  • someone told me that apparently, buddy was known to be an arrogant person. is this true?

  • Anyone notice his double bass tech? 1:05 watch his right hand.

  • without buddy their would be no john bonham etc etc.

  • Preach it Phil Ambros. No one did what he did as a drummer, bandleader, vaudeville performer, actor, singer, dancer, comedian. He endured the swing, bebop, rock n' roll, MTV generation and still was the top of the heap! Oh, one other thing, he was 67!!! when this was shot,... two years before he lost his fight to cancer in '87. Travis Barker!?! yeah, right, I'd love to see him try to play the Buddy Rich Big Band chart book night after night with this intensity at that age.

  • FOR ALL THE ASS HOLES WHO THINK THE ASS HOLE DRUMMERS OF TODAY CAN PLAY BETTER THEN MY BEST FRIEND BUDDY RICH ,AND NOT BECAUSE HE WAS MY FRIEND, HE WAS THE BEST AND STILL IS THE MASTER YES, PEOPLE SAY I PLAY LIKE HIM BUT NEVER WILL I BE HIM ?NEVER HE WAS MY TEACHER, SO TO ALL THE ASS HOLES REMEMBER BUDDY RICH WAS AND IS THE MASTER FOR US AND ALL TO COME,,MR DRUMS PHIL AMBROS

  • @MrDrumsPhilAmbros

    There is no comparison, Phil.

Past or present ....Buddy Rich is the best to ever sit behind a set of skins....BAR NONE.

  • Buddy is king!!!

  • If you go back and watch earlier clips of his solos when he was young, he relied mostly on speed, where here, in his 60's, he really gets the drums "talking". Speed is still there.......but he is "playing" them here! Note how he carries the West Side theme into the solo after the brass sits down. Extremely talented individual. One we will probably never see the likes of for a looooong time.

  • amazing...makes me rethink my love for max roach, lol, both are fucking amazing

  • @southernbrooklyngal i think you mean buddy roache not max roache dumb ass have you ever herd of a guy who plays for blink named travis barker he is 1 of the best young drummers today dude

  • @4against1 nah you are the dumb ass if you don't know drummer max roach, asshole, fuck travis "overrated" barker, learn about music before you talk shit

  • OMFG!!

  • Neil Peart is and will forever be my favorite drummer, but I definitely know that Rich is the best drummer of all time and was more-than-likely Peart's influence.

  • Buddy Rich is such a dirty bitch, RESPECT!!!!

  • Buddy was the best!!

  • Old School guys; I'm with you man!!

Those fucking guys haven't a clue as to how to rate a drummer.

Travis Barker my ass..he shouldn't even be mentioned along side Buddy Rich..

Old School..there is no subsitute..anyone learning drums can do triplets, look grubby and have flare; that seems to be today's top priority in modern drumming.

  • I'm the jazz trombonist sitting right next to Buddy!! Watching this brought back some great memories!!

  • How The Fuck Do You Yawn At That?!?!?! 1:21

  • Don't Worry Everyone Its A Okay To get A Boner From This

  • Umm.... Wow. That's all I can say. Just fucking wow.

  • @chuckiesfest21 What are you blind and watched 2 seconds of the video? He just doesn't hit the snare. You should watch the whole video and find out that the he hits every part of the fucking drumset. Go fucking listen to your cheap green day and blink 182. You don't shit about him. He does faster rolls with his left hand than you could with both. Get out of here you 10 year old troll.

  • what is this ? i can only hear snare ... fak this he have no rights to be famous. vintage people suck

  • Buddy Rich, gives me chills!! WOW

  • @Howardsternswife He played so well until the day he died. Buddy refused to let age get in the way of his drumming. He's a true legend.

  • His talent has blinded me to what must be the worst rug I have ever seen.

  • WHO IS THE MOTHER FUCKING NOOB THAT IS TALKING ABOUT AN OVERRATED NOOB FAGGOT DRUMMER IN HERE?

  • fuck off travis barker is a fucking drum god

  • @4against1 YEA TRAVIS BARKER IS THE SHIT, HE PLAYS WITH HORRIBLE TECHNIQUE AND A OVERPLAYED GENRE

    he look cute thou....

  • Comment removed

  • y is everyone talkin about travis barker but no one is talkin about keith moon or john bonham or neil peart

  • there are a lot of great drummers these days, but not many have the magic that buddy had. truly an unique drummer.

  • I saw Buddy live on his last tour of the UK when i was 15; I've also seen Neil Peart live about 3 years ago.

