  • Shawn, once again awesome stuff. I finally figured out (with the help of my pro) that I was spinning out drastically because my hips were driving way to fast while my arms stayed behind. This opened up my shoulders at impact, huge slices or flippy pull hooks. Although I've watched this video multiple times, it finally clicked. Thinking "fast arms falling" helped me tremendously. Now I can use the arms to create speed and the hips to create leverage at impact. My SS jumped at least 10mph!

  • Your ideas about arm falling in front while the body turns are very effective. At 3:41 that's a "Moe Normanish" kind of action to me! Btw I think there's another effective procedure for the downswing. The point is that we imagine that the body starts unwinding hard from the top along with the arms. This way the torso has to stop and stall at - or ever before - impact, in order to allow the hands and arm to be released. What if we start the downswing with "pivot stall" + arm falling?

  • ok, I didn't watch all of your video. I see that maybe I am letting my arms fall behind my body.

  • I can do all this, but for some reason, I can't square the clubface. I am always holding the face open. Can't seem to stop, even though I know I am doing it!!

  • Hi,

very interesting is the position in 3:40 where hands are much more in front of the body than they were at address position.. how to continue from this position to meet the ball correctly? to get in front is quite easy. but what to do after that? thnx fof help!

  • thanks shawn now that the club is in front me the club clears easily and I can create more speed...

  • I had to go at it the other way around, I had re-train the hips to clear and stay back in order to make room for the arms.

  • best instructional videos on youtube (or anywhere else for that matter) great job shawn, keep up the good work.

    regards, from Tasmania, Aus :D

  • hey shawn, I had a real quick question about the "Plant fall", "Plant Fall"...i watched your tempo and timing videos and i was confused with when i plant the left foot in relation to the arms falling. My understanding is i plant the left foot first then let the arms fall .Is that correct? or the arms fall and the plant happens as a results of the arms falling? Thanks !!

  • Hey Shawn, my names Cole and I seem to take perfect practice swings the screw up when i go to hit the ball. Any ideas on what this might be? Cole.

  • shawn is this also for the driver or is the driver swing twerked a little? thanks

  • @TigerWoodsWorld Have a look at my "swing Plane Update; shawn clement" video and it will give you the details; great question! Shawn

  • Very, very informative, thank you!

  • For the record Shawn should have won that Golf Channel contest.. but Who would want people to actually get better. Heaven forbid Golf Channel risks people to stop watching because people actually learn the game.. but hey Martin Hall and Micheal Brees are RRRRRRUBISH!! Love you Shawn!!

  • Also, it is observable in several great players that there is a slight rearward fall of the club and arms.

I've just seen too many people who try to apply the "in front of" thing end up like "tammywiseman" (above), getting too steep, outside, and over the top.

Also, while it's true that crowding the swing with a too-inside move on the backswing can cause an over-the-top move to compensate, it's also true that players get OTT by being too rotary and/or torso-and-hip-oriented.

  • I do object somewhat to the popular "in front" theory of the last 20 years or so. Factually, the arms and club do move across the torso and to the side of it in the backswing, if the reference point is the turned torso; or, if you prefer, the club is definitely behind the head and neck. I've seen amateurs tie themselves in knots trying to keep the club in line with the middle of the "front" of the torso, as if they were supposed to fight the natural swinging motion of the arms and club.

  • For more on "stone-skipping," check Faldo's "Tips & Drills" vid. Also, check H. Penick's "magic move" and his slow-mo drill for it--shifting gently to the lead side while moving the arms and club partway down, slowly, with no spinning of the shoulders (the shoulders only responding).

The "push" an assist to momentum is so, so right. What happens when you try to apply power too suddenly, extremely, or violently, outside the bounds of a swinging motion, when you're pushing somebody on a swing?

  • This video made me flush every iron perfectly today .. didnt top or catch one fat all day.. THANKS ALOT !!!!

  • Wow this has transformed my game, no getting jammed up and hooking anymore! Thanks Shawn

  • GREEN LIGHT ON ! ! ! i got it! my tip is to let the arms fall into your body. do this for a couple of times. but than right before the crash /split second/ turn the body away . BINGO ! and now there is massive catapult power created by hip and body turn. AM I RIGHT :?? that feel is fantastic !

  • Hi Shawn, Is it possible to have to swing the arms to fast that you end up casting the club and therefore you lose the Lag in the golf swing?By the way Great videos!!!

  • Hi Shawn!! Im from Portugal and i want to say how much my swing is improving day by day due to your videos.

    All the best for you!

