Eritreans have realised that the country is run by bunches of corrupt, dictator, illiterate, selfish gangster. LijamGerrie if you love your country why cant you go there and do national service. At least I was in Sawa in 2002. So dont tell me what goes on in Eritrea.

  • "OUR" people.........please understand that you are not doing your people justice by calling for the demise of the current administration. Our Country need stability so relax all the dictator talk and the let the country progress in this brief period of peace. Mr. Amiche

  • Best wishes to those proud workers from Eritrea!

I wish you all the best.

This is the way to do it!

I hope that many many tourists will visit your country. At least steam enthusiasts like me should visit your country to take some rides on your pretty railway and to see those nice steamlocos in action.

    Greetings from Germany

  • Determined people! :D

  • Great video: What is the distance between the rails (the "gauge")? In England, it's 1.3m approx.

  • I really want to visit this country and travel on the railway! Fantastic video!

  • To ethiojegna3 Watch at 00:52,05:08, 06:06, 08:16 what the Etihio left all over Eritrea 1990. I'am not wishing to the ethio ppl war and distraction; but you may be understand when you harvest what you saw.

I met one Italian man, he was so amaized by the Eritrean rebuilding railyway and now he is going to visit Eritrea.

You ethiojegna3 and your company are not wellcome to Eritrea.

  • Primitive animals?

Come on Ethiojegna3 you can come up with something better than that no? go back to the think tank you can do it!

You can't even say that with a strait face. But i'd guess we should submit to the western world, other rich countries, and become little puppets like you right?

  • hhahahahahhahahahhaha

    all your soldiers dissapeared....

  • its this kind of can-do attitude is such a fantastic and productive persective.

  • the railway track from Asmara to Massawa on the coast was completed a few years ago. it's already operational although it carries mainly tourists and steam train enthusiasts. there are plenty of clips on youtube showing the trains in operation.

  • amazing-i wish them all the best of luck..i wonder if anyone has an update video on the situation in 2008?

  • Good job my Habesha people hard work describes us well.

  • psssh

    please

    ahahahahhahah

    wow

prime example of a hypocrite, get out of here agame, eritreans can talk for them selves.

  • @ EsotericDesi

Why is this stupidity? The costs are less if you do it by yourself and so you can spend the rest for some other purpose. Much better then (like you said) pay other nations for help. It's better having a railway than don't.

What you said is very stupid because you only thought on the short-term in how to spend the money instead of the long-term. Think before you start talking.

  • Stupidity of the Eritrean people should not be praised... They can spend money by borrowing from IMF or some other nation and have a modern train network built for them... which will increase the prosperity of the region a hundred folds instantly... rather than driving 1930s trains in 21st century, at the top speed of 1 km/ph.

  • ohhh pls give me a break, look what is happening to the countries that borrowed money? They r on debt and added with the interest they can't pay it and they will never do. So u should be proud that a small and new country can do such a gre8 job with out any help than to sit there and make brainless comment.

  • Typical Ethiopian Mentaliy. Thats why you aint going no where.. did you hear what he said at the end. Teaching the whole world what can be done.

  • EsotericDesi, The problem with borrowing money is that it immediately becomes and addiction. People and countries that borrow money stay in debt forever.

  • These Eritreans should stop fighting the crap out of each other and go to India for help.... India operates WORLD's LARGEST RAILWAY NETWORK that transports over 6.5 billion passangers a year has been World's Largest since it began back in mid-1800s.

  • [1] It's good for them that they have world's largest railway network, but don't say they are modern. You're talking about that Eritrea must go ask Indians for help, but don't forget to say that India's trains aren't very different then those who're in Eritrea now. Isn't it that there happens many accidents in India with trains with many death and wounded?

  • [2] That is because India's railway isn't as modern as you are trying to tell here. It is big, but definitely not modern. So don't talk about trains from 1930 with 1 km/ph (which isn't true), because that's better then accidents with 100 death each time.

  • EsotericDesi, top speed of 1 km/h? Ask India for help? Please don't be stupid. Or if you are naturally stupid, please don't show it off.

  • I really love what these people stand for!

  • "The can do people of Eritrea".

That realy defines the Eritrean people.

No need to kneel down to beg to get fed.

Viva Eritrea and Eritreans. One day, the world will tell the truth about what went thru and what we are achieving.
