  • I fully agree. Not sure if it was available though - it may have been on the KX - Doncaster with 86101,,,,,

  • Excellent, has the same speed as the new Pendolino

beautiful engine, I have a model of the same scale and I think 00 Hornby train set in the video, I have almost all coaches

    greeting

    gus

  • @argenvia GUSTAVO!!! Hello my friend!! I am glad you like this!

  • God, I have so many happy memories on these beasts. Never did quite get an afull lenght WCML. The one time I tried to, on the 1st southbound from Glasgow, it got diverted via Northampton. Great Video.

  • Thanks

  • You're welcome?

  • nice video, where was this going??

  • Thanks for the comment - Birmingham International to Glasgow Central.

  • Take one of the buffet cars away the sleeper and the 47 and put a Mk1 bagage van on the rear and you would of had an original 1980s wcml Express.

  • looking at that video it would take you back to the early 80s and the late 70s

  • ONE OF THE BEST LOCOS TO RUN ON BR !!! BLOODY SHAME THEY ARE NOT STILL BEING USED ! or have some been saved ?

  • 87035 resides at the Birmingham Railway Museum at Tyseley, but I'm not sure what the plans are. The bulk of the remainder are Bulgarian now...

I agree with you It's a real shame that they have been cast aside for those pieces of crap Branson runs on the WCML.

  • Hi Guys.

Just a bit of info for you, 87035 is at Crewe Heritage Centre undergoing an overhaul - and that was last time I saw it which was the back end of February. Either an overhaul to make it a 'static' or maybe to running order? If ever goes mainline again, I will be one of the first people to book on it's debut tour as 87035 is my beast of the class!

    Regards,

    Rob.

  • It is at Crewe, Rob, its getting restoration work doing to it and mid next year ish its booked for a full wack mainline trail ;)

  • maybe THE best just in a league of there own sheer power and ruggedness which is sadly missed now the west coast is infested with the plastic shite without doubt the worst ever to grace the line....the west coast mainline left with the memories of the 87s the best ac of its generation

  • That was fantastic. Was that Diesel at the end working or just been towed along

  • It was 'dead in tow' Stefan - It was needed however, on the return trip, as 87002 failed.

  • shame the ronnie known as 601 was on the rear.

  • You are not wrong - As I was driving to Acton Bridge (at 05.30!), I was wondering whether DVT 82115 would be utilised. I hoped not, as Glasgow, surely has facilities to run a loco round a train. Imagine my horror when THAT appeared on the rear of the train...

ps - accept my friend invite - you won't have to wait for comment approval!

  • Ok thank you.

  • Not half

  • She flies!!!!!

Better than that POS disappearing in the opposite direction!!!

  • I was crapping myself - I knew a southbound was due, and I thought I might get bowled!

  • Great!

was the type 47 on the back for support purposes?

  • Cheers! The loco was in fact 57601, an ex-class 47 (47825), and it was there for insurance, as this was 87002's first passenger outing for some time.

  • And that insurance was to come in handy for the return journey, thanks to 87002's problems.

  • Indeed. Ronnie to the rescue...again!

  • Very nice! Like going back in time - apart from that lump on the back!

  • I should add, that with new information from E3191, the moaning old bastard, that the loco's battery charger failed. Oooops - bad Prenton. (slaps wrist!)

  • Why do they need a diesel on the back. Is it needed to power the brakes or is it simply a lack of confidence in preserved locomotives.

  • Insurance, mainly. And seeing as 87002's batteries were buggered up, half-way through the tour at Polmadie Depot, it seems that it was a good policy. A crappy policy for the purists, like myself, but the spoon got the punters home.

  • Well at least I got 87 froth this week anyways. I was heading for the return last night, before I heard it was retimed, and then furthermore delayed, and then hearing that 57601 was dragging her due to failing! I didnt go, I couldn't, it was against my principles! But, on Monday as you probably already know, I got her on her first mail train, so at least I got some froth! Thanks for posting, brings back some memories of my frequent family trips to Liverpool...

  • I've already said it before, but I was all weepy-ish. I have loved the 87's since I was about 3, when me dad used to take me to Lime Street to see the class 115 DMU's in refurbished White/Blue stripe livery. They were just the bollocks, right until the end, along with the 86's. A bit of me died when Virgin got rid, but at least Freightliner have a few 'cans' still knocking about, eh?

  • Oh yeah, on weekday Wigan evenings on some of my treks I come across the Coatbridge-Crewe working with 86s through Wigan exactly 6 o clock but sometimes they are taken over by 90s or recently an 86 and 90 together!?!

  • Yeah - I noticed, except the bloody 350's sometimes get in the way!

  • Not half

  • Excellent vid mate! As for LS, I know I wouldnt want the hassle but you should of said 'call the BTP, see if I care'. When the BTP start getting peed off getting called out to pointless trivial matters like just letting someone who is a railwayman instead of a troublemaker onto the platform then they may do something about the staff. Loughborough was the same last time I was there.