    Luís

  • Shawn:Why does it seem so much easier to get into the "skipping the stone position" when using just the right arm ?

  • @mckyj That would be a nice subject of discussion for my forum! Please go ahead and register and open a thread and I will chime in at some point; All the best! Shawn

  • @clemshaw Shawn, when im swinging with my arms in front, it seems like i have developed an "outside" release to the ball. I think my hands are on the outside of ball and not coming "inside" of the ball and im really cutting across it. Mostly with my driver??

  • @TAMMYWISEMAN 2 things to respond for this: See "weak grip or strong grip; shawn clement" and "ridiculously easy; shawn clement" to make sure you have the right focus; and I would seriously get my dvd series as there are some things missing in your fundamental understanding of the swing and the dvds will atke you through in priority sequence to make sure all the important pieces of your puzzle are in place; All the best! Shawn

  • @clemshaw hey shawn; I am an avid golfer on my high school team...I cant figure out to compress the ball(and my body) on my down swing..when i try i hit it thin or thick...

  • @TAMMYWISEMAN

    Did it get better?

  • @emncaity Its is a bit better. but reading your comments here, To achieve the goals i have set.. I have to cure the cancer of OTT Early Release etc.. No matter how much i try i cannot comprehend starting my downswing "ground up" i cant get the kinetics of an independent lower body..Ive tried to fix an inside takeaway but its against my natural feel.. I just cant get myself to have a body hit.. i dont see how it has power.. so im set in my doxy of dowswinging with my arms..

  • @emncaity When i try to "let go" and become target oriented.. it seems to eccentuate my faults.so i really have a hard time giving up control of my swing.. I have a coach that i see and he teaches me body hit and to let go. i try to learn my self and have him help with ideas and questions i have..im low 80's for only 18 to 27 holes /week. ik im much better. 74 is my best.. ive been hammering my putting so maybe im just being lame about it all???

  • Shawn, I try to make my arms fall but must be coming over the top cause iron shots start left and go further left. Any suggestions? Love all the videos.

  • @MsBrennan18 You Bet! Go and see my "ridiculously easy; shawn clement" part 1 and 2 videos; you will see that it is not the technique that you employ but the focus you are using; see "how to focus" shawn clement" part 1 and 2 as well;

    Shawn

  • Shawn, this technique works great with my irons. I now have a slightly lower, piercing trajectory. However my driver is now too low. The same falling of the arms past the ball with the arm/hands is not releasing the driver with the upper cut I need to crush it. Should i release a little different with driver so i don't hit so down on it like an iron? Peter

  • @puzio61 Have a look at my "Rip The Driver" video; which will help you confirm the right set-up and ball position for your driver; Shawn

  • Shawn, Great tip. How do you get the radius/ulna (forearm) to drop to the ideal impact position? Just relax the arms and they'll arrive there on their own? I think I might "hold on" too long 'cuz I'm holding on to my club like it's a motocross bike or something. If you look @ Hogan's impact position and about 3/4 the way of the follow through, you'll see his arms are very close to his torso, especially right humerus. I can't seem to get it right. Any tips? Thanks :-)

  • @spinetilt You don't!! :) Not your job!! Hogan was an expert at finding the target with his action; and that is where the focus needs to be; see "#1 most popular teacher on YT; ridiculously easy part 1 and part 2" videos; also the " " " ";how to Focus" videos

You should also come check out my forum; lots of help and great feedback for this and other issues; right there on my website! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

I had written to you maybe about a year ago and have been following your videos, almost all of them. And the results have been nothing but spectacular. I have uploaded my swing video from a round a month ago. I dont think I am done learning so will keep working on improving my game. Please check my swing videos when you find time and have patience. Please dont mind the title of my videos !! Just that I dont think the swing looks beautiful !!!!

    Cheers,

    Diffonyahoo

  • @diffonyahoo I would go onto my forum and upload it there! You will have a lot of fun with the guys; we are very civil and ready to help! Shawn

  • On a previous video you said to set your weight on the downswing with your back to the ball.Is this still applicable to this drill or was that for another problem?

  • Hi Shawn ... I really like your style of coomunicating. You could have been a great orator ... or professor ... or business speaker / consultant. Love this skipping the stone analogy .. can't wait to go try this new swing key. But then again .. like an automative junk yard I've got acres and acres of them turning to rust. I think i have 25 different swings and I have to go through all of them to see which one works for that day.

