  • ralph stanley <3

  • u go will

  • Revolutionary. His music helped me through some really difficult times. Thanks.

  • I'm trying to learn guitar. I'm hoping to come up with an arrangement for Porchlight as soon as I've got a little skill.

  • great interview! Im glad someone did an interview with him... he is absolutely phenominal!!!

  • He's right. Playing banjo is pretty easy. Especially if you play guitar for a decade before buying a banjo.

  • Playing the banjo the way he plays the banjo is easy. All he is doing is chunking through chords like a rhythm guitar. That's not true banjo playing. In his hands the banjo is little more than a mike stand.

His real skill and gifts are his voice and songwriting abilities. Those are his true talents and what defines him as a musical artist.

Good interview Ron. Enjoyed hearing it.

  • he's playing a tenor style 4 string. a banjo made for "chunking through chords" doesnt make him anyless of a banjoist and it is "true banjo playing"

  • Look up * Sean Moyses plays "Some of these days" * on youtube it won't let me post the link.

There you will see real tenor banjo playing with the skill that tenor banjo playing involves.

There is much more to tenor banjo playing than what Mr. Whitmore was doing. He was just "chunking through chords and could have just as easily been using a guitar as a banjo. There's hardly any proficiency involved to the way he was playing the instrument.

  • As an additional reference point for "Tenor banjo" also do a youtube search using the words "gerry oconnor tenor banjo".

The first video at the top of the search is another fine example of tenor banjo but also very different musical style from Sean Moyses.

  • Will is a buddy of mine, and is one hell of a guy. Buy his stuff and see him live so he can finish building his house. Jason from Dubuque, IA loves ya man!

  • Wish he'd come to Germany...really like his stuff.

But what gave me a fright: on one photo, with his hat on, he looked like Roger Cicero with tattoos to boot... *shiver*

  • I say him open for Clutch in Morgantown.

It struck me as odd that they had this solo dude with an acoustic, but after one song, I understood.

    Good interview too.

    Solid, non-annoying questions.

  • Kinda like "Wayne's World."

  • nice living room

  • Whitmore is one of my banjo gods!!!