I like both drummers; but Buddy was just better in that he was so fluid and fast.

I've seen a video of Travis Barker; It was pretty boring I'm sorry to say in my opinion he is just a pop drummer - not even in the same class as the other two... he had a good light show though... ;)

  • "good call dude ofcorse travis can own this guy" Move along troll. Everyone knows the only thing Barker can own of Rich, is a pair of Buddy's sticks he bought on ebay.

  • ""dude get real travis can smash this old man in a fucking drum off this guy cant last 15 seconds with travis""

Barker plays in a band . Buddy WAS the band

  • @liveinky2 good call dude ofcorse travis can own this guy you know what you are talking about dude this guys just a fucking snair player travis is more of a set player dude

  • @Travisbarker4prez Even if buddy was "just a snare player" He is more talented with JUST a snare drum, then Barker will ever be with 10 kits. Travis Barker would bitch slap you for even referencing his name in the same sentence as buddy rich.

  • Everything about his playing is incredible. His snare work, cymbals, rims...the entire kit. Incredible.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • "I prefer Jo Jo Mayer", "Neil Peart is better" and finally "Travis Barker brings a whole new level of sportsmanship and flair to drumming."

To all those who made those comments, and many more, where the fuck do you think these guys got their influences from? Buddy, Gene, Philly Jo, Joe Morello etc.

Maybe some of your guys have progressed and taken drumming to another level, but you can always trace their drumming roots back to the old school guys.

    Take a history lesson morons!!!!

  • There is nobody, and I mean NOBODY technically better than Buddy Rich. To me, he got better with age.

  • @drums4hire Lest we forget the original master that was Buddies idol, Papa Joe Jones.

  • @drums4hire Lest we forget the original master that was Buddys idol, Papa Joe Jones.

  • @drums4hire the best drummer of all time are probably jazz drummers or the one o get influenced by them...

  • @drums4hire Not only that....they're out of their fucking mind's! Travis is a good drummer, not great, Neil idolizes Buddy and would be the first to say he doesn't have anything near the natural skill, fast hands or most importantly..... feel! Jo Jo is amazing and reminds me a lot of Buddy and truly one of the greats! As is Whekl, Caliauta, Chambers, Jimbo, Gadd and so many other drummers famous for being so, not just because they're in a flavor of the day 'Pop Band'.

  • Why are Buddy Rich and Neil Peart always better than Travis Barker? They never delved into hip-hop. Boom.

  • i wonder if drummers like stuart cpoeland or billy cobham shit thier pants when they see these vidios

  • My music professor was playing the trumpet with Buddy that day. He's basically obscured by Buddy the whole time but you can see if you know who to look for. I'm so envious of the fact that he not only got to see him play but actually played with him.

  • I had the honor of being front row, maybe 20 feet away from him at a small venue here in Ohio, I think it was '79 or '80, amazing, simply amazing.

  • the greatest drummer of all time ...

who has complete mastery over the instrument??

    Rich.

  • Ask any rudimental drummers about Travis Barker, and they'll probably have this response: "Who?".

  • You do realize all the travis Barker guys are trolling. Did you think it was coincidence that almost every drum video has Barker comments in it?

  • If you want to know just how good Buddy really was, just ask ANY established drummer today what they think of him... Without question one of the best drummers EVER! Hell, one of the best MUSICIANS ever!

  • Like it or not Mr Rich was is , were,& be 4ever ,one of the best player, composer and highest reference point in drumming ,and music history EVER . Get ejucated morons.(xcuse my poor english).!!!!

  • @BigBoiJC

    Ha, ha!

    Good one!

  • my dick is bigger than your dick NAnAnANa

  • here you kids go again 'travis barker is better' Ignore it, simple, and lead a better life

  • Best drummer I ever saw live by far and I have seen many and his band did not suck Jazz rules

  • Neil Peart is better then buddy now :(

  • @confucheese Meh, I prefer Jojo Mayer to both.

  • Buddy looks robust and beefy here. when i saw him not too long before he passed, he was very thin and sickly looking. but man, all the same, he still thundered like Zeus!

  • I wonder what he would have been like on the double kick.

  • I can do that...

First i need 15 Red Bulls and 10 ounces of coke......

  • Travis himself will tell you that Rich was the man!

  • @JoeJacari From what I see in this post, your argument is too dependent on society in general; "panties fly on stage" for Travis Barker and not Buddy Rich because that wasn't a social norm nor was it really acceptable back then. Now, however, it's common as we as a general society have less care for ourselves. And your first paragraph implies that Rich was the king when his day and age was around; that being said, once this blows over, Barker will be nothing again by your standards.