  • @directorwvp2 There is a very important video that you need to look at called" #1 most popular teacher on YT; ridiculously easy part 1 and part " Take the action of the skip, or snap, or twirl but make sure that you are sending it to a specific target and not the ball; and let this be the only focus so that the target is always in your mind. You should come chat with us on my forum as well; lots of feedback and help there for you! Shawn

  • I give up! I'm just gonna take his advice here and start throwing the ball around the friggn golf course like skipping stone. Then ... after playing 100 rounds throwing the ball around the golf course with this skipping a stone tossing technique ... then pick up the sticks and start playing again.

  • Shawn, your explanations and teachings are concise and detailed. Really Love them. Ive learnt so much from them. What is superb is that you show what is NOT to be done too - giving your explanations far more depth and furthering our understanding. Tq so much.

  • thanks Shawn for some really great tips here! I'm off to go practice!

  • thank you for you reply to my questions. I have watched your videos and gone and practised what you say in your videos. So far so good. It's an unusual almost out of control feeling when you swing, yet most iron shots went dead straight or a little left.

Is the same technique used for the fairway woods and driver?

  • Hi Shawn

I have watched the Arms Falling video so many times and still can't really get my hands to let the body do the work. Years of bad habits take a while to get rid of I guess.

Any tips to get the brain to stop the hands from taking over in the downswing?

    regards

    Ben

  • @barbben1 Yes; I have uploaded a great series of videos for this: see "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn", "golf pro lesson stop crashing" and "golf pro lesson top view of swing"; Shawn

  • so turning fo the body brings the arm unit down from the top of the swing to the almost paralel to the ground without any arm movement?

  • @CosmicSPC I want you to go check out another video that expands on this: "Golf Pro lesson stop crashing" and the drill that goes with that is "Golf Pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn"

    Shawn

  • Shawn, Ernie Els Swing tip (youtube) has a tip of creating "the Box" and then keeping the box. Have you seen this tip and what do you think of it.? Also do you have a golf academy that you run?

  • @jkiene I think I know which one you mean; if it has to do with the arm unit; I have a video "golf pro lesson fine tuning arm motion plane" that explains something similar; and yes, we have a fine golf academy here in Richmond Hill Ontario, just 20 minutes from the Toronto Pierson Airport! I have 5 full time teachers on my team and they are all fabulous! Shawn

  • Hi Sean. Your videos are excellent and we are privaleged to be able to watch them. This action has been a the key for me strinking the ball crisply and hitting the ball before the ground. I had a problem of taking the club outside of the swingplane on the outside. It will take a lot of practice but you have really helped Sean. Thanks. Alastair, UK

  • What a great explanation and demonstration of getting your arms to drop down into the slot and out in front of you. I was seriously having trouble with my right elbow being stuck on my right hip. Thanks to this video that is no longer.

  • Shawn, Another quickie. I used to hit from the top with a big over the top move. I now swing with the lower body starting transition-as you demonstrate. BUT I find my hands still have a little bit of that OTT move-kind of a muscle memory thing! Is there any way to learn to drop on plane-I guess ideally I want a slightly shallower dwonswing plane than backlswing, currently it is a little steeper. The feet together constant motion swining helps a little-any better ideas?

  • A big thank you Shawn. I looked at this video this morning "before going out to play". I was making the mistake of holding the right elbow tight into the right side of my body on the downswing. I struck the ball much better as a result of watching this video. Thanks again

  • Shawn,

You do a great job explaining the start of the downswing and how to clear the hips, this is definitely a lot easier than trying to turn your help forcefully in advance and then worry about your arms/hands/club coming through. The only thing I seem to be missing is: Once your arms fall down plane and get ahead of the ball so that you can compress it, what is the move that squares the clubface at impace. Do you turn your left hand down? Any help is appreciated as I struggle with this!

  • Mr. Clement,

First, thank you for your videos. They have helped me quite a bit over the last year, and I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate what you have done for me and the other viewers. My question is about passive arms. Does your arms and shoulders go along for a ride? I guess I am just wondering what body part to swing with as well. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

  • @StephenIII83 You are welcome; see the reply I gave to "Kuchakhtar"; as you has very similar questions; Thanks, Shawn

  • Hey Shawn,

Love your videos and teaching style. You are providing a great service here to the world. My question is, I have always been told that the downswing is driven by the shoulders and then the middle body ... your swing appears to be "all arms" which is a big no-no with a lot of coaches. Am I reading you wrong? Thanks.

