Where non-Japanese stars in Japan are concerned, I think "Dr. Death" Steve Williams deserves a big nod. The guy was a quick, intense, agile big man -- if not quite giant-sized one -- that brought a real sense of physicality to his matches. He and Hansen were well-matched in the ring, even if Hansen's wrestling chops weren't quite on the same level.
things that have changed since this 1st aired...(a)/(b) alex payne is a heel/hes partners w/ shane hagadorn as the hellians (i think ernie osiris is also a member)...& (c) lawrence is not here...he was an awesome panelist...he seemed 2 have knowledge of stuff w/o sounding like a brainiac &/or whatever...
i have heard that big japan has toned down the ultra-violent "shit" in its newest incarnation...& 2wards the end of its existence as "'fmw'/'wew'"...fmw was trying 2 tone their version of it...& emphasizing more 2wards "sports-entertainment"/"wwe-esque" stuff...
does any1 have anything 2 say about akebonos &/or ryoto hamas recent success in pro wrestling/puroresu...w/ akebono having tag & 6-man titles in ajpw & dg...& hama being (as of then recent pwi) ajpw triple crown titlehoder...?!?!?...
On the subject of shitty FMW wrestlers, what the hell is the deal with Matsunaga? I mean a lot of their wrestlers could actually wrestle a match that wasn't a barbed wire explosive death match or whatever, but I don't think I have EVER seen a Mastunaga match that doesn't end with him taking some sort of preposterous bump. I couldn't tell you what wrestling moves he even does. After the "holy shit" factor of a bloodied wrestler getting dunked into a pirahna tank wears off, there's nothing there.
The UWF and all its diaspora was awesome. Are awesome.
Even if you don't like shoot-style, you have to respect their skills if you think grappling is a worthwhile art at all. Volk Han, Kiyoshi Tamura, Masakatsu Funaki, Minoru Suzuki, Sakuraba...Yoshiaki Fujiwara....Minoru Tanaka...Shoichi Funaki....Tsuyoshi Khosaka...those men put on beautiful matches and showcased oft-times innovative techniques.
And they held back more on their submissions than some seem to think.
a great match from japan which i watched , Jushin thunder liger vs the great muta , that match has drama , story telling and man did muta heel it up it felt like a real fight at times , as a viewer how could you not root for liger in that match? and the fact that is two of japan's biggest names who had crossover success overseas makes it even more interesting

@WrestlingRoundtable u talk about Inoki participating in shoot fights, i remember a match where he was told by Karl Gotch to use a real submission on Bruno Sammartino, and EPIC FAIL, Sammartino powers out and beats down Inoki, practically scared Inoki enough to make him duck Sammartino the rest of that match.