  • u got me front window hanging hellfire cracking video m8 87006.

  • Thanks mate - I hope you had a top day!

  • great video mate...it looks great

  • Cheers! She's a BEAST!

  • lol it went to at 05.00 and left at 06.30

  • AWSOME u lucky git

5 stars and im adding it as a fav nice one!

  • Now that's what i call a proper train. They should all be that long, plenty of seats to go round then :-) 87 looks cracking.5***** Cheers

  • it was heading birmingham

  • Ohhh... if it was before 7, then it was probably the empty stock - my apologies.

  • :o that passed though rugby tdoay

  • How? It was a Birmingham International - Glasgow train...

  • Hey - a GM's a GM! ...but I know what you mean!

  • Nice! 5 stars.

  • Crikey.

  • Indeed.

  • Love the 'can' - thanks mate!

  • No, thanks for watching. I must admit - I'm partial to the odd Pringle now and then, though....

  • Thanks O-Freightliner man of mystery - Beautiful, ain't she? I think the mkIII sleeper has piles though, only there's something purple hanging out the back!!

  • Excellent shot Jez, and good to see it working again..well done..5*..Bob

  • Cheers Bob!

  • fucking awsome to see that 5* favs. shame about half mk2s/3s!

  • Language....!

  • A rare locomotive I take it? Forgive me for not knowing the significance, just another ignorant Americian. ;-)

  • You're not ignorant, Matt. The Class 87's were retired from Expresses a few years back. They are 5,000hp ac locomotives with a top speed of 110mph. Much loved by railfans over here. Sadly most have been sold to Bulgaria, and this is the only main-line runner left.

  • Oh, I just like to make fun of myself. Neat though, a big powerful locomotive like that is definitely cool. Hope at least one gets preserved somewhere.

  • Besides 87002, three more 87's are now preserved in the UK; 87001 at the National Railway Museum in York, 87031 at Tyseley in Birmingham, and 87035 at The Railway Age in Crewe.

  • Cheers, David - I'm well pleased to see that 87035 is still extant. I remember being gutted on many an occasion at Lime Street when 'boring, blue Robert Burns' trundled in...! I'd kill to see the same loco at LS today! She was always pristine - I may be wrong, but I think she was the last (apart from 87101) of the class in BR blue, before Intercity/Swallow took over.

  • You're welcome PrentonPimp. I don't think I ever saw 87101 though... 87035 is currently undergoing a repaint into, yes you've guessed it, BR Blue. If the owners of number 31 are viewing this, we hope it'll go into Intercity Swallow, or even Virgin Red! LOL!

  • On a final note and if memory serves, the last time I saw an 87 near the Liverpool area was in March 2005 when Runcorn was closed at weekends for engineering, and diversions (with the now frequent use of the 57/3's) were taking place. The diagram I recall then was 87004 Brittania being dragged through Rainhill; it was one of the last Virgin diagrams with 87's on, before the pendolinos displaced them completely. I'd give anything to see 87002 on the blocks at Liverpool Lime Street anytime soon...

  • Oh, you have got NO idea how much I want to see that! Problem is, last time I tried to gain access to LS, I was stopped from entering through the local/Trans-pennine barriers, and then ejected by Network Rail staff, because "I was not a known enthusiast, and I could be a terrorist." Furthermoer, "If I did not vacate the station immediately, or produce a valid ticket, BTP would be called."

That was in 2007 - my first visit since 1989 - I have not returned.

    Numpties, the lot of 'em.

  • Oh dear. Sorry to learn of your unpleasant experiences at Lime Street, and I'm inclined to agree with you in the fact that the NR Staff based there can be rather jumpy over the photography issue. A little tip if you try to go next time (or any other NR owned station for that matter), show them a copy of the NR Enthusiasts Guidelines; I'll send you the link via a private message.

  • Was that for a tour? With tours only they let you down to the bottom, I did with the Deltic in February.

  • Nah mate. I wanted to video last year's Pendo drags. Where have you been, anyway?

  • What do you mean, lately or back then?

  • Last few days!

  • Or Intercity Executive even.

  • @theamateurbasher number 31 87031? 87031s been scrapped RIP

  • I can't believe that most have been sold to Bulgaria!!! That's a crime. One would have thought, knowing how we UK rail fans love our trains, they would be offered up for preservation. Yes I know that the majority (if not all) of the privately run railways aren't electrified but I'm sure a place could have been found for them somewhere. Still, at least the beasts are roaming free even if it is Bulgaria....

  • Excellent stuff PrentonPimp, a triumphant return of an 87 to West Coast metals! I for one, would like to wish her the best of luck in her already successful new career. 5*

  • Cheers theamateurbasher! This one was a MUST! What a sight - just a shame about 57601 on the rear..

  • That flippin' pest (57601) again! A DVT would've been more appropriate; in fact, I'd like to know what happened to 82115 since it's stint with 86101 on the London KX to Doncaster workings...

    Cheers again!

  • Its currently stored at Wolverton works

  • Shame... Much better than a bodysnatcher..