  • @kuchakhtar

Yes you are; this swing is based on this: The arms and club track gravity and centrifugal force while the body listens and makes sure it is not in the way; I have many new videos and a whole new 5 disc dvd series to expand on this: see "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn", "golf pro lesson tilted twirl", "golf pro lesson how to get more power and club speed" and "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update" for starters; Shawn

  • Sorry Shawn I generally like your lessons but I thought this video was all over the place. For starters, I'm not sure what swaying really has to do with dropping the arms inside. Seems like another fault for another lesson. I also don't see dropping the arms as a fault that puts you over the top. While it could, it would seem much more likely to create the opposite problem- getting you stuck inside, resulting in a push or hook. No? Genrally love ya Shawn, but this video is confusing.

  • Hi Shawn. i love your wrist hinge action in the backswing and release through the ball. i am trying to emulate but in the takeaway my right wrist hinges back on itself (bowing the left wrist) and i cant get to a nice cupped position at the top of the swing and am very flat/laid off. im finding it difficult to ungroove that move - do you have any tips? Thanks!

  • just wanted to point out that it's not really your central nervous system "telling" your lower body to clear (6:30) but the simple fact that your body parts are connected... like the song

  • shawn,im having a tough time when i bring my arms down,i seem to haye a problem with arms falling in front of me.i took movie of myself and i cast a little just before i make contact.also when you talk about skiping a stone should i have motion or feeling in my right hand ,or am i just over thinking?im right handed. thanks

  • How do you keep your head back when the arms are falling down the plane and the hips are clearing? This is my problem, I can't keep my shoulders back while doing this. I've seen your other videos about the role of your head, but I can't do it. :(

  • Shawn, I have been watching your videos for a couple of years and try to apply everything that you talk about. I now have a golf swing but prior to this I was just leaving the swing to chance and hope it went ok on the day. One question I have is on the back swing, as you toss the arms into the backswing with hips turning, do you also attempt to turn your shoulders or just let nature take its course? Thanks for all your video, they have given me a golf swing.

  • Mr. Clement, I think I've been focusing too much on my arms staying connected to my shoulders in that I feel like at the start of my downswing my arms and shoulders move together. This has caused problems I believe. Now, if I feel like my arms and hands return the shaft of my club parallel or above my toe line (horizontal to ground) that I don't have to focus on the shoulder turn because my shoulders just go along for the ride. Am I feeling this correctly?

  • shawn Any tips on how to maintain spine angle in golf swing, i tend to lose spine angle at impact hence probably why i slap my irons, everytime i try and stay over the ball i slice badly

  • Hi Shawn, Can you help me, i've been working on lag in my swing as i tend to hit my irons high with little penetration, i tend to slap my irons instead of compressing the ball, i've been working on holding the wrist hinge on way down, but everytime i do this i tend to shank the ball, any tips thanks

    Steve

  • Shawn- great instruction. Can you help me with my swing, i've been working on lag in the swing as i tend to hit my irons high and lack distance- a little slappy with them instead of compressing the ball, the problem is when i try and hold the lag i end up shanking the ball even with long irons, i would be grateful for your advice

    Steve

  • Clement is a hell of a teacher.

  • Hi, Shawn Once I get to the top of my back-swing, I get this feeling of pulling my elbows/arms instead of pushing/throwing, like i used to get(when I started) its the only way i can "feel" that my elbows are leading. Is this along the lines of what I am trying to feel on the downswing or Has something gone horribly wrong?

  • hi shawn watched all your vids very helpfull trying to erase my old swing and start again just struggling on letting the arms fall as ive been shanking or slice ing i keep checking my grip i think its ok any tips .thanks

  • Hey Shawn,

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate it.

  • hey shawn,

Also wanted to comment about the release. The feel i have is that the release happens automatically if the grip is sound. I have the sensation of maintaining the lag as long as possible unitl gravity takes over and makes it impossible to hold it any longer. I find that it happens easier if the left arm is pronated (taut). It was a rather enlightening moment...I hope it is correct!

Does this sound like the feel that i should be looking for?

  • @gdevons ; Very good!! See the response I just gave mjburke43 for confirmation!

    Shawn

  • Shawn, around the 2:45 mark, your hands are in front of you and the back of your left hand is facing away from you. You have alot of lag. Can you comment on the need to have your hands in this position on the down swing? How long into the down swing should your left hand be facing away from you. When and how exactly do you release the club? Do you have any drills to practice the releae? Thanks so much Shawn.

