Standardization was a VERY stupid concept. You can't build a weapons system that can fit all of the military branches needs. McNamara was a fucking idiot. Because of him, the ABM systems based on the Nike system, were also canceled.
What's worse is that now, they are applying the same standardization concept with the F-35. The way I see it, the US military is fucked.
@StiviGun1 im from australia, we only just retired the F111's at the end of last year. Im gutted. And im not looking forward to the F35 either. Seems like a jack of all master of fuck all plane to me. Stealth that isnt stealthy enough to be stealth, too fat with small wings to be a fighter, to fragile and fast to be a ground support and too expensive to maintain to give pilots air time they need. Sounds bloody stupid. We didnt get great planes in the 80s with compromise.
@slickstrings The F-35 is a failure, I agree with you. But the problem is that there many other international participants that have contributed with money to the F-35's development. So if the Americans cancel this program, they would have nothing to offer their allies in return. That's why they're keeping this failure going. What else can they offer to Australia, for instance, if they cancel the F-35? There's nothing out there to replace the F-35.
@StiviGun1 And how the fuck would you know. You;ve already shown on other videos you don't even have a basic knowledge of engineering of basic physics. SO your opinion is worth less than the shit outside on the lawn. IDIOT.
@slickstrings First of the F-18 was a crappy choice for Australia in the !980's it is a carrier plane with minimal payload and a short range. Australia hasn't had a carrier for 40 years, so these planes were the wrong choice.
No one knows how the F-35 will perform. As for the F-111 I remember seeing them at a few airshows out at Richmond and Avalon, cool planes but old as shit and incredibly expensive to maintain.
I like it when they sank the Pong Su though off Sydney.
@Jospehporta I know the F111 was way past its use by date, but it doesnt make them any less impressive or just plain amazing. But i reccon the F18 was a good choice. A friend of mine works on them and the pilots love them. They are a navy plane but they actually carry an impressive payload for their size. Range is an issue though. Their main advantage is their true multirole capability. We only have a small airforce afterall. I reccon more superhornets instead of the F35.
@slickstrings Lets face it F18's even the super hornets are using 1970's design technology and are not stealthy in the slightest. The F35 one it enters full scale production will be far superior to the F18. The avionics alone makes them far superior.

I used to watch "Wings" on the Discovery Channel as a child with my father. I wish this program was still on the air.
