now im eyeballing the vase in the corner of my house...looking over...-walks over takes flowers out-oh SHIT yeah! this thing plays and makes awesome noises!! but its so heavy :/ ... and yes. I really did that. im sitting here playing a vase.
This is real awesome talent but in my neighborhood by at least 1:39 this is what this guy would be hearing................ *BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG* YO!!! SHUT DA FUK UP!!! Lol
No pun intended on an obvious stereotype either :-p
@423Longboarders, yep and to make of these things takes detail orentation and skill. Try getting a ball of clay.. try making an instrument, like a flute, learned that 3rd grade... man was that a trial and error until.... i got it to whistle!
question, its unseen in the video, but does your Udu have a hole in the side?? I am just trying my hand at making some and in the future might try to make one of that size... would be very ambitious for sure!
Yes, there is a hole on the left side generating all the bass tones -- typical Udu design but played with some S. Indian chops. Good luck on the drum making.
@realblackxxxx ur stupid. just cuz your black (if you are) doesnt mean you can go and say this guy sucks cuz he's white. if you dont get what he's playing then take some music lessons or something
what makes this instrument different from any jar out there? i don't mean to sound offensive, i'm curious about the details/culture of this instrument.
I agree with you 100%. I'm looking forward to getting a bigger udu like the one in this video.
I have a small one that you can see in my video under this one, but I'm new to hand drumming. I did post a response video showing my simple groove. Now, I need to get my fingers flying like this guy!
Indeed, I am applying pure tabla technique to the Udu -- tira kita taka. Just jazzing it up, having fun, keeping it flowing -- 4/4 to 12/8 and back again. Simple tihai. Thanks for the comments.
looks like he's doing a "ti re ki te ta ka" sort of thing i know from playing tabla. right hand ring/middle finger together, then pointer finger, then left hand (twice). thats how i'd go about playing something like this, might not be what he's doing, he's going so fast you cant really see exactly whats going on. very clean and rhythmic playing!

nah im telling the truth love, im from igbo land n im tellin him str8 but for a white person he has dun well becos nowadays i c an instrument that is used by women of my people now being dispersed commercialy by white people hoo dont botha to acknowledge the instruments roots............
There is no question we owe a great debt to our sisters and brothers in Nigeria who are the source of these amazing ceramic instruments that are now made and enjoyed by people all over the world. Peace.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this is an igbo instrument and this type should be played with a fan...! try a smaller one...and your rythm is good but needs work but for a white person well done!
Thank you very much for the information. May I have some more please? Side hole on your left? Is this drum a traditional coil built pit fired piece? Can you link me to the person that made the udu? I would like to try to make one myself.
no problem. u can essentially put the side hole on wichever side u feel comfortable with ur dominant hand. In nigeria traditionally they start by molding a slab for the bottom half, and then coiling the rest of the way up, and then they pit fire it.
I see that shiva peeking out from behind the curtain..