  • @mjburke43 If you are properly braced against the left ankle and you are whipping to the target, you will feel the right arm (right handed player) extend to the target THROUGH THE BALL: see "golf pro lesson fishing and golf" and also master the one leg drill from the "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" video which will get you the THROUGH FEEL you are looking for; lag will take care of itself through the proper focus! Shawn

  • Thanks Shawn. I've seen so many of your videos since watching this one and I think they are all very well done. One final question. Do you have any drills for maintaining wrist cock deep in the swing so that one can get a "late hit" (especially with the driver)? Intellectually, I completely understand what you are saying about allowing the arms to fall in front, and I see that you maintain your wrist cock, but I am having trouble with this. Any advice re: drills would be appreciated.

  • @mjburke43,

Have a look at "Golf pro Lesson How to Clear the Hips" and Golf pro lesson Insanity of Golf". Those will give you a few more ideas with maintaining lag instinctively.

  • Thank you Shawn. I truly appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. You're a true professional.

  • Hi Shawn,

I watched the 5 videos you recommended, but didn't see anything specific to how the arms should fall when you use your driver. From what I saw, it seems like your arms still fall when you use your driver but that your arms are just a bit further away from your body. Is this correct?

  • Yes; definitely!

    Well said; Shawn

  • Great video Shawn. Question though... do the arms fall the same way when you are hitting your driver? Is there any variation between arms falling with your irons vs. your driver? Might you be able to do a quick video address this issue. Thanks so much

  • Got that already...:) Golf Pro lesson taut swing philosophy"; "Golf pro lesson set up for all clubs"; "golf pro lesson swing plane" and "golf pro lesson modern driver part 1 and 2"

    Shawn

  • Thanks Shawn. I'll check them out. Much appreciated.

  • 6.12 watch over and over and copy that swing. Easy, simple and very effective swing, helped me so much just trying to copy that, particularly the left foot roll and plant/trigger, brace to the left, stay to the left, not the sway weight shift i thought it was, so so helpful and well explained.

  • Thanks! :)

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw m8, thanks dude youve really made the last elements of golf click for me, that being, the brace to the left and stay there and the elbow/wrist infront of the ball before release, now if i do all that and i have aligned properly, i just hit them straight, without all the effort of trying to straighten the clubhead through impact. now i just swing and it happens ive gotten better power and direction {more often than not} just through that, superior golf tip videos Shawn, well done man.

  • Trying to drill the right elbow in front of my chest. Can it go too far forward? As one who struggled with lag, am thinking not but curious if SC has thoughts... thx.

  • @GuinsInSeven,

Gravity and centrifugal force will direct the arm swing on the right track naturally as long as the body is getting out of the way on time. It is possible that the right elbow could get too far forward but that would be as a result of manipulation and trying to force the arms in front. Hope that helps!

  • Why is golf this difficult? It shouldn't be this difficult.

  • If it was too easy, nobody would be playing! :)

    Shawn

  • This also solve, along with a better grip, my problem with the sweeping clubs being on with my irons being off (or visa versa) Today everything was solid!!

  • I have been working on this as a drill for a week and I had the most effortless ball smashing I have every experienced in my life.

Best line of the day on hole one. I apologized to the other guys that I left my driver in the other car. One offered his driver. I told him I was ok with my hybrid on a 358 yard par 4. After my tee shot they said "I guess you really do not need your driver do you."

This also made my "3/4" feel shots (hitting an 8 iron from 110 pin high) that much more crisp

  • Shawn, I can't thank you enough. Seriously, this is the best lesson I have ever seen. Awesome !

  • This is truly the best lesson ever. Thanks Mr. Clement!!!!

  • I truly believe that this is the greatest golf lesson ever. I have been studying and playing 5 days a week for a year after a lifetime of playing to 18. I feel awkward saying this looking at some of comments here. This IS the greatest video lesson ever. II went back and looked at the Ben Hogan Slo mo vid and saw it with new eyes. He just drops and straightens the left arm, everything else just falls into place. Cheers to the best swing mentor on the planet!

  • Thanks for the great comment!

    Happy New Year to you!

    Shawn

  • I don't get lessons from my golf pro, at the course I work at, i just try to watch the swing hear the lessons the give to other members, but after watchin most of you videos i really see how the swing is developed. soo i took a golf club went outside to swing it. i try to act like i didnt have a golf club in my hands and that i was just "skipping a stone accross the water" and let my body be loose and flow, i didn't hit a ball. but the swing it self felt alot smoother. i didnt need so much speed

  • Thanks for the great comment!

