mines just done this. Can at least one person answer the several people that have asked what is this noise and whats causing it?
My HDD got replaced by Apple under apple care about a month ago as it made this noise then just froze on a blue screen when I tried to start it up after it crashed. Apple said it was the HDD. Now, it's doing the noise again once in a while. NOooooooo!
i'm still a bit scared since my 1st gen macbook air started this about 2 months ago... so not sure, why it didn't do it for the first 8 months, but does now? hum...
my laptop is not a mac but i have just switched hard drives from a hitachi to a toshiba and it makes the same or similar sound very frequently, very strange.

Apple purchases their hardware from other companies. There isn't really anything that makes it special other than the Apple branding.
The same thing would happen to, well, any other laptop user.

I have known that Apple uses Samsung's 1.8 inch HDD for Macbook Air.

I thought MacBook Air's were too thin to contain hard drives?

The Air uses the same 80GB 1.8 inch hard drive that is in the 80GB iPod Classic.

The sound comes from the speaker. Maybe the the hard drive makes some sort of resonance and the speaker replicates it.