Hey Eric, thanks for understanding my last comment, though I never ment any insult, I just have more respect for this art form for it to be misunderstood and treated as just "fake" human cock fighting. I can't wait for the hardcore wrestling talk. I've always loved hardcore wrestling and I'm sure New Jack will be added to the talk.
You know it's easy (ish ) to do rants like so many others do on youtube about why WCW were put out of business, but to discuss the art of wrestling and also another culture with respect is brilliant. I say this as someone who doesn't follow Puroresu. This is the finest video yet in my humble opinion.
Of course it's easy to get a $40 walmart webcam and dribble on a like a 40-year virgin in front of your wrestling DVDs(like it fuckin matters how many stars you think the opening of whatever show it is you're 'reviewing' is), but like you pointed out, we aspire to more than that, heh. Thanks very much for enjoying the show even if Puro isn't your cup of tea. Glad the hard work put into the show before & after is appreciated
My issue with fans of Puro is the same issue I have with any "die hard" fan of anything.
I'm not a fan of any ONE kind of music, I'm a fan of MUSIC. Music I like and the art of music. It frustrates me when so called "fans" chain themselves inherently to Puroresu.
"I love Puroresu!", like there's no shit puro. Just say "I like the Puro that I enjoy.".
Exactly ; which is why I wanted to point out the different directions Puro has taken with ultra violent, lucha, comedy, etc. leanings, aside from the 'strong style' people primarily associate with Puro.
One of the main things that I always like about your shows is the amount of research that Eric seems to put into whatever subject it is that you end up discussing.
A great moderator be very well educated on the topic, and Eric always comes across as being very well educated in every show. Yet another "5 Star Classic", guys! Great show!
Well thanks very much for the compliments! For a subject like this especially, I try to lay a good groundwork as a foundation to go forward on. It seems everyone really appreciates it and enjoys it, so I'm glad the preparation is paying off! I happen to do a lot of reading on Japanese history as it is anyway, so that went a long way in helping for this show, but I did a shitload of research for this show, heh. We all did, I think, but gotta captain the ship! Thanks a lot
I like puro but I don't follow it religiously. Although I would love to see some things puro does be done in feds like the WWE. The ring, time limits, streamers, etc. It'd all be great to make American wrestling "real" without making it MMA. It could be something the WWE could use without detracting from their "family entertainment" angle that they take pride in. But that's not what Vince wants, so it won't happen.
Also I favor Puroresu more than American wrestling, for the simple fact that American wrestling nowadays are too much about entertainment and money. Japanese wrestling is way more competitive and dedicated to the sport while at the same time entertaining the fans. I just think that the major American wrestling companies sometimes put too much in a story, superstar, and rivalry and these things tend to be repetitive.
I think he was very good! Again, 'underrated' should not be confused with 'underutilized' Taka, I think, most would admit was a good wrestler, but obviously wasn't used in WWF much beyond the spring of 98
Misawa vs. Kawada is what made me a puroresu fan. I started buying tapes right after seeing them wrestle for the triple crown. To me that rivalry was like the Japanese equivalent of the Flair vs. Steamboat matches.
Thanks a lot. 1. I intended to, but we ran out of time. We did touch upon it briefly in our talk on Women In Wrestling with Daizee Haze 2. huh? 3. American promotions aren't particularly interested in any of those guys for numerous reasons, and I'm sure(as dumb as this sounds) the language barrier is a big one, but style differences, Visas, "marketability"(which means they think Americans won't get in to the them, stupid& prejudiced as that also sounds), etc.
A subject for a future roundtable: Jackie Sato, The Bomb Angels, The Crush Gals, Monster Ripper, Aja Kong, Kyoko Inoue, Akira Hokuto, Jaguar Yokota (maybe the greatest woman wrestler ever--and that says a HELL of a lot) and of courses, Bull Nakano.
One thing about Puroresu I have to say, is that while the guys are amazing to watch, especially the ones who had successful runs on both sides of the Pacific like Muta, Chono, Liger, Tiger Mask, I don't put the great Japanese workers on the same level as the Americans because the Japanese work stiff. There's no point to working stiff because its not working when you legitimately hurt the other guy. Make me believe without trying to convince the guy your working with.
Understood. I'm not a big fan of 'strong style' either, but some of the guys - like the ones you mentioned - are great wrestlers no matter how you slice it
I think the guys I mentioned for the most part the exceptions to the rule. Muta was a Hiro Matsuda trainee so he basically learned to pull his punches like an American, Liger had runs in Stampede where he learned the same, Chono was a Thesz trainee, etc etc. The late Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada, those guys are all great at what they do, but I'd rate them higher if they didn't have to strike the guys in shoot/strong style to work. That's all.