  • @travisBrulzz LOL.

  • @travisBrulzz why? I listen to drummers who have more drumming talent in their little toe than travis does in his whole body.

  • @JoeJacari if Travis is king, then woe to his kingdom.

  • i hope buds got warrenty on them drumsticks

  • @JoeJacari You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Rich incorporated the whole kit into his solos on a regular basis. Just search for his performance on The Muppet Show where he has a drum battle with Animal if you want the easiest and quickest example to find.

We're not stuck in the 80s just because we love Buddy Rich. There is still no one to this day that can match his sheer power, speed, groove, feel and technique, AND lead some of the greatest bands to ever exist in music.

  • @JoeJacari Travis Barker is a circus performance, which is fine in and of itself. It's a completely different form of entertainment and there's no point in comparing it to Buddy Rich, or jazz in general for that matter. It's not just about his solo. Every musician in this kind of music gets his or her solo spot, so why do you think Buddy is hogging the stage when he takes his solo? Seems to me Barker is the one being the hog in that scenario. I think you simply don't get it, but that's okay.

  • @JoeJacari travis is garbage compared to todays drummers anyways. Buddy is the BEST. EVER. but today, there are SOOO many better drummers. heres a few.

Mike Portnoy, The REV (even though hes dead, RIP), Lars Ulrich, Neil Peart, Shawn Drover, Robb Reiner, Nicko McBrain, Jeff Bowders, and SOOOOO much more. and if u still think ANY of those drummers are better then Buddy Rich, u obviously know NOTHING about drumming.

  • I say we all go on all of travis barkers shitty videos and post a bunch of comments saying how he sucks and buddy destroys him, see how those travis fanboys like it.

  • This dude's OK. Travis Barker brings a whole new level of sportsmanship and flair to drumming.

I only wish Buddy were around to see he legacy handed over to Travis Barker and the new guard of super modern enduro-type drummers that add existing technologies a and advances in drum technique to an already established baseline of jazz and rock standards.

Fine. Let Travis Barker ascend the highest pinnacle and steps of the great pyramids of history's best drummers with history as his witness.

  • @JoeJacari Are you serious? ''This dude's OK.'' What!? You're talking about Buddy Rich man. Travis Barker can rage hard and (especially) fast on his drum all day and flair (flair!?) but it's not with Blink 182 or any other pop commercial kinda stuff that he's making history of music. Nobody will care about those money making teenage band in 50 years, but Budy Rich made classics at music that people care. Pop (which includes punk and rock) is just instant money making industry. You must be joking

  • @kkitkatsuprem epic fail dude travis barker is the king of the fucking drums maybe you should read up on new drummers and not just blindly worshep theise dinosors from the early 80s or something i bet you still were loafers and white undies what a dumbass

  • @travisBrulzz Lol oh my god you are rejectin every parcel of history if I understan now. No mater if this guy OWNED his drum, it isnt imprtant to you because its sooo old, meh, 80s, what the fuck? So Bach was retarded to write music (and write history) in 1700s. Nobody care also about Miles Davis. And those guys who didnt forged pop music, you know, um.. the Beatles? Nobody care about that becase they were all SO retarded, after all, they didnt had Travis Barker's ''flair and sportsmanship''

  • @travisBrulzz Maybe I wouldn't think you are a blind Travis' fanboy punk-rock addict and intelligible music ignorant if you didn't had ''travisBrulzz'' as a nickname.....

  • As always, an incredible performance by Buddy.

Thanks to drums4hire for the upload.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • OH MY GOD!!!!

    I SHIT MY PANTS !! :D

  • buddy is actually more precise that midi ( serial communication) lol : )

  • Roughly 3:50 til the end = AFDSBWNWGN. So fast, so fast....

  • best drummer there ever was.

  • travis should do a reverence to buddy, mmmmm well he dont deserves such honor

  • wtf

    whos travis barker ???i

    lol

i know who that dick-head is

  • I love how I can't watch one single video of a drum solo, without someone mentioning Travis Barker. Seriously if people really hate him so much, don't listen to Blink 182 and don't watch his videos. I don't care for mexican food, but I don't order a burger and say "Man this burger is so much better than any burrito!" I don't know why people compare them either, it's all about playing music you enjoy and doing what you love. I didn't realize it was suddenly a contest.

  • @icame2dance1 ...and I like Whoppers better than Big Macs - but either one is PERFECT when I'm hungry! The only drumming contest that warrants any merit is the personal one - where each day you strive to out do what you did the day before and HOPE that someone notices enough to comment on it!