    You are on the right track on your approach to the swing; in my dvd series, I show how to hit a ball by twirling a ball on a rubber string; the better the swing, and the more you are aware that the swing is designed to hit through the ball, the better you will be at this game;

    Shawn

  • I have been reading Fred Shoemaker's Exceptional Golf for several years trying to figure out what he is talking about. Some of his stuff is too cerebral for me. But, I think I finally understand his concept of being "aware" of what's going on in the swing. Recently, I became aware of my arms finishing a little too tight against my chest. So, I started turning just my shoulders and the arms seemed to fall into place nicely without thinking about it. Nice high launch and straight shots.

  • This is the way to learn!!! Way to go Man!

    Shawn

  • Great video! A real gem! I've stuggled with coming over the top in the past and only recently realized "forget the hips (bump and all that) - just let the arms fall to start the downswing and it will all happen for you". Shawn: as an aside I've just realized the stone skipping analogy (a la Ben Hogan) - UNINTENTIONALLY promotes an over the top move, because u need that right shoulder rotating to side throw! - it's one of the oldest analogies out there but I think this is one of its drawbacks!

  • Hey Massivo!

    Great realization on the first part but I am uploading a video called "Golf's Insanity" that will help you in the second section;

    Shawn

  • Hi Shaun,

Thank you so much for this! I have a timing swing that has me either lights out of hitting three off the tee. I use my left knee as a trigger - hate it; not consistent. I hear you saying that letting the arms drop will eliminate my need to time it so much. Does this apply for the driver swing too? Thanks again,

    Dave

  • As long as the command is to let the arms fall through the ball and towards the target! See "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"; take the time to allow for the swing's complete momentum cycle! Good comment, Thanks!

    Shawn

  • hi,clemshaw, i got problem of swing plane , jim furyk is upright and then back in to the plane, but my problem is just opposite , on plane for my backswing but when get into impact my swing plane will out of line, and i know im using hand power, but i cant just like let the arm fall, can i have any other drill or suggestion to help me , because it just happen in just in milisecond i just can feel it that way......thankyou

  • Shaun,

I have been pull hooking the ball recently. Obviously I feel this is because my shoulders are turning too early in the swing. Any suggestions on how to stop?

  • Check your grip-club face relationship first; then check your braced tilt. Then once the set up is good, then it is super important that your focus be through the ball and to a very specific target; see the following videos:

"Golf pro lesson grip 2 wrist hinge"

"Golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2"

Golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 and finally" Golf pro lesson Through ball", "Golf pro lesson target focus" and "Golf pro lesson how to repeat your practice swing" Enjoy! Shawn

  • im only 14 but i tink dis vid s gr8

  • This is the best video help I have ever seen! I hate technical tips which make you stilted but this just makes such sense and is really easy to follow. And it works!

  • Thanks Bud!

    Glad you are enjoying; you will love the DVD which will give you the same delivery of info but in a priority sequence with drills and on course execution of all shots from driver to putter;

    Shawn

  • Your head drops as you drop your arms. I've always been told to keep your head in the same position. Then again, I top the ball a lot so perhaps I misunderstood.

  • Have a look at my "golf pro lesson head bobbing" for the real story on this (I never top the ball...:)); also have a look at my "golf pro lesson don't keep the head down" part 1 and 2 as well as the "golf pro lesson head steady" part 2;

    thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • sorry i meant the buttend of the club at 3:47

  • Thanks blck90vette!

  • people,,look where the toe of shawns club is pointing at (3:47),,right down the target line,,When at the range next time, try stopping where he is from your backswing ( 2 or 3 x),,and remember that feeling,,,then pull the trigger,,,,this has helped me trmendously,,,i would always come across the ball with toe of the club pointing well left of the target, all along thinking i was going straight down the line,,needless to say, atrocious shots,,,,,thanks shawn,,,,this has helped be 150 %...

  • Hey Shawn, I am working hard on this but can't seem to get the feeling of dropping the elbow in the slot. Any tips? I have been waiting to correct this before sending my video. Your videos have been very helpful!!!!!!!!!!

  • Have a look at "golf pro lesson elbow close" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" which will help you a lot!

    Shawn

  • hi shawn the problems that the people will have, are that they will pull down the club and bring them on an out to in plane, if you try to get the club in front. thats my thinking. i agree with everthing else you teaching, youre a great teacher, thank you.

  • I know why you are saying this; but if you complete the backswing, this will not be an issue! See "golf pro lesson tempo and timing update" and it should help you understand better;

    Shawn

  • Great analogy on the pushing momentum on the kid in the swing

  • Outstanding tip. Probably the most useful lesson I have ever had. My game has improved for the better and I believe unlike most lessons from other instructors, this one will stick. Thank you Shawn.