I was blessed enough to see Kenta Kobashi live. He has real presents, I mean intense doesn't cover it. Now some will roll their eyes and point out his flaws but every wreslter has those. And his chops are a thing to behold live. Not a fan of the uber strong style but I respect their work. Great to broaden your horizons. I really enjoyed this debate and discussion. Thanks guys
England a few years ago maybe 4, he wrestled a tag match against Doug WIlliams, I think I have sent you a column about it called holding up the guard rail. Please let me know if I have not sent it yet. Kobashi made Doug's chest bleed and I mean bleed through chops, so intense. It was a great event in the Coventry sky dome called (don't quote me) universal uprising with Dee and Low Ki and Foley was there too. Not enough space to go on in detail lol. Later mate.
I don't recall getting that column, but send it again and we'll print it in the guest column section of our website! I had the pleasure of seeing Kobashi at, as you could have guessed, the Samoa Joe Vs. Kenta Kobashi match ROH put on. I'll never forget that day! Doug Williams is pretty awesome too, heh. Thanks for sharing!
Probably my favorite match of all time not the best but my favorite japanese match was an interpromotional North American/Japanese match. Sting representing WCW and The Great Muta from Japan. It might right before or after somebody correct me on this Sting defeated Flair for The WCW Title in 1990 and I think it was the first time I ever saw Muta wrestle; the first time I ever saw somebody spit mist in someone's eyes. Sting goes for the Stinger Splash. Muta spits him in the eyes for the cover.
The pwned the shit out of Hiro Hase, that's for sure, ha. I was watching a tag match they had in Japan against Vader and maybe Bigelow, holy fuck! Scott frankensteinered Vader! Amazing
I've loved Japanese wrestling since I was little....the respect factor it garners over there is great to watch....Liger, Dragon and Tiger Mask III put on some great matches in the early/mid 90's
If we could find a panel of people knowledgeable in Lucha history/wrestlers, absolutely, but unfortunately that's not going to be as easy as Puro. I'd do it the moment we had the chance, but it doesn't look likely
Greatest Japanese wrestler is Ultimo. Love Muta, but Dragon, come on how many Heavyweight titles for this guy? Stan Hansen, does he count? Bad mother f@cker
I love Japanese wrestling. From Muta and Liger to the new guys. I love watching American wrestling but watching another countries styles just intrigues me. So different different respect. And I love it thanks for doing this.
It's amazing, not really, how wwe tna fans see a wrestler do a move and they go "wow what an original move" and love them for that but don't realize that most of those moves were done by japanese wrestlers. Still, the credit it given to the american wrestlers.
Your point? To them it is an original move, and most of them have no reason to think that someone else invented it. So they have no reason to explore to see if it existed before hand.
The fact that most fans don't care about the history of wrestling and at the same time they call themselvs wrestling fans. I get sick of unoriginality getting praise that's my point!
There is a difference between not caring, and simply not knowing. Again some may not have the ability to access the history of a whole worlds worth of pro wrestling to find out that the RKO isn't an original move, or the GTS isn't an original move.
Yeah no ability, Internet, wrestling books, dvds, being a fan, ect. Not caring to know is a possiblity. I'm just saying, don't call yourself a fan, when all you wanna see is Cena's pussy ass "FU".
I understand both points ; fallenrosepetal is right that not all people may have the ability to access said information, but clipsryan is also right that most fans are too complacent in accepting whatever's fed to them instead of researching for themselves. Curiosity is a good thing! It's a shame more don't have it.
if you're going to do a simluated/theatrical/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it combat sport, at least try to make it look like legitimate athletic competition.
I've never watched Puroresu. I have seen a few of the wrestlers on ROH dvd's and YouTube. I do love the rings some of the federations have with those really cool turnbuckles.
My favorite Stan Hanson tidbit. The reason he was so stiff in the ring was because his eye sight was terrible. He couldn't pull his punches if he tried.
I never got Hayabusa. He was decent with a good look, but very sloppy. I think him breaking his neck was terrible and I hate to watch it, but seeing how he came close a few times before it couldn't be surprising. That doesn't make it any less terrible, but I guess I just not got into him.
understandable. i just thought that maybe he was worth noting when it comes to japanese pro wrestling because of the impact he had. but he was kinda sloppy, but a good many high spot guys tend to be.
Perhaps, and you're absolutely right - I'm glad you pointed him out because I'd hope the viewers of the show add their two cents to fill the gaps we missed.
DDT is hilarious