  • @HardRockDrummer666 I like big bac's better (though the new buck doubles are pretty damn amazing). But yeah music isn't about being the 'best' it's about doing your best.

  • The reason everyone likes Travis Barker is because his drumming, that he writes sounds awsome but still goes along with the song, AND he makes his beats look good by the way he plays it. Travis is a great drummer like it or not. But he still doesnt have the skill level as Buddy Rich

  • What's wrong with Travis Barker fanboys? Seriously, I'm 15 and know that Buddy Rich wasn't "some old guy", he was, is and always will be the most influential and talented drummers to grace the earth. He made drumming what it is today, if there was no Buddy, there would be no Barker.

  • HOLY FUCK

  • If any drummer is younger than Buddy and myself (68), and they're still doing rim shots....You can bet that they are standing on Buddy's shoulders, no matter how good they are!!!

  • He was born in 1917... on wikipedia it says he has been active 1919-1987. It also says he has been playing drums since he was 18 months old.

  • Damn, to be almost 70 years old here and still that fast, Buddy was incredible.

  • I can't understand this obsession some people seem to have with Travis Barker, I guess I'd better go check out his stuff before i make any conclusions.lol.

  • Traditional grip is so damn hard to rock out on, you can break your fingers extremely easy; especially how hard he plays.

  • even though he is old, he's so Effin' fast! =D

  • Good lord... I saw him twice: in '83 (Cleveland; the best one of the two: made me cry when he did the cymbal thing (that he also does here) it was so heavy...) and in '86 in New Haven right before he died. Say what you want about him being a prick (and he ~was~ one, tho' I love the 'bus tapes' as much as anybody ;): the simple fact is that he killed the shit...

  • MY IDOL!!!

    Travis Barker is bomb,

    but compared to Buddy well,

    he's thee sidekick(:

let's see travis play 2 years b4 his death

  • MY IDOL!!!

    Travis Barker is bomb,

    but compared to Buddy well,

    he's thee sidekick(:

  • Again! A Buddy Rich video with alot of Travis "shithead" Barker comments on it. Let's take a moment to think about how Buddy Rich would respond on the fact that people say that Travis is better or as good than him. Like everybody else he'd probably say: KISS MY MOTHERFUCKING DICK!

  • who the f**k is Travis?? Buddy and Gene RULE!!

  • Did Buddy memorize this solo or did he make something up every time?

  • @glancer27 Drums aren't a melodic instrument for starters, it's impossible to have a melodic structure on the drums unless of course they're tuned to some sort of modal scale. So while you may be defending Buddy Rich, you're doing it wrong, and making yourself look like an idiot.

  • @Megafoness false.

  • travis barker is the most mediocre drummer i've ever listened to

  • the bass player yawned LOL! poor bastard probably so tired already with buddys' drum solos (or the relentless touring) haha! well if i was the bass player i will never get tired of the man.

  • VIVA BUDDY!

  • I saw him play live in an intimate club setting around this time. The "thing" that struck me immediately was that his talent never faded. He continued to improve his technique over a very long career... always tweaking.

  • He's not even looking. Amazing. His arms and legs know where to go automatically. A natural.

  • Easy to see why Neil Peart cites him as an influence.... don't know how old Buddy was when he filmed this but he wipes the floor with almost any other drummer I can think of

  • Buddy is only 68 here..born in 1917

  • Imagine Buddy is 76 in this video!

  • love it, wish id found this video sooner

  • Simply incredible. I swear my heart stops beating and all I can do is stare in silence as he plays a drum solo...

  • im soo tired of seeing all these retards saying that travis is better than buddy clearly they dnt kno anything...buddy is a legend best drum player dead or alive point blank

  • @xXDkillaxX829 I couldn't agree with you more, Travis is shit compared to Buddy,

  • @xXDkillaxX829 WHATTTTTT? never heard that...but i'd probably punch a nigga if he said that.

  • @xXDkillaxX829 Travis Barker is a 35 year old man that started drumming in the 80's. Buddy Rich is a 91 year-old drummer that started drumming in the late 1910's. Who do you think is better? Well, by now probably Travis as far as speed, but Buddy Rich has at least triple the experience. I know buddy died 23 years ago, I'm just referring to him if he was still alive.

  • @xXDkillaxX829 I agree. I am one of travis' biggest fans period, but he is not the legend like Buddy Rich or Niel Peart. He will go down as one of the most popular drummers in history though because of his unique drive to branch off into more genres of music than almost any drummer. He is more than qualified as a great drummer, but as much as I hate to admit it, he is not qualified as a legend yet. Buddy, Peart, Krupa... those guys changed drumming forever. Travis just made it his own.