  • Hi Shawn or anyone else who can help me. . For some reason with my irons i get way way to much of a divot but not enough ball at all, also i cant get any high shots with my iron. . . THANKS.

  • Hey Shawn, this video is what I've been trying to google an answer to. I'm so conscious of just firing the hips and my hands will get stuck behind my body. But if I focus on just arms falling in front of me without the hips driving but with them clearing I get picture perfect positions and contact via video.

Is this the "real" role of the hips? To just clear out of the way of the arms vs driving your hips to pull the arms through instead?

  • Shawn, Love your videos... very clear instruction.. please take a quick look at my 2 swing videos.. I a 5-6 handicapper who has hit a bit of plateau and feel like i'm missing some distance even tho swing speed is 106-113.. any advise? thanks!

  • Wow great tip. I always thought I had to drop my hands into the "slot" then swing through. Plus, I am always thinking of "turning my hips through". Never knew it should be instinctive. No wonder I hit fat and inconsistent. Thanks, I can't wait to get out to the range and try it!

  • Shawn, HELP!

I have picked up the worst habit and I think you can help. When I clear my hips, my hands/ shoulders/arms are going with them - causing an over the top motion. Am I releasing too late? Even when I practice in slow motion, whenever my hips start to turn, I feel EVERYTHING start to turn with them, causing me to swing across the golf ball. I need to know what to concentrait on the most to fix this more than aggrivating move in my swing. Thanks so much!

  • Hey Smiddy!

Easy; when unwinding through the ball, the axis of rotation stays in place AGAINST THE LEFT SIDE! You feel this way because you let the downswing unwind around your right leg and your head is very volatile in this situation; see "golf Pro Lesson braced Tilt Part 2", "Golf pro lesson Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 and if you are the type that lets the left heel come off the ground in the backswing, see "Golf Pro lesson downswing weightshift" and "2008 golf swing review part 2"; Shawn

  • great info, as always. improved my all around game with your concepts. question i have is, how does one de loft a club and get that extra ydge? i hit a 7 i- 155yds. don't really have a low ball flight. thanks.

  • Hey Andrepark! Have a look at the comment I replied to Shakanaku just below; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn!

I was wondering which video would be most helpful for a backhander that swings rather than hits the ball and which one would explain the connection of the arms and body?

As my left arm is dominant and the right one is lacking motoric skill to 'skip the stone' could u explain the moving of the left arm through the swing?

  • Just lie throwing a frizbee! Combine this with "golf pro lesson compress through the ball" you would be throwing the frizbee to have it skip off the pavement when throwing towards the target"! Shawn

  • Reviewing this for 3rd or 4th time...and always appreciating some other nuance. Question......I assume that earlier clearing of the hips is most appropriate for driver etc.....and particularly that sequencing together the fall off the arms and the left hip (or body in general) is more appropriate for shorter iron shots...example approach shots. Sometimes after hitting a great drive (I owe it all to you) if I ramp up the iron to vigorously I miss the green with lets say a 9 iron....frustrating.

  • Hey Shawn, you have some great lessons, I have a question. Since I have been watching your lessons, I have been making good contact with the ball, and I am no longer directionally challanged. However I do not consistantly take divots, The ball basically goes where i want it,(80%) just no divot. Have any instructions?

Also I have been playing maybe a year and a half now and Btw, I Thought you should know, I went from a 17 handicap to a 9 in about 3 weeks of learning from your lessons.

  • Right on!

I would have a look at your grip; without that trigger finger, you cannot take a healthy divot (golf pro lesson proper grip and Grip 2 wrist hinge"; then see the "golf Pro Lesson compress through the ball" Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, I'm having problems hitting pull shots on a fairly consistent basis. What are the best drills to perform and what videos should I focus on?

  • Hey JW!

This is a target perception issue; I will have a new dvd coming out that will blow you guys away; to get a glimpse of this, see the following videos: "Golf Pro Lesson be a solid ball striker" and "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and especially 3!

    Shawn

  • I've reviewed these videos but my pulls always end up coming back eventually. Could you do a video on the "over the top" golf swing? It's such a common problem.

  • exactly!!

  • i'm a 2 handicapper from the uk and sometimes i have a slight block , i watch this video and my block disappears. many thanks shawn, your certainly have a talent for explaining the golf swing.

  • Shawn,You da man! I got the plant and fall move down but in order to lag the club with passive(whip like )arms I find it easier after the toss to the top to pull my left shoulder up and away from my chin on my downswing I find i can adjust the power by my left shoulder pull and my hips move with the shoulder. When I do this shoulder pull I find i don't think about starting the downswing with my arms ,I can lag the club better and whip it down the line. Do you see any problems with this move ?

