It's not the band's fault he died and they wanted to carry on. Curtis had a deathwish: he was fixated with the idea of dying before the age of 25. His wife said they had marriage problems because of this, not the other way around. His affair and so forth was almost a means to an end. I think Joy Division would have followed the same musical path as NO. The band was constantly evolving. They would never had made two albums in the same style. I guess we'll never know and therein lies the mystery.

I think the reason most people fixate on Curtis is because he was really the zeitgeist behind Joy Division. When he died and left the others (Sumner, Crane and... uh, other guy! I forgot!) holding the bag, so to speak, they went off in a much different direction as New Order. Still, the musicianship, in my mind, sets the tone as much as Curtis's voice does, even if there's a big disparity between their recorded sound and their live one.