  • @blue44blink182 dude get real travis can smash this old man in a fucking drum off this guy cant last 15 seconds with travis what the fucking r u taking about dumbass

  • @brakatt two things: 1. check your grammar before you try to degrade another person you don't know and have no affiliation with, ... "what the fucking r u talking about"... makes you sound very unintelligent. 2. Why would you swear and yell at a complete stranger?

  • im pretty sure he was hitting more beats then we could hear its just sound cant travel that fast

  • those one-hand rolls at around 1:25 are just insane. respect!

  • Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer of all time, don't ever compare him to a tasteless pounder like Travis Barker

  • You're 15 years old - I've been playing for 30 years. I'M better than Travis Barker and I still have to catch up to Buddy's playing. Yes yes, I know, you think older people are dumb and don't know good music. But, is it possible you're not able to comprehend what Buddy is doing? What did you watch, ONE Buddy Rich video? You have no idea, kid. Maybe you ought to write Travis and ask him who he thinks is better - you'll be surprised.

  • then post a fucking video of u bein better than travis ashole talk is fucking cheap dude travis can wail on this guy coz all he plays are fucking snair solos that sound like shit travis is more of a groove drummer

  • No, kido, my talk isn't cheap. I have over 70 videos. I noticed you don't have any. Are you even a drummer? You didn't even spell "snare" correctly.

  • @glancer27 Hahaha, whatever!

  • @glancer27 I agree- Buddy is EVERYBODY's daddy.

  • @glancer27

    beautiful comment

    very true

  • Oh really? and what does Travis do better than Rich?

  • And if I were to ever compare Buddy to a drummer past his time, it would be Neil Peart of Danny Carey, drummers with a real sense of rhythm.

  • @glancer27 Danny?

  • i watched a ytavis barker vid and wtf!!!! It was friken boring, he didn't go fast or anything he just hitall the drums randomly!! R u people blind!!! Buddy rich is thegod of drumming travis barker probably isn't even in the top 30 best drummers..... U 13 year olds r crazy!!! Rofl I'm 14 =D

  • what he does @ 0:55 blows my mind... only Buddy

  • Oh yeah, I'm ABSOLUTELY sure he would. You don't know anything about drumming. And jazz takes so much more skill than punk. You don't know what you're talking about. Travis Barker doesn't play half as well as buddy did. Don't disgrace him by saying that.

  • @BLINK2BARKER stupid dont fuck ashole!! learn to listen. clown.

  • travis baker would probably puke out his insides at your comment, fucktard!

  • @BLINK2BARKER And i would like to see your face when Travis is destroyed

  • alot of guys that age cant get out of bed.... the man was undescribable

  • now that's talent that you don't see very often in music

  • in your face! a 70 year old man can out riff anybody on a single bass four piece drum kit! buddy was the greatest! the fifth tom was a table.

  • I still think it is hilarious how everyone in the band "had" to watch Buddy during his solo's. Great player, no doubt - but a major DB too...

  • @maynardwaltrip This is the comment I'd have to agree with most. Absolutely astounding player, but definitely has that "You guys can kiss my..." look the whole time.

  • @TheresAFuckingDuck

How was he was better? Explain to all of us.

  • Have you heard the song, "Dream On" by Aerosmith? Well, that's all about you. Lol!

  • @ manic, he aint the grandfather of drumming. He's the Lord Of Drumming.

  • Naw, Gene Krupa was.

  • This guy is the grand father of drumming.

  • travis is a marching band boy - can he even play without a tuba and some clarinets nearby?

  • AMAZING! Who even thinks to use their bass drum in this way?

  • Are most of his snare solos consist if triplits and accents??

  • FLAWLESS!!!!!

  • It's too bad Nick Rich is such a douchebag.

  • @TheLiesette is he any good? I saw him play in the re memorial concert but didn't really play anything amazing.

  • My personal top two favorites are John Bonham and Buddy Rich. Bonham used to be my #1 until I discovered Buddy Rich. I feel kind of guilty about it because Bonham was my favorite for years. I'm not a drummer though. I just go by what I hear and like what I like.

  • I'll check him out.

  • Oh, wait I know who he is. He's good. To me though, doesn't compare to Bonham or Rich. But no disrespect. There are a lot of good drummers out there.

  • @travisbarkerizdaman ya he make my ears bleed with his shittyness