  • Not at all! It is great that you were able to lead yourself to that feel! Keep it up dude! Shawn

  • @buzz92028

Wow. That tip on left shoulder pull has helped a LOT. Thank you.

Question - do you focus on where do you pull the left shoulder to? Meaning do you try to feel it move towards the target or to your left side?

  • Try to stay with the feel of the release against the left side towards a target; this will allow the shoulder to find it's own place; see "golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2" and "golf pro lesson" don't keep your head down" part 1 and 2 as well;

    Shawn

  • dear mr clemshaw

I have view couple of your instruction. I have to say that these are the best instructions. I learned so much and already solved most of my problems even before I swing a club! I have been playing golf for 7 years and took lessons from 3 different pro but none of them could explain like you. thanks very much.

  • Thanks very much you guys! Enjoy the start of the season! Shawn

  • Hi, Shawn, your videos are great, very helpful, easy to follow, this arms falling down video is the best, it has totally changed my game, keep up the good work,

  • I'll keep it short , you good!

  • I LOVE playing golf, Im a weekend addict !!! But its driving me crazy that a golf swing can look so simple but yet so complex!!

  • Hey Shawn love your videos. I just started using your technique the end of the last golf season. been playing for 4 years never took a lesson. I can hit 'em str8 and stay in the fairway, get to the green in three and 2 putt. this have been my game for a long time now. Im having problems understanding how to let the arms fall and release the club towards the target. for some reason it seen the weight of the club head force me to release it at about my right hip. any drills for this

  • if you hit the ball straight as you say, you have no problem.

    just work on your scoring.

  • There is a problem... distant !!! Cant putt for birdies on par 4s and 5s without it. my buddie tell me im releasing the club to early and power is lost before i hit the ball. they say the same thing shawn said LET THE ARMS FALL, don't release till a certain point, or hold the L into the down swing. and I just cant do it right. my buddies shooting 80's and Im in the high 90's. Im sick of being in last place with these guys. I need my game to go to the next level.

  • no you can't think about that stuff while you're playing. trust me, it will ruin your round. if you really want more distance then go to the range and work on it, but during your rounds with your buddies you're just going to have to get the ball in the hole.

  • Yes of course! See my " Golf Pro Lesson Through the ball" and "golf pro lesson compress through the ball" videos; many analogies and drills to help you here; combine these with the "golf Pro Lesson One leg swing no weightshift" video and you will get more power than you ever thought; Shawn

If you still have some leaks after that, then you will want to get my dvd series that will make sure you get all the necessary components one by one in priority sequence...

  • Another 2:40 worth of info, with the rest a lot of unneccessary chatting. C'mon Shawn, more content, less comment please.

  • Didn't realize you were paying for these videos by the minute rdougw ... I hope Shawn ignores your advice because I can listen to him all day long!

  • exactly...thankyou.

all of us are indebted to shawn,

    well said!!

    thumbs up.

    :o)

  • good one shawn i think another important part of the drill is keeping your head behind the ball throught the fall ( although i am not a top 25 pga pro )

    haha : )

  • Hi Shawn

I believe this to be the single best golf lesson I have ever seen and believe me I have seen a few. I found it very interesting how you point out that our bodies are smart enough to instinctively get out of the way to allow room for our arms to swing through. For a long time I have listened to what they say on TV and in magazines about starting from the ground up which I could never get right. Now I understand don't think about it because I certainly don't when skimming stones. Thanks

  • Hi Shawn.

Would you say it's a good idea to practice slow "falling" and then build speed little by little?

    Tommy.

  • Shawn, thank you very much for taking the time to post these excellent videos. My main problem was after i completed my backswing, i would swing my arms, and the whole club from the top through the finish. After watching your videos, i saw that your supposed to plant, and let your arms fall, and pull the handle of the club through, letting gravity bring the club on plane. Wow, what an amazing difference.

If i hadn't stumbled onto your videos, i would still be swinging in ignorance. Thank you!

  • You are welcome!

Make sure you see the "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and Tempo update" and the "Golf Pro Lesson bilateral golf swing" videos which are a complement to what you are working on...

    Shawn

  • some good stuff, but a lot of rubbish.

  • Sorry young lad; I have taught this game full time longer than you have been alive on this planet...:)

When you will have done the same, I will be another 22 years ahead of you...:)

Good luck in your game; Shawn