clipsryan 2 years ago
You know it's easy (ish ) to do rants like so many others do on youtube about why WCW were put out of business, but to discuss the art of wrestling and also another culture with respect is brilliant. I say this as someone who doesn't follow Puroresu. This is the finest video yet in my humble opinion.
TheWrestlingLantern 2 years ago 7

Great show guys, again. Thoroughly enjoy it.
PaidYouOff 2 years ago
Exactly ; which is why I wanted to point out the different directions Puro has taken with ultra violent, lucha, comedy, etc. leanings, aside from the 'strong style' people primarily associate with Puro.
Thanks very much!

Another brilliant video.
One of the main things that I always like about your shows is the amount of research that Eric seems to put into whatever subject it is that you end up discussing.
A great moderator be very well educated on the topic, and Eric always comes across as being very well educated in every show. Yet another "5 Star Classic", guys! Great show!
logan48227 2 years ago 4

AND HOLY CRAP. HOW DID YOU GET KENTA!?!?
MegaRed124x 2 years ago
Great video, my japanese wrestling knowledge is limited, so again my mind has been broadened. What do you think of bryan danielson signing with wwe?

I wonder if wwe will try to sign you? lol, with that 'awesome' idea at how to get Danielson over.
roh1234 2 years ago
Also I favor Puroresu more than American wrestling, for the simple fact that American wrestling nowadays are too much about entertainment and money. Japanese wrestling is way more competitive and dedicated to the sport while at the same time entertaining the fans. I just think that the major American wrestling companies sometimes put too much in a story, superstar, and rivalry and these things tend to be repetitive.
GeorgeStanleyTV 2 years ago
KENTA is fukkin amazing. He's definitely my fave japanese wrestler. I also like Misawa. He's Tiger suplexs are sick.
GeorgeStanleyTV 2 years ago
Favorites: Muta,Michinoku, KENTA, Misawa, Ultimo Dragon, Liger, Tiger Mask (the original), he who must not be mentioned.... and Dynamite Kid.
Frank15982 2 years ago
What do you think of Taka Michinoku? I think he is one of the most underrated wrestlers of alltime.
girthanthraclops 2 years ago
I think he was very good! Again, 'underrated' should not be confused with 'underutilized' Taka, I think, most would admit was a good wrestler, but obviously wasn't used in WWF much beyond the spring of 98

Misawa vs. Kawada is what made me a puroresu fan. I started buying tapes right after seeing them wrestle for the triple crown. To me that rivalry was like the Japanese equivalent of the Flair vs. Steamboat matches.
ebbowman 2 years ago
I'm pretty much in the same boat, I loved the Kawada/Misawa matches from the 90s, and the Flair/Steamboat comparison is perfect!

Good show WR: Got Some Questions Guys
1) Why don't you's talk about Japanese Female Wrestling ?
2) What Japanese Productions you think so far
3) What you think about Japanese Wrestlers(like Masahiro Chono, Akira Raijin & Naofumi Yamamoto) Signing 4 Big American like WWE, ECW, WCW & TNA ?
gforcev2 2 years ago

Make me believe without trying to convince the guy your working with.
diamondman420 2 years ago
Understood. I'm not a big fan of 'strong style' either, but some of the guys - like the ones you mentioned - are great wrestlers no matter how you slice it
-E, Wrestling Roundtable
WrestlingRoundtable 2 years ago
I think the guys I mentioned for the most part the exceptions to the rule. Muta was a Hiro Matsuda trainee so he basically learned to pull his punches like an American, Liger had runs in Stampede where he learned the same, Chono was a Thesz trainee, etc etc. The late Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada, those guys are all great at what they do, but I'd rate them higher if they didn't have to strike the guys in shoot/strong style to work. That's all.
diamondman420 2 years ago
Chono is awesome

Muta, Misawa, Kobayashi, and the original Kaientai.
But, no mentions of Onita?!?! I hope he at least gets a call out on best hardcore wrestlers!

Thanks guys
TheWrestlingLantern 2 years ago 2
Thanks a lot for enjoying the show & adding to the discussion. Where/when did you see Kobashi live?
-E, Wrestling Roundtable
WrestlingRoundtable 2 years ago
England a few years ago maybe 4, he wrestled a tag match against Doug WIlliams, I think I have sent you a column about it called holding up the guard rail. Please let me know if I have not sent it yet. Kobashi made Doug's chest bleed and I mean bleed through chops, so intense. It was a great event in the Coventry sky dome called (don't quote me) universal uprising with Dee and Low Ki and Foley was there too. Not enough space to go on in detail lol. Later mate.
TheWrestlingLantern 2 years ago

It's amazing, not really, how wwe tna fans see a wrestler do a move and they go "wow what an original move" and love them for that but don't realize that most of those moves were done by japanese wrestlers. Still, the credit it given to the american wrestlers.
clipsryan 2 years ago
Your point? To them it is an original move, and most of them have no reason to think that someone else invented it. So they have no reason to explore to see if it existed before hand.
fallenrosepetal 2 years ago
The fact that most fans don't care about the history of wrestling and at the same time they call themselvs wrestling fans. I get sick of unoriginality getting praise that's my point!
clipsryan 2 years ago
There is a difference between not caring, and simply not knowing. Again some may not have the ability to access the history of a whole worlds worth of pro wrestling to find out that the RKO isn't an original move, or the GTS isn't an original move.
fallenrosepetal 2 years ago
Yeah no ability, Internet, wrestling books, dvds, being a fan, ect. Not caring to know is a possiblity. I'm just saying, don't call yourself a fan, when all you wanna see is Cena's pussy ass "FU".
clipsryan 2 years ago
I understand both points ; fallenrosepetal is right that not all people may have the ability to access said information, but clipsryan is also right that most fans are too complacent in accepting whatever's fed to them instead of researching for themselves. Curiosity is a good thing! It's a shame more don't have it.

DarkPascual 2 years ago
I never got Hayabusa. He was decent with a good look, but very sloppy. I think him breaking his neck was terrible and I hate to watch it, but seeing how he came close a few times before it couldn't be surprising. That doesn't make it any less terrible, but I guess I just not got into him.
