This is an argument I hear so many times, but if there were no breeders, then these beautiful breeds would be lost forever. Every cat/ dog would be a moggie/mutt. Now I love all cats and dogs, but I can still appreciate th beauty of a pure bred too.

@artistdeterminedmsv - It's fine to touch them. I touch every kitten right after it's born and every day thereafter. The mothers don't mind at all. But thanks for your concern.

@mannequins81 what mann says, it's usually common that the mothers will let someone they trust touch the kittens. they know they won't get hurt so it doesn't bother them. they're used to the scent. if its one they don't recognize then thats bad

While I would agree that shelter cats do need to be given a decent chance, there should also be a way to keep the original breeds going. Still...unless you want a specific breed, see a shelter.

Too bad more people don't just go to a shelter instead of going to a breeder. This world has soooooo many wonderful cats that get destroyed every day because nobody came to see them at the shelter :(

@MegaLolmann They do it because that is their policy. As more cats come in, the ones who have been at our local shelter (Southern CA) for 6 days without being adopted get put to sleep. Whole litters that are not independently feeding get put to sleep automatically upon arrival at the shelter unless the mother is with them, which is rare (because they are usually scared off by the animal control officer)

It is an atrocious problem that is not well known unless you have dealt with these shelters.

@nschenk I agree there are lots of kittens in shelters that make lovely pets, but it depends on what your looking for. We went to a shelter to look at cats and my husbands eyes swelled up and his cat allergy kicked in BIG TIME!!! We did a lot of research into different breeds that were better for people with allergies and we did NOT want a cat that shed a lot of hair. We ended up getting a Bengal from a local breeder and my husband has no problem with her at all.

Just so you know, it's better if you put them up for adoption when they're 8 weeks or older.

ditto. You should leave them untouched for at least a month or else the mother won't take care of them. Of course though the person is taking care of all of them but she can't lick their fur to give them baths and natural milk from the mother is always better than any formula for them. Cute nevertheless.
